Saw Fleet Foxes last night in Athens, and it was such a wonderful show. All 4 of the singers sounded so amazing harmonizing, and the Georgia theatre really made the show great. The crowd was very mellow, not too many people dancing, but they erupted after every song, so that's good. I just can't wait until they have more material under their belt so they can go 2+ hours. The length would definitely be my only gripe, but beggars can't be choosers. They played a new song that was "unfinished" and it was soooo good. Didn't catch the name (dunno if they even said the name), but I'm on the lookout for a recording or something.
Dude, how many of us are from the Atlanta area? Don't we get the most awesome shows here? I was just saying that to a friend of mine
I'm totally miserable about the fact that I didn't go to Umphrey's or David Byrne in Sept. a combination of schedule and cashflow issues.
But, I did get to go see Bobby Lee Rogers and the Codetalkers at Smith's end of August (Great little venue, lots of great music comes through there...) Tea Leaf Green at the 40 Watt Club in Athens in early Sept. Moonalice opened for them, same as when they played at the Variety Playhouse in May. Didn't care much for Moonalice in May, but they quacking blew me away this time. Donna the Buffalo at the Variety Playhouse a couple of weeks ago--by the way guys, I live like 3 miles from there so next time your seeing a show, message me, okay?!? I see tons of stuff there! I wanted to go see Gogol Bordello, but couldn't find anyone to go with me and didn't feel like going alone. Going to see Phil Lesh this weekend probably, maybe Allman Bros. next weekend, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on 10/17 (again at VP, I swear that is my favorite venue lately, not only b/c of proximity) Widespread Panic on 10/18, then Magfest the following weekend and Sasha the weekend after that.

We live about two miles from Smiths (for another month anyway)! We saw Turtle Folk and the Afromotive there . . . they were great, but we got there way too early so by the time the Afromotive went on, I was worn out!
Good comedy shows here, too . . . we saw Louis CK and Cheech and Chong in the last couple of weeks, and we're going to see Brian Posehn at the Earl in a couple of weeks.
It was the comedy thing that got me telling my friend about shows here actually. My boyfriend is a huge Joe Rogan fan and he's playing at the punchline this weekend (boyfriend is unfortunately in florida ) which led to the convo about how tons of fantastic comedy and music come through here.
I live like a mile from the Earl(in Ormewood Park), maybe we'll meet up with you guys for Brian Posehn. When is it?

Yeah we are quite lucky! ;D I was also at that TLG show in Athens, first time seeing them and they were very good
Soo The Black Keys were last weekend. I was on the the very front row...I've gotten some amazing concert views this year!
The opening band was Jessica Mayfield, they were between alright and good. She was defintiely a a talented singer as was the band, but the band members were a little over the top with their self imposed geekiness. They looked like they were trying to hard to steal attention form Jessica....except the drummer, he was cool. The vocals were nice...I could hear her loud and clear.
When The Black Keys came out and began singing I could barely hear a word he was singing. It was ridiculous! The music was great but his mic must have been turned down too low or something. I'm not sure if he noticed that we couldn't hear him. So...basically the only lyrics I heard were coming from the tone deaf Summers breeze bag that stood behind me.
So I was pretty dissapointed, although I am not knocking the band. I am knocking their sound crew for sure. Other than that they were great. They had great energy and the music was amazing. They could have played longer. I don't know the exact set list but they probably played less than an hour and a half and I don't even think they played all the songs from Attack and Release.
I was looking forward to going to this show and had a choice between seeing The Black Keys and The Swell Season. I chose The Black Keys because I saw most of the Swell Season show at Roo and I have never seen The Black Keys. Well, I think I made a mistake b/c I know The Sewll Seaosn would have kicked ass again and thye played at The Palladium which is my favorite smaller venue in Dallas. But, oh well. I got some great pictures of the show that I will post when I am not so lazy.
Overall, I am still glad I got to see them but I am pretty dissapointed. Maybe I'll be able to see them again when I can actually hear the words.

My Morning Jacket last night= best show ever!!!. I cant even begin to explain... i was front row center, litterally inches from jim james... it coulndt have been a better night

where was the show?
the sound issue could have been related to how close to the stage you were... if you were at the Granada, it really makes sense...
the front usually has worse sound because the sound guys are in the middle/back of the room. also, you would have been getting sound directly from the amplifiers, but the vocals only come through the PA, and those were probably directly above your head, pointing to the crowd behind you
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

the sweet spot is front row/balcony
Yeah I like the balcony better myself, especially since there is a bar so close, but the people I were with wanted to be in the front. It was just weird b/c the opening band's vocals were perfectly adjusted.

