After reading about all the traffic horror stories of getting into the festival I was wondering if it was a bad idea to rent a car and drive in to the festival on Saturday and Sunday (not going Friday). Any thoughts?
It's about the music, yes, but you miss at least 40% of the experience and that is just madness. I would be sitting in a hotel pissed off because I just saw great music, but I know all the crazy sh** I am missing and I am a crazy myself.
2 Steps you have to rectify this situation....
1. Cancel Hotel Reservation 2. Buy a Tent I lied, there is a Step 3.... Party your a** off and have the best time possible!

If you are infering that you arrive at Bonnaroo on Saturday, it's not gonna happen. The festival is going to be completely packed by then and there's no way in/out.
You should really just arrive thursday or friday. Getting in is not as bad as people are gonna tell you. This is gonna be my third year and waiting in line was never a problem. If you spent $200 on that ticket you might as well get there early and camp out with everyone else. It's totally worth it.

You've got to filter these responses through what's best for you. I've read many arguments against getting a hotel but I know that 5-6 hours of solid sleep in a room with AC will keep me fresher than camping (in more ways than one). I'm pretty sure if there was a drum circle 20 feet away, it was already 90 degrees at 9AM and I hadn't slept but a couple of hours.....well, let's just say, it's best for everyone if that doesn't happen. I can get into the friendly vibe, if I'm not sleep depraved. As far as what I'll miss....I won't even notice it for all I'll see and do. That being said, Nashville is pretty far....you may want to stay at the Roo at least one night. There's always quick naps in the cinema tent or you could just Wook it up and sleep where you fall. Hope it works out for you either way.

That's what day parking is for. Day parking will be open the entire time.
Thanks for all the replies and help, but honestly I'd rather not go to sleep at 3 a.m. and then wake up in a 150% humidity tent at 7 a.m. when it's 90 degrees outside. How much more difficult can it be than Coachella? I'm asking from an ignorant position, but at Coachella we stay in a hotel that is a half hour away and drive in/out each day. Is that just not possible at Roo?
There are some days where you cant go in and out. As for tent thing, don't get some hardcore Everest tent. Get a shade tent or something like that. Last year i slept out in the open on a cot. What woke me up was not the heat, but the people in tents waking up all saying how hot was! Its nice and comfortable in the open with shade covering your body.
Definitely possible, I have a friend that lives in Nashville that may try it. There is day parking to show up and leave each day. From a traffic perspective, consider it very doable.
However, living in Nashville, I would find it awfully taxing to drive for an hour at like 4 am after a long day - and I have free accomodations (my house) here that i wouldn't head back for. Bonnaroo is so much of a 24 hour event, aside from just concerts, and i would hate to give up sitting with your neighbor at 9 am, just chatting; wandering around shakedown at 10 am; and meandering around centeroo at noon hitting up random booths. Staying at a hotel, you will not get that. The people who have camped before almost always decide to go it again - it's just learning from experience.
In summary: This will be my third 'roo. I live in Nashville, and I would dread heading back every night. For the money you're paying, it doesn't seem worth it. However, it's all up to you - do what will give you the best Bonnaroo experience.

isn't nashville kinda far away? (over an hour away according to the shuttle info) surely there's a place to stay a bit closer to the festival. are they all full or something?

Well, by Nashville , I hope he means he's staying in Smyrna or Lavergne - they're about 45 mins away but are basically Nashville suburbs. Nashville is an hour, and I guess the shuttle will take it a little slower...
Although there aren't a lot of postings here from the folks staying at hotels, you can be sure there are plenty of people doing it. You will be able to spot them on Saturday/Sunday when they walk by and some random Wooks have this conversation: Wook #1 - "Who's that"? Wook #2 - "It must be the King cause he hasn't got shit all over 'im". Don't forget to bring your coconuts.

HA!! can't believe that a Roo board would censor a Monty Python quote^^^....well, many of you folks know the dialog, I'm sure. In two more days, I'll be free to say anything!
We stayed in a hotel in Tullahoma last year. It was nice having a clean, dry place to get back to. The problem was that it was a little too nice, and we ended up missing a LOT. Because of that, we are going back to camping this year.
It does seem like Nashville is a long way away for staying, but if you've done something like this before, and you know you prefer it this way, do what you prefer.
i live in murfreesboro....its about 35 minutes away from bonnaroo. if you're coming from nashville its going to take you close to an hour and a half depending upon what part of nashville you're staying at.
the drive from nashville to manchester every night is going to be miserable.

Do you mean from manchester to nashville? Either way, I'm not part of the partying until 4 a.m. crew so leaving at midnight on Saturday and then coming back at around 10 on Sunday is very doable on my part. Thanks for everyone who put in their two cents worth. It helped me figure it out a whole lot better. If anyone is looking for a bed and A/C, let me know...ha!
