Saturday was one of those nights that reminded me why I spend so much of my time and money seeing live music.
Connor Barwin's Make The World Better Benefit show @ Union Transfer
The Suffers - 2nd time seeing them, and they are just unbelievable live. First time was at a ~150 person club, this time was at a 1k venue and they more than held their own. Their sets have a great blend of soulful R&B cuts, mixed with fast-paced funky latin-infused jams + ridiculously awesome Outkast cover. GO SEE THIS BAND
Marian Hill - They sounded good, just not my style of electro-pop
Mac Demarco (solo) - I never thought I'd hear a crowd be asked to sing a guitar riff, but it happened and was surprisingly effective. He's just such a funny dude, and his music is great. He also covered a bit of Nickelback's Photograph (cc smellycat)
Parquet Courts - I've had tix to see these guys twice and haven't been able to make it. Once was at a church basement and the other was a tiny art space. I had so much damn fun during their set, but about half of the crowd left right after Mac's set which was really a bummer. Felt bad for the band.
~After Party @ Underground Arts~
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Got there right after their set started and was let in for free . I had a shit-eating grin on my face the entire show. Just an absolute blast. I was pretty kicked in the ass at this point, and I haven't listened to much of their stuff, but it seemed like a few tracks had some surf rock influence. Also, what's not to love about some live fucking yazz flute.
This was at the end of a 2 hour Lightning Bolt show. The only time I felt it safe to pull my phone out. I haven't seen too many shows in my days, but the ones I've seen have been pretty high energy. Qotsa, The Men, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, ect... Evens few cheese metal shows. This was just a whole different level. The drummer just isn't human. It didn't make any sense at all. There's nothing that will ever top the energy and noise I experienced last night.
Just got back from Collin Hay (Men At Work), The Violent Femmes, and Barenaked Ladies, and man was it an awesome show. The Violent Femmes sounded perfect, pretty much studio quality. Barenaked Ladies also sounded great, wasn't a fan of their newer stuff, but all the old classics were great. Collin Hay was also a pleasant surprise, very funny, and sounded great as well.
I saw Death Grips and Failure over the past week and a half. I feel like I won't be able to enjoy any concerts in the near future because they both were so incredible. I was on the railing for Failure and Death Grips was just total chaos in the pit.
Can't believe we are on same page since May 10th. Anyhow, Rolling Stones at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the 4th of July was spectacular and pretty unique show to experience them at.
Neil Young in Cincy was really rockin'! Definitely made up for fact that his tour with Crazy Horse last year never made it very close around here. Played for a rather long time too. I was worried that since he was playing with Promise of the New as his band they would do the new album more or less entirely and not have a big repertoire otherwise but this definitely was not the case. Neil sounded great and there was plenty of great guitar jamming throughout too!

How was the turnout? There were still a ton of tickets when I checked a couple of days before the show

Pretty strong I'd say. I looked on ticketmaster the day of and they had the feature where you can pick your own seat. There were seats available in several areas of the pavilion but it wasn't barren. Also I looked back a couple times during the show and the lawn looked pretty full as well which I wasn't sure if it would be given the threat of severe weather last night.
What irritated me back when the tickets went on sale I got mine immediately (public on sale, not a presale) and was in row PP on the aisle so probably best of anyone at the point. The next day the browser tab was still open so I checked again and I guess either because a.) the next price level wasn't selling as much as they would have wanted or b.) maybe just because they were taking advantage of my enthusiasm to be getting tickets right away (thus sticking me with ones that would be harder to sell later) but for the same price I paid they were offering about 15 rows closer. In the end this worked out okay because we found some unsold seats around that area anyhow and sat in them all night instead.
Saw Death Grips last night. A must see. These must be the longest shows they've done. 1 hr and 20 minutes of mayhem spanning their entire discog.
Fucking awesome, glad you got to go!
I kept hoping to score a last minute ticket, but it never worked out. I almost lucked out a few days ago. They must have released a few more, because I checked, and it said, "All tickets currently in baskets" instead of "Sold Out". Was like that for another 10 minutes or so before going. And people were wanting $80+ on StubHub...no thanks to that!
I was shocked how quickly this show sold out. Usually it seems Austin waits til the last minute to buy tickets, but this one sold out MONTHS ago.