I don't live in the ATL area. I live in Columbus, which is about an hour and a half south. It seems like I am in ATL at least once a month for a show. I was at the Gogol Bordello show. It was pure awesomeness. I think I will be at Smiths for Porter-Batiste-Stoltz on the 30th. Then I will be at the Sasha the next day too.

the Roots and Gym Class Heroes are Saturday in Dallas, and Bass nectar is later that night. I might have to check out bassnectar afterwards. After that Girl Talk and Minus the bear, possibly REM and Kings of Leon also. I saw Hot Chip and My Morning Jacket in Dallas and both of them were awesome. Also all of those shows other than Bassnectar I got free tickets to ,and in Finland I got to see Propagandhi and Voodoo Glow Skulls for free also. I also saw the Unseen there. I lucked out with concerts lately.
Black Keys at Madison Theater in Covington, Kentucky Friday night and one of my friends bailed on us. But the good news is he wants to give away his ticket, so if anyone is interested in seeing the Black Keys Friday night, hit me up.
i saw atmopshere on monday night, and while i'm not a HUGE hip-hop fan, it was good beats and intelligent, socially concious lyrics... i had fun for sure
tuesday night i saw Phil Lesh and the Allman Bros in alabama
that was hella fun, although it was hard to hear Gregg singing

Thursday night, I saw George Jones with his band. Great show, played allot of his older hits (can't play many, because the guy literally had dozens of hits), some newer songs, and his band was great. I really loved the on-stage banter; George would introduce breakdowns in structure, comment on someone's playing, etc. They were just having a great time on stage, obviously. He had a back up singer doing some Tammy Wynette parts, she was great.
Especially considering that it was at a state fair, it was a fantastic show. George is old, and his voice is obviously weathered, but his performance is still energetic and hugely entertaining.
Then, last night, I saw Jonathan Richman in Chapel Hill at the Local 506...
I kid you not, mere words cannot describe how incredible last night was; as a show, as a fun experience, for humour, and as a personal moment I will never forget for the rest of my life. Going in, I was only really familiar with his stuff with Modern Lovers, one of my favorite albums of all time. I knew a little bit of his solo material, but not enough to recognize more than 3 songs.
The Local 506 is a small, mostly local, venue... show was to begin at 8:30, we got there at 8:15 and there were literally 5 other people there not including the club staff. Over the course of an hour and a half, this once comfortable venue turned into a steaming sardine can of 70+ people. There was no AC, only one fan, and Jonathan and Tommy (drummer) were well over an hour late. It was HOT... without doubt, the hottest indoor concert I've ever attended, and people were getting a little antsy.
Finally Jonathan and Tommy show up, they jump right into it, and the crowd could care less that we were sitting in an over 100 degree room. What we did care about was the fantastic show before us. Jonathan sang and played songs about romantic awkwardness, revelation, and disdain with a child like innocence that only he can pull off. Honestly, I have to say that the crowd's reception of the show was among the best I've ever seen.
About an hour and a half into the show, the guys wrap it up with a damning call to cell phones, which brought smiles and laughter out of everyone in attendance. As the audience is applauding wildly, the drummer quickly exits the venue as Jonathan puts on his jacket and prepares to put up his guitar... but he doesn't. He turns around, and sans drummer, goes into a song he wrote about visiting his mother in the nursing home. It was simply put, one of the most touching performances I've ever seen. At the end of the song, he was at the point of tears, briefly.
After this, a good 4/5 of the audience head out... the rest (myself and friends included0 went to the front of the stage, where Jonathan shook everyone's hand and spoke to everyone. My friend went and gave him a hug and spoke about the song about his mother. He told her that she had died 4 years ago . He was so humble and appreciative of the fans outcries of support. I went up to him, extended my hand and said " Thank you... Thank you SO much... " He squeezed my hand and gave a look of appreciation that made me long to be in that place. I later came back and he signed my shirt.
I will never forget last night til the day I die. A truly inspirational and life altering experience.
If any of you get a chance, go see Jonathan Richman in concert... you will not regret it. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. Better yet, one of the best experiences of my life.

