I found this on Mike Gordon's MySpace comment area and it really aggravated me. Here's the message:
Who would think that some day I would miss all the circle-spinning, patchoulie-smelling, hippies, but today is that day. Replaced with custy-ass, high-school, rich kids, at bonnaroo this year, made one yearn for the old days of tour kids/lot kids, those people that you would see at every show, and when a ragin' solo happened, you knew they were enjoying it just as much as you. Not this year, the one phrase I can wrap up this year with is, "Custies don't know!". These lathargic not a very nice persons got to see Trey w/ Mike w/ Beneveto/Russo Duo w/ Phil Lesh, they don't deserve it. Mutha Fukas that ask staff members where shakedown street is, don't deserve to have the best weather bonnaroo has ever had, People that ask if I know where he can "find any drugs" don't deserve to see Oysterhead. Bonnaroo, considering the Music, weather, and how it was carried out, was probably at it's best this year, but I don't think I will ever go back. Bonnaroo's population, right now is close to, and will soon be, 50/50, tour-rats selling bad drugs and the Custies that buy them. Something I don't want to be a part of. Friday late night I personally saw so many under 18 year-olds, so gone on some pyschodelic, they have probably never taken before, and it rather quickly turned from funny to just down-right sad. I don't know what Bonnaroo, as an organization, can do about it, but they need to do something, before they get in alot of trouble, and after going '02, '03, '04, and '06, this year I had probably the best time, but I will never go again.
As an "under 18-year-old" his whole mischaracterization really makes me mad. I understand there is a portion of kids who go just to get messed up but the vast majority of us go for the music and spread a healthy, communal vibe just like everyone else. This line up did lend itself to a different crowd, but that crowd still came for the music (Radiohead, Bright Eyes, DCFC). This year was as great as '04 and '05, if not better -- and definitely not anymore "custy" as other years. The guy even admits that this was the best time and yet somehow resolves that because of the small minority of kids who were all f-ed up that it isn't worth coming back.
I do agree that this year was the best weather thus far.
I just thought that comment on MySpace would interest everyone here and I'd be curious as to what everyone else thinks.
I have no idea what bug crawled up that kid's ass.
yeah, sure I heard a few "What's shakedown street?"s and some "Who's up on stage?"s at the superjam, but those people were newbies to a scene that has newbies come into it with everyshow..
I'd say the first timers to the scene chose the right thing to come to bonnaroo for thier introduction.
I only agree that there were a lot of underage kids. I'm only 20 so I barely make the cut off though. Our neighbors were the coolest kids but were on a cocktail of drugs the entire time, we found out Sunday they were all 17. It did get sad to see so many kids freaking out, the main problem I suspect was not knowing the correct dosage (Overheard one kid ask a friend how many doses to take, 5 was the answer, luckily his other friend stopped him). Many of my local friends know Broo as THE drug festival, but it's more about the music than hanging out in the campsite all day tripping balls.

have to agree with you on the first part - and I was one of those first timer's that occasionally asked my husband who was onstage - but that is because this is the music he listens to and I was appreciateive enough of that to go and enjoy the hell out of it!
Bonnaroo was the perfect scene for me to realize a new appreciation for "jam band" music.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.
Plus for underage people, the 'roo is a rgeat place without parents where they won't get caught. I personally didn't do anything but smoke, and only a little bit, but I'm 16 so I figure that's how they think.
Well it was a huge custie fest, the roo scene isnt what it used to be. So i gotta admit that i totally understand where hes comming from. But with that said, fucking radiohead played fucking bonnaroo this year and all those stupid hating hippies that were missing from the "scene" this year missed it.
i also thought this was a gordo rant and almost blew a gasket. who gives a flying fuck about this dickheads opinion. i do agree that this crowd was different. but i am far more pissed about all the breakins and whatnots then i am about youngins experimenting with drugs at roo. what better/safer place to learn aboutt hat shit. we all started somewhere. oh well hopefully he wont be back. im not for the change of crowd but i didnt notice a change in thie vibe and thats what matters. aslong as they arent ruining my time i dont care what they do.
Because before this year, nobody asked anyone else about drugs...
And seriously, this is where the older crowd gets conservative-- how do guys like the one who made this comment think they got started in any scene? Was he born 30-something with an articulated bong in one hand and a copy of Relix in the other?

LOL RooSkew! I've heard lots of negativity from lots of people who were sad that the typical jamband headliners weren't there - WP, SCI, Keller Williams, etc... and were downright rude to people that were there to see DCFC, Bright Eyes, Radiohead. I'm a huge Spreadneck and I hope Panic never plays Bonnaroo again. Personally I like seeing different bands headline my favorite festival. Those who can't handle the change should stay at home and reminisce about the "good old days" while I and 80,000 of my closest friends enjoy some new music. I just wish people would stop being so closed-minded about what is outside of their imaginary comfort zone.
this years roo was the best yet. I never noticed ANY bad vibes. I do not mind the crowd change (if there even is one? I didn't even pay attention) because everyone I talked too or was around me were really cool people. I did however notice more younger people walking around trying to find drugs. I didn't notice too many people freaking out though.

I don't understand why people won't accept change. the scene isn't always going to be filled with people who went to lemonwhell or saw jerry back in the early 90s. Concerts like bonnaroo are great for people who love music to get introduced to the "scene" and find their place in it. Everyone should welcome the new comers, not exclude them.
