hello inforooers, so i've decided i need a lesson in beer. My friend is very knowledgable in crafts and different brews and he took the time to read about it. Which is sort of what i plan on doing. But i also want to start buying some good beers for weekends. My question to anyone, first beer i should try??
I am not a total beer noob... Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Do you have any microbreweries near you? They usually offer samplers. Once you figure out which style you prefer (lager, pilsner, ale, stout, or fruity-ass Belgian wheat beers that my friends give me hell for liking!) then you know which ones to focus on & which to avoid.
This site is helpful, both in locating breweries and learning more about specific styles: www.craftbeer.com/\
I'm looking to go on an adventure next month, which I have dubbed "Beersylvania".
The original Beersylvania was a weekend trip to various breweries in Pennsylvania - Golden Avalanche (Kutztown), Yuengling (Pottsville), Troegs (Harrisburg), Stoudts (Adamstown), and Victory (Downington). Me and my best friend did all that, mostly on a Saturday except for driving into Pottsville and stopping at Kutztown on the way over.
The 2012 edition is expanding to neighboring states and probably three days instead of two. My thoughts so far include: Victory Stewart's (Bear DE) Sly Fox (somewhere near Victory) Max's Taphouse (Baltimore) Brewer's Art (Baltimore) Heavy Seas (Baltimore) Evolution (Delmar DE) Dogfish Head (Rehoboth DE) Yards (Philly)
I'd like to get to at least most of that list. If anyone here has suggestions, or wants to join for parts - I'm open.

My first brewed beer came out awesome. It's a german altbier and I can't find any flaws in it. It has a carbonation level similar to Newcastle, but the flavor is malty hoppyness with a good bitter flavor that balances it out really well. I am almost half way through with drinking it all, but I have my next batch in process and it's been fermenting for a week now. I am being really picky about drinking it and I want to have a few bottles to try later this year to see how aging effects it.
I definitely find brewing a fun hobby, but it takes almost 10 hours worth of time to make 5 gallons including brewing it, transferring it to secondary carboy, and cleaning bottles and bottling it. It also takes a monthof time from start to finish with 2-3 weks fermentation and two weeks bottle conditioning.
To start off brewing, you don't have to use all grains and instead use the concentrated malt sugars. It takes around $200 for all the supplies and 5 gallon batches are around $40-$60. Probably will buy my next brew kit soon. Currently brewing an American Pale Ale.
If anyone is interested in seeing my pictures, I posted a how to brew on instagram under rideincircles also under #howtobrew.
Besides that, I am drinking as much Strawberry Abita as I can right now.

i used search and didnt see anything and im sure they do but do they have guinness at roo? i cant listen to flogging molly without a guinness in my hand
Last night I had a beer from our local brewery Jackalope. It was a hefeweizen called LoveBird that had strawberry and raspberry overtones. I don't normally like fruity beers or most hefeweizens for that matter, but this was one of the BEST beers I have ever had.

I hope they have it, because i agree. I need me a Guinness. I wish I could get a half and half.. is that what they're called? The dark beer sits in the bottom with a light beer ontop, and it stays sepereated.. like BLue Moon or something? That's all we drank on St. Patty's day was hallf and halves(if that's what they're called)

Black and tan... half dark, half light. Usually Guinness and Harp lager.

Need to get out to Yazoo soon since I'm in the area now. Any other local breweries I need to check out? Seems like the selection of beers is MUCH smaller in TN than Maryland overall.

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Anyone else use LetsPour.com? I got my first shipment (very well packed) yesterday and am thrilled. Awesome selection, easy to get free shipping, and lots of promo crap to cheapen things up. Picked up a bunch of stuff that's tougher to get in Denver...
