In the past month I saw Grace Potter/Wood Brothers and the Flaming lips. First off the Grace Potter show was great. I had been wanting to see them play since the summer and I was not disappointed. Gracey and the band played for about an hour and 20 min and were just full of energy. I think the thing I like the most is that there is an indie rock feel to some of the solos (some of the solo reminded me of something Thurman Moore would play) If you get around to seeing them I high recommend them.
I also got to see the Flaming Lips play their last show of their American tour and it was crazy. I was all the way in front of the stage where are the craziness was...I even got to touch the the plastic ball on his was back to the stage ( when I looked up he has the big gigantic grin on his face ) I was a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff that was going on from the giant balloons everywhere to the confetti scattered everywhere. They didn't play War Pigs or Rhapsody, but it was still a great set. The one thing that stood out was that Wayne and company helped set up and take down their equipment. I have never seen a band that big do that...its good to see that there is someone that feels they are never too big to do the little things.
I am heading to see Beck next week in Jersey City . I will give a little update on how the new songs sound and how the show was in general. Hopefully it will be better than the set he played at roo.
I saw Man Man play at Emo's Thursday. These guys NEED to play Bonnaroo. Think Captain Beefheart meets Animal Collective. They put on an amazing show...

String Cheese Incident, Washington DC Oct 12 and 13, amazing shows as expected, got backstage passes second nite and chatted with Billy, which was totally unexpected. Great small venue, not a bad seat in the house.
particle tore it up at harvest jam. it was an incredible show. we were camped right next to fire spinners and during particle they were doing the incredible spark throwing thing they do and particle thanked them for doing some of the coolest shit they had ever seen. tlg was also very good. they did an acoustic show fri night and a regular set on saturday. it was a very cold weekend but at leatst it didnt rain. it was well worth facing the cold.
I went to a really good show in Philly about three weeks ago. It was with Architecture in Helsinki and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Awesome awesome live bands.
Then about a month and a half ago I saw A Silver Mt. Zion. Seriously it was the best concert I've ever been to. Great great band. They actually are a splinter band from Godspeed You Black Emperor. Most of them went to A Silver Mt. Zion, but some went to Exhaust and Do Make Say Think (which I'm seeing in November).
And then I went to a real goooood fest nearby called Chuck's Farm, though I don't rememer a lot of it.
im surprised i didnt post this, but Wednesday the 11th, at the Electric Factory in Philly, Trey Anastasio. Mike Gordon came out second set, and it was amazing. The whole show was great, lots of energy from Trey, the band, and the audience. And that was before Mike came out. Heard a couple Phish songs, and they did this long jam thats now being called The Electric Factory Jam that was serious. Dont know how often in life again ill be in that position.

Don't know if this was part of that tour, but I caught The Secret Machines in August at Artscape, the kickass free annual festival in Baltimore. They played an awesome set while it poured and no one cared, then during "Nowhere Again" the rain lifted and a rainbow appeared in the sky, right at these lyrics:
"Maybe the rain will stop following me With millions of colors reflected in daylight Right on the kickdrum Turning the sound up full"
Might I echo PlacidCasual -- Hold Steady, Thursday night in Chicago...awesome.
As an added bonus, they were filming, so let's hope this show turns into a DVD. It was undoubtedly a DVD kind of performance, with some time spent in the crowd by the guitarist, and lots of Metro love from Craig Finn.

You can't plan stuff like that.
NICE DUDE. I was there too. That rainbow was REALLY cool. Artscape is something that I'll be attending every year now that I've gone once.
Saw the Disco Biscuits at the State Theater in Ithaca NY last night. They got that place rockin. The first set was fun and had some good moments but the 2nd set was just fire. I'm not real familiar with the Biscuits material as this was just my 2nd show but I really enjoyed it. This definitely made up for the so-so set they played at All Good this summer. I liked the setlist at All Good better but the playing last night was far superior. Wish I could make it to Rochester for the show tonight. Anybody that has a chance to see them this Fall should do so. This is the first real tour they have done in years so the playing should be outstanding if last night was any indication
Cut Chemist & Lyrics Born at the Abbey Pub in Chicago:
Cut Chemist: Best DJ set I've ever seen. He had the whole visual component taken to another level.
LB: I've seen him five times in the last three years (the most I've seen anyone in that span). This was the second best show (Bonnaroo '06 comes in third) out of those.
Yeah I've heard that their opening shows for the Chili Peppers haven't been that great. They only get an hour and they've been playing alot of new stuff that isn't on any albums(shrugs). See em on their own headlining tour before you write them off.

ok, so i saw trail of dead on friday and they were quite good. hadnt seen them since they opened for QOTSA a few years ago. they didnt play that long for a headliner, and they played mostly old stuff but it was nice and loud. caught the very end of the openning band - blood brothers. not sure what i think of them - i have heard good things, but i am not sure i caught enough to get a good feel.
then satuurday...saw the fiery furnaces. now maybe i am just not as familiar with their latest (bitter tea) or possibily i was just too messed up, but i didnt really like the show as much as the blueberry boat tour. they opened with a 30 minute medley of bitter tea then rolled through some old tunes. it was a fun show, just didnt think it was as good as the first time i saw them. I did however buy bitter tea on vinyl and got it signed by Matt. I saw Elanor but didnt get a chance to have her sign it. All in all, a good weekend of shows.
hookah was great at gory at the quarry. i thought fall hookahville was slightly better. but it was still a great show. i didnt think the weather would be worse then ernesto at fall hookah but it was. it was as bad as it could possibly be. rain, hail, sleet, snow, thunder and lightning, e-z up/tent destroying winds. we only saw hookah and they were actually delayed on saturday due to lightning and it was snowing. very crazy. but they were great both nights. were were trapped in the van for most of the trip. it was really that bad. luckily we had 600 glow sticks and managed to convert the van into a spaceship so it was all good.
Saw Van Morrison last night at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. Great venue awesome show! I know I've heard a lot of negative things about Van on this site and everyone has a right to their opinion. Just do me a favor and if you get a chance to see him , go. I can respect a firsthand opinion but its hard when your sisters boyfriends neighbor says he sucks. Only complaint too darn xpensive. I cant afford to eat today. At least i wont get fat. Front row seats baby!
I caught Primus at the Tower in Philly last night. It was my first time catching them, since I tragically slept through their set at Bonnaroo in 04. I was very impressed with the show, but it was way too short. They only played an hour and 20mins. Other than that it was sweet. I was also able to sneak my camera in so here's some pics......
They're kinda blurry cause I got yelled at when I tried to use my flash(nazi security). I'm going to see MMW w/ Scofield tonight. It's a good weekend.
So MMW w/ Scofield was pretty good. The Electric Factory was sold out, so trying to get close was not an option. The show itself was solid. I just seem to prefer when the guys find that funky groove and stick with it for most of the show. This show wasn't like that, it was alot of the experimental jazz improv. Which I can get into if I'm close and can watch their exchanges and intricacies of their playing. But when it's such a large crowd, they need some tasty grooves to get the crowd movin'. There was a few but it was few and far between. After seeing MMW so many times, it just seems that some shows are far more experimental than others but the ones I enjoy the most are the ones with the down and dirty Medeski funk.
I saw MMW with Scofield in DC on Friday nite, it was very experimental a little too much so for the people I was riding with, and we had to go after the first set, there were some uber sick jams, but a lot of stuff to muddle through to get to them.