Yeah the Mohawk and transmission events released a limited amount on like Monday or Tuesday and I was lucky enough to be online right when they posted it. But it sold out again in like 2 hours. Amazing how quickly those sold out the first time too though, they were only on sale for like 3 days!

Friday night we had Josh Wink here in Knoxville. I was excited since Headroom was throwing the party and that means it would have an underground/boiler room feel to it and lots of lasers. I was also excited to see Josh Wink but I thought of him as somewhat past his prime. A legend, but in the way that gets thrown around when referring to anyone still making music 20 years later. The show was fantastic and Josh Wink was funny and kind. I can see why he is still booked all these years later. I wish more people would have come out and were exposed to a really good DJ but this IS Knoxville.
At Manson and Pumpkins. Manson was decent and threw up a bunch of references to their time here. Overall they kicked it but the overt satan shit can be tedious if not unexpected. Beautiful People and Dope Show were highlights. It was too early so slightly under appreciated. Pumpkins sound pretty good too. They are putting some effort out, so I appreciate that. B- \m/

Both were awesome, but the crowd was super weak with no enthusiasm or energy. It was hot/humid as fuck, but still. I loved how both insulted the crowd. Manson saying "This song is 21 years old...are you?" Corgan saying "I'm so glad I can be a background for your selfies. I'm like the Eifel tower right now." All the other shows have gotten an encore of either Geek U.S.A. or Today. We didn't get shit for an encore. Boo that crowd.
I am so fucking sick of people recording shows with their cell phones. People were doing it at Judas Priest last Saturday in Biloxi with the gotdamn flash on. So their flash was lighting up like a dozen people in front of them. This old dude was doing it too and literally had his phone recording video with bright flash on and his phone was so close to the guy in front of him that the whole side of his face was lit up. Why can't people just enjoy the experience?
Yeah, it was definitely a zombie crowd, but Monday and 8:00pm is so damn early (in the week and in the night for here). I had fun, and I'm glad I went.

You have no idea how much that pisses me off. If you're going to take a picture or record, TURN THE FUCKING FLASH OFF! First, you're not helping your picture at all, that flash isn't going to light up the stage. All you're doing is irritating all those around you by shining a light in their face. I've asked people to turn the flash off before. And of course, they were completely fucking oblivious that they were even an issue. It's amazing how many people just don't have common sense.
New Manson music is garbage to me, but was worth it to hear classics. Lunchbox was the definite highlight of that show for me followed by Angel With The Scabbed Wings, Rock is Dead and Coma White. Really hope their is a 20th anny tour for Antichrist next year, really need to hear Little Horn, Reflecting God etc live.
Manson is playing Biloxi Hard Rock on fucking Halloween! and Shreveport the next night. Voodoo= ya blew it, yet again.
Smashing Pumpkins were incredible. My #2 pure 90's band growing up, after NIN. Billy sounded really good, and having Jimmy in the band def made the experience. I've only seen the Pumpkins once, at Voodoo '07, and I feel that them without Jimmy is NOT the Pumpkins, as he makes such a big part of their sound.
The hands down highlight of the show and the whole night was Thru the Eyes of Ruby. Knowing that was on the tour setlist, I mean, I'd pay for the ticket just for that, my fav song off of Melloncolliel, prob my fav album of the 90's, tied with like Pretty Hate Machine or Downward Spiral.
Anyways, yea, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, and the always awesome Mayonaise were my highlights. Would have loved for X.Y.U, Rhinocerous, Window Paine, We Only Come Out At Night, Crestfallen, Pug, Perfect, Heavy Metal Machine, Soma, Geek USA etc.
As mentioned by Longinus, the crowd sucked ass. We were on top of the stairs most of the night, but we'd be at the bottom for the end of sets and people weren't even singing along to Beautiful People. GTFO outta here.
Awesome tour by washed up 90's bands enjoyed by aging 90's weirdos. I'll take it where I can get it.
Great follow up to the awesome NIN/Soundgarden cobill ast year. Need a Jane's Addiction/Primus/Tool variation tour next summer.

