Spent the evening the other night at a bar for a friend's birthday... when the news broke, a fight broke out in the bar, people were booing, people who were once happy and pumped for the results were now lethargic.
I'm still happy. This is the least painful election I've ever voted in. Usually I've got plenty to complain about.
This year, my biggest disappointment is not having 60 votes in the Senate. It's not so much the ability to have that filibuster-proof majority, though that would be nice... it's more so because with that security, the Dems would be a lot more likely to kick Lieberman's ass to the curb. I suppose that includes the Al Franken loss (or is it?) in Minnesota that's going to a recount. I was very much looking forward to hearing the words "Senator Al Franken" come out of Bill O'Reilly's mouth. It would also be gratifying because that seat was held by the late, great Paul Wellstone. And on the subject of grudge matches going into overtime, there's Georgia. That's going into a run-off because Chambliss didn't get 50%. A win there would be satisfying if only because of the shit they pulled on Max Cleland in 2002.
If what I'm complaining about after the dust settles are things that didn't happen in my own state, I'd say it was a good election. Here in Wisconsin, we won back the lower state Assembly for the first time in over a decade and increased the majority in the state Senate. I've even got my fingers crossed that our Dem governor (whom I consider a tool) has a chance of going to Washington, so we can upgrade to our better Lt. Gov.
I can't wait for those January 20th street parties.
Rumor has it...I say RUMOR has it...Obama might schedule some pre-inauguration events to thank his supporters. I'm taking 01/20/09 off. I want to see this one as it happens.

Yeah, I'll def be going down to DC for the inauguration. Can't miss that, being so close. Wilco was on Colbert the other night and said that they were hoping to play Obama's inauguration. Tweedy said it kinda jokingly, but how awesome would it be to have a free inauguration day concert on the mall?

so I'm going to be going through the city and I'm going to grab a big stack of the Chicago Tribune. If you want a front page PM me and I'll do my best to get a bunch. ;D
EDIT: No Tribunes left this AM. So I grabbed a few Sun-Times.
So...you ARE bringing me a copy of the Sun-Times next week right? The Triubune would have been nice but any Chicago paper would be sweet! MUCH better than the Podunk Times...not even sure they HAD a picture on the front page at all!

Man, I was over at a relative's house for a birthday party today and was expecting some election talk from the mainly McCain supporters that I knew would be there. I wasn't expecting what I got though. Borderline racist jokes and completely false statements on Obama's policies and the like. It wasn't any of my relatives, thank god, but still it was really hard to sit there and listen to. I got up and left the room rather than jumping into the middle of it. Boggles the mind how people can be so blatantly ignorant.

I'm wondering exactly how I'm going to deal with the Republicans in my family, given that there's holidays coming up.
Strangely, I'm least worried about what I'm going to say to my girlfriend's father... but he & I can sit back to drink & "discuss" politics for hours. Nobody's position really seems to change, but there's no hard feelings coming out of it.
Most Republicans in my family at least don't push the issue, or can be civil about it. I've still got a couple past comments that, as far as I'm concerned, merit response given everything that happened Tuesday.
I distinctly remember my grandmother telling me, back in August 2004 (at grandpa's funeral, no less) that I was "wasting (my) money" donating to John Kerry.
Uncle Bill is on my list from a few Christmases ago. All my brother said he liked Al Franken as a comedian, and got an earful about being a Communist. Hopefully that recount is decided one way or another before I see him again.
I saved most of my campaign emails in a folder, just to see how many I'd wind up with through the election. I'm up to 491, and that's excluding everything I got from my Bill Richardson or Russ Feingold lists (and Ségolène Royal, but who's keeping track?). One of these days, I'll have to tally who sent me how many.
This election's still not completely over just yet. We've still got three Senate races in overtime, with a filibuster-proof majority a potentiality.
58 The challenger in Alaska's recount has gained a lead of 3,724 against incumbent/all-but-convicted felon Ted Stevens.
59 The Minnesota recount officially begins today; a post-election recanvassing already shaved incumbent Coleman's lead to 215 votes. This should get quite contentious and, I assume, rather ugly as well. Think Florida 2K, but for a Senate seat.
60 Finally, there's a run-off election in Georgia on Dec 2nd. Incumbent Saxby Chambliss just barely missed the 50% of the vote he needed to win the seat in November. This one's been bringing in a lot of partisan heavy-hitters to campaign. Obama won't touch it but Bill Clinton's been there; the Republicans are in overdrive because preventing 60Ds in the Senate would probably be the biggest victory they can claim this year.

On the lighter side of things, I stumbled upon this...
234 HILARY CLINTON 174 RON PAUL 23 NONE OF THE ABOVE 23 JESUS 21 MIKE HUCKABEE 14 MITT ROMNEY 8 COLIN POWELL 6 GOD 6 LEFT BLANK 5 UNDECIDED 4 AL GORE 4 BISHOP V.M. MCLAUGHLEN 4 FRED THOMPSON 4 OBAMA 4 RUDY GIULLIANI 4 STEVEN COLBERT 3 DONALD DUCK 3 DONALD FOY 3 MICKEY MOUSE 3 T. BOONE PICKENS 2 BILL COSBY 2 BILL McMILLON 2 BILL NYE 2 CHUCK NORRIS 2 CONDOLEEZA RICE 2 FRANK HARDEN 2 FRANKLIN GRAHAM 2 LOU DOBBS 2 PAGO POSSUM 2 SARAH PALIN 2 SEANATOR BROWNBACK 2 GARY BENZENBERG 2 GEORGE W BUSH 2 JOHN EDWARDS 2 LEE GODDARD 2 TIM TEBOW
Among those getting a single vote: Abstain, Against All, Alfred E. Newman, Bill Clinton, Bill O'Riely, Bill Richardson, Bobby Bowden, Bugs Bunny, May the best man win, Me, Morgan Freeman, Mr. Bill, Newt Gingwrich, None (Anarchy), Oprah, Pat Buchannan, Ralph Nader, Hilary Bush, Homer Simpson, Jay Plotkin, Jimmy Carter, Joe the Plumber, John Doe, Lieberman, Theodore Roosevelt, They Both Suck '08, Tiger Woods, Tommy Chong, Truman, Weird Al Yancovic, William Crosby and Willie Nelson
I especially like the 4 people who wrote in "Obama" rather than find him on the ballot, and the two civics geniuses who didn't realize W can't have a third term.
The only big race that's still up in the air is the Minnesota recount. There's not much the campaigns can do for that outside of going to court and raising funds to do so. A few weeks ago, Franken sought and was denied the right to question the rejection criteria of some absentee ballots.
Now, a Minneapolis precinct is reporting 133 less votes in their recount than were cast on Election Day. That's a heavily blue area of the state, which Franken led November 4th. They went into this recount with, I believe, Coleman +216 statewide. Further complicating things: that precinct polling place was a church which isn't too cooperative with any state investigations into recount matters.
I have a feeling this is going to get ugly the next couple weeks.
I went to bed last night and Coleman was leading Franken by two votes in the Minnesota recount. I just checked it again, and Franken's leading by 78. I'd love to see that happen, and for the first time it appears it actually might...
Gov. Pawlenty may appoint an interim seat-holder if this isn't resolved by their Jan 6th inauguration.