I saw the Black Keys last night and it was a memorable experience to say the least. 3 songs into their set, their fog machine set off the fire alarm. They continued to play through it like nothing was wrong, but soon after, they cut the stage lights and sound. The fire marshall came in and said we all had to leave so they could thoroughly search the building. After a 1/2 hour and almost near riot outside, they let us back in and the Keys dominated the rest of their set. I have heard of shows where the black keys had balance and volume problems but they seemed to have brought their A game last night. Excellent show. And the Royal Bangs opened for them and they weren't all that bad.
I went to go see two nights of Umphrey's in VT this weekend, and they nailed it. Friday afternoon, my friends and I left Boston pretty late, because I had some stuff to do - so we missed Conspirator's opening set (Disco Biscuits side project) and the first few songs of Umphrey's set (we walked in towards the end of Resolution)
Friday was really good, but Saturday was absolutely phenomenal (of course, that may have had something to do with my state of mind at the time ). They were so on key. They did a lot of jams and a couple covers as well. The concert was at Higher Ground in Burlington - which, if you're not familiar, is a really nice club with a very small capacity (not sure exactly how many people it holds, but I doubt it was over 500). We got pretty far up front both nights, and I got some really amazing shots. I'll post them here later, once I find the cord that connects my camera to the computer. All in all, it was one of the best weekends I've had since Roo, and a mini-vacation was sorely needed.
Here's the set list:
10.10.08 Higher Ground South Burlington, Vermont
Set One: The Bottom Half > Glory > The Bottom Half, Liquid > Resolution^ > Dear Prudence^^ > Another Brick In the Wall^^, #5
Set Two: Miss Tinkle's Overture, Ocean Billy*, August, Waist Down, Much Obliged > 2x2
Encore: Lenny > The Floor
Notes:
Conspirator opened [with Jake and Kris sitting in] ^ with Aaron Magner replacing Joel ^^ with Aaron, and Marc Brownstein replacing Ryan * with Kula jam
Set Two: Wappy Sprayberry > Higgins > Kabump > Higgins, Can't Ya Hear Me Knockin', Blue Echo > Wife Soup
Encore: Mulche's Odyssey
Notes Conspirator opened [Kris sat in] * with lyrics
All in all, in the last week, I've gone from being a very casual fan to thinking Umphrey's is the absolute shizzle. Be on the lookout for those pics, fellers.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention two more things - the keyboardist from Umphrey's gave a kernel of corn to my buddy's friend during the set break. Also, my friend's brother is really cool, and his roommate isn't too bad himself (bit of a Masshole, but not too bad)... but the roommate has some sketchy quacking friends. One of them was this massive cokehead who sat up and told us all about his days as a big druq runner (he said he was flipping 2-3 kilos a week, and judging by all the details he knew, such as about the VIN numbers on my Honda and stuff, I believed him). I'm not sure exactly how much of it was bullcrap, but like I said, he just rambled on and on, and you could tell he clearly knew his poop. So, he claims that he used to be Trey Anastasio's dealer for a while, and that he was the guy that sold him the Percocet that got him in trouble.
Ordinarily, if someone told me that, I'd tell him to get the hell out of here - but this guy just would not stop talking, and he listed all these friggin' obscure facts and insider secrets to the whole trade for hours on end, so I figured that either he is a major compulsive liar who really did his research, or he probably was the guy who did that.
I hope he doesn't somehow stumble across this post and come hunt me down. This dude was several screws loose, and if we hadn't been tripping our asses off with nowhere else to stay, we all agreed we would have bolted within the first 15 minutes of meeting him. I don't even want to list some of the other things he mentioned - but suffice it to say, he had some ridiculous stories.
I also did the two Umphrey's shows in Burlington as well as the night before in Clifton Park NY. I agree both shows in Burlington were great but I think Friday night was much better than Saturday night. There were just too many moments where they lost me Saturday. They opened with an amazing Jajunk and then played the next three songs standard which kinda slowed everything down. I'm not a fan of Search 4 either though. Still a good show. I would rank the shows I saw like this:
1) Clifton Park 2) Night 1 of Burlington 3) Night 2 of Burlington
Seeing them again this Friday in Geneva NY, really looking forward to that.
We saw The Black Keys on 10/8 at The Ryman in Nashville... It was freaking amazing. The sound quality inside that place is unbelievable. Jesco the Dancing Outlaw opened, and that was pretty crazy. We had never heard of Jesco. Evidently, he has a pretty large fan-base.
Anyhoo - We have the entire show up for download here: www.jmkm.com/bk_ryman.mp3.zip Enjoy! I am pretty happy with this recording.
Saw Ravi Shankar last night at the University of Florida and words cannot aptly describe how great the show was. It was the greatest show I had ever been to and probably will ever see. Even at the age of 88, Ravi Shankar blew me away with his ability to improvise with his ensemble and play with such virtuosity on the sitar that most people cannot come close to reach on a guitar. The interplay between Shankar and his daughter was amazing. Ravi's daughter is an absolute talent on sitar and also blew me away.
Shankar's tabla player Bikram Ghosh was unreal. His work on a small two drum tabla was break taking as he went into a crazy solo that brought the entire place on its feet. Shankar's younger disciples that played the tambura provided a soothing sound that complemented both Shankars and Ghosh so well.
The amazing part was that they played for about 90 minutes and played only 5 ragas. They seemed to go on forever and every second was amazing. I only wish that they could have played even longer.
Like I said before, this performance was the best I will ever see in my life and I will never forget it as long as I live. This show was truly a spiritual experience like no other.

i had never before seen a concert where a band played all NEW music ONLY. until last july 12 when i saw Medeski, Martin & Wood on the Radiolarians tour. what other band has the balls to do such a thing? it was a great show! and it was at the Jefferson Center, possibly the best small concert venue in Virginia.
