I saw Lonnie Holley and Mary Lattimore this week and it was really special. I'd never seen Lonnie before even though he plays around Atlanta a fair amount and he was really captivating. He absolutely does not play songs from his album. It's really more just him up there expressing himself. If he was less talented I would define it as just dicking around but he has a really beautiful voice and does actually play melodies on the keys.
At this particular show Lonnie had Lee Bains accompany him on guitar and Mary Lattimore played a few songs along on the harp. It was really interesting to hear Lee follow along on the guitar and improvise along with whatever Lonnie happened to be doing.
The highlight of the show for me was definitely watching Mary create stuff with them. It was amazing to watch her play a fucking harp along with the keys and guitar. She so deftly created loops and deployed them with ease along with her own improvisation and it really created something beautiful. Multiple times they all settled into a really amazing groove that sounded like a well-written song. It was really kind unlike anything I'd seen before.
how full was the crowd? hoping to get through all my christmas shopping before i get these tickets, i don't feel like it'll sell out but he hasn't been here in a decade.
Don’t sleep on tickets! My show sold out maybe two weeks before the show! I didn’t expect it to!
Just saw Steven Wilson fer the first time since I last caught Porcupine Tree back in...maybe 2008? That show was so fuckin’ awesome! And I got to share it with one of my oldest friends and best concert buddy! Total bro night. Two beers a piece.
Anyway, he offered a pretty good mix of his solo material and his other bands. I would’ve preferred other Porcupine Tree songs personally, but I was still really happy to hear those tunes live again!
Freddie Fucking Gibbs put on a great show last night. I'll see him every chance I get, I hope he does some festivals next summer. Pretty sure he was so high he couldn't even open his eyes lol
Just saw Dawes for the 7th time tonight. Very good, as usual, but not quite as special as their last Boston show two years ago. As someone who prefers their first three albums to their three most recent albums, I walk into any Dawes show knowing that I'm not likely to get the setlist of my dreams, until they start doing "older albums in their entirety" shows.
Taylor Goldsmith opened the second set with a solo performance of a new song, "It Didn't Fix Me." It was one of the highlights for me and definitely got me excited about the inevitable solo acoustic tour. Here's a video of it that someone posted.
Apparently, he's been opening the second sets with solo performances of various unreleased new songs on this tour.
The thing I always wonder about bands/artists who don't have big hits is whether their setlists are comprised of the songs that they really want to play or whether they play songs which they perceive as being favorites of most of their fans. I wouldn't mind it at all if they retired "Most People" and "Things Happen" for awhile. It's funny, with some artists I've seen many times, the songs they usually play live are my favorites (Wilco, Richard Thompson), but with other artists, I rarely hear more than a couple of my favorite songs by them (Elvis Costello, Guided By Voices).
Saw KISS in Anaheim last night. Even though I only know a small handful of their songs it was a hell of a spectacle, almost hilarious at times how over-the-top it went.
Snuck into the pit for Astroworld last night. I’m 21 and felt old there. Production was great, Travis was expectedly not a great singer/rapper but the crowd was nuts. Sheck was way better than anticipated. I also watched two 17 year old girls get pregnant during Skeletons and one wouldn’t keep her hands off me while that was going on. Not the most pleasant part of the night but some great moshing made it worth it

He did not. And they were just dancing DIRTY. So dirty even 2 live crew would blush

What was your secret to getting on the floor?
Log in to my friend’s Ticketmaster and use her ticket to get a wristband. Had to buy a normal ticket to scan into the building obviously
they can't scan for the band right because your ticket gets scanned at the door? that seems like a much better plan than carrying 20 different colored wristbands at all times. just split 1 floor ga however many ways and do that

It wasn’t RFID. Just your usual paper band you can buy at Party City. They gave the band when you walked to the pit

Nice trick. I heard another strategy is to ask for a wristband later because you accidentally entered through the main entrance rather than the special GA line.

Back in my day a bunch of people would just gather near the front of a section (usually near the back of the arena) and then someone would shout Go! And everyone would bumrush the floor like a hockey line change. Ahhhh to be 15 again.
I saw a guy called Steve Smyth last weekend, and he was so good! I haven't seen any talk about him on Inforoo but I reckon he's a name to keep an eye on.
Just saw Grateful Shred in DC. Now if you’re rolling your eyes about another Dead tribute I get it, but holy shit they were ripping and disclaimer: I’m not a guy that loves everything dead and it doesn’t matter the quality of the band. The dudes have a fresh energy about them and make it their own a little bit. They had a live trippy mineral oil light show projection going on well that was perfect. Highly recommend giving it a shot if you care. The place was packed out and they were going after it. Highly recommend it.

That fucking show 2 years ago blew me away. It was probably my 6th or 7th show and too be honest I wasn’t very stoked becuase I wasn’t loving the most recent records, but Jesus the energy in that show was unreal and they were ripping. Walked away completely blown away and it was possibly the best show of theirs I saw. Top 2 for sure
Robyn was so good. The whole show definitely matched the psychedelic tone of Honey: there were lots of instrumental breaks, long transitions between songs, and motifs from previously played songs popping up later in the set. also, the crowd acapella singalong was sooooo incredible.
Also Kindness opened with a DJ set where he just...didn’t even try to beat match the first five or so songs??? But he also played “High Horse”, so.