I think we should just reflect on the fact that people at a Judas Priest show had cell phones that could take videos.
Speaking of Priest, how was the show? That's another band I thought Voodoo might try to grab for Halloween early, but it was not to be. Here's the writeup on the Pumpkins' set from local music writer Keith Speara. He's a good guy and covers about 60% of the music stories (along with Allison Federstock).
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is not generally considered to be warm and fuzzy, not even by Corgan himself. "I've been accused of having a really bad attitude," he declared during the Pumpkins' show at Bold Sphere Music at Champions Square on Monday (July 20). "Which is really unfair, because I have a really, really bad f---- attitude."
Corgan was consistently crotchety on Monday. After a particularly heavy "Drum + Fife" earned a respectable cheer from the sizable crowd, he quipped, "Yeah, awesome." The sarcasm was obvious; rock star pretense, preening and pandering do not interest him.
Following a set by Marilyn Manson, he and his fellow Pumpkins arrived onstage a few minutes ahead of their scheduled start time. For the next 90 minutes, they rendered heavy guitar rock with ferocity and purpose. They were business-like to the point of impersonal.
That Jimmy Chamberlin, the once-troubled, now-clean drummer from the Pumpkins' 1990s heyday, is back in the fold is a good thing. Corgan's walls of distortion, topped by his fully intact sneer/snarl of a wail, required a stout foundation, which Chamberlin supplied. Originally a jazz drummer, he developed a potent rock posture, which is undiminished.
In the current incarnation of the Pumpkins, Corgan and Chamberlin are joined by guitarist Jeff Schroeder and bassist Jack Bates. Early in the set, Schroeder handled many of the solos, including a sculpted outing on "Ava Adore." Together, they make for a powerful unit, as evidenced by the clanging, struttering stomp and swirl of "Zero."
Against a stage backdrop of long fabric sheets, they dropped one compact metallic bomb after another, keeping extraneous excursions to a minimum. Corgan saved most of his "interaction" for a wry discussion in the second half of the show.
"Never in a million years did I imagine I'd be the backdrop for people's selfies," he deadpanned, comparing himself to the Eiffel Tower. Apropos of nothing, he announced, "I know you all are waiting for the Beatles." Perhaps inspired by the massive photograph decorating a wall of Champions Square, he then suggested the next act on the bill was Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Brees received a far more enthusiastic cheer than the Beatles.
Reconsidering his own stage patter, he continued, "I should update it for 2015. Katy Perry is coming on after us."
With a sea of bewildered faces now staring back at him, Corgan shifted gears. "Who's having a good time here? I'd love to know."
Variations on the "who's having fun" riff, even when delivered with Corgan's steadfast disinterest, always elicit a response, even on a long, muggy night in Champions Square. "That was more hands than I expected. Thank you for that."
Shortly thereafter, he delivered a lovely, delicate "Disarm" alone with an acoustic guitar. Schroeder joined him for an unplugged cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide"; it proved to be the set's most – and only – intimate moment.
Acoustic detour complete, they plugged in once again. A soaring "1979" gave way to "Run2Me," "Thru the Eyes of Ruby," "Stand Inside Your Love" and a final "United States." Corgan introduce the latter with a Hendrix-ian bit of "The Star Spangled Banner" on guitar. "United States" concluded with him and Schroeder in tandem seeking out their instruments' highest possible notes.
At recent shows on The End Times Tour, the Pumpkins have encored with either "Today" or "Geek U.S.A." Perhaps because they were running a few minutes behind schedule – it was nearly 11 p.m. when "United States" crashed to a close – there was no encore in New Orleans. Corgan slowly made his way to either side of the stage for a deliberate wave, then disappeared.

Itching to see MMJ again after witnessing them play last night. Love how they give you everything they have in the time span that their suppose to play. The only words I believe spoke to the crowd was Jim saying "good evening" and "good night". My three favorite songs from the show were "Wonderful", "What a Wonderful Man", and "Tropics". Would have like to hear "One Big Holiday" and "Big Decisions", but I'll live. Being on a Tuesday in the summer of a college town, it wasn't crowded. Was able to get beers and use the restroom without giving up a good viewing spot....miss out on that at festivals.
Fingers crossed that they headline Shaky Knees in 2016!
The ONLY good thing about having Cancer is I have no worries about getting time off for going to a show . Saw Neil Young last Sunday night in Burlington VT. As usual he opened with very traditional acoustic set, AWESOME. Then electric came out and as usual political Neil came out . I was astonished by the high volume of those that left when the eletric came on . I stayed and enjoyed the entire set .
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
