Saw Swans last Friday in nola and they weren't turned up very loud, was kind of disappointing. Show was super packed out too, shoulda gone to see them in P'cola too. Ah well.
of Montreal the next night was wayyyyyyy better. Love knowing all the new songs, they're my favorite oM material in many years.
Highlites: Hydra Fancies had a cool intro with the best new visuals of the tour. The song sounded way better live than it did on the False Priest and Paralytic Tours imo
Apollyon. I'm a sucker for this song, and it was very aggressive live, Kevin looked liked he enjoyed playing it. I talked to Jojo during Yip Deceiver and he said that they aren't playing Monolithic much because the crowds haven't been getting into it. After saying Apollyon was prob my fav song on the album, he said it was his too, and that Kevin wrote it in like a few hours after they had finished recording the album and that he decided to add it in after the fact.
For Our Elegant Caste had a nice long intro and a huge segue/jam before it started. Really enjoyed it. PIAGA was out of control. Seen it about 5x now, and Bonnaroo will always be the most memorable because of them destroying everything on stage, but this one was musically the best. Clayton would kick the drums into overdrive and Jojo was going off pretty hardcore. He ended up smashing his keyboard when the song was over and Kevin just dropped the mic and left the stage. The visuals got very intense with kaleidoscopic mandalas.
We Were Born the Mutants Again with Leafling was incredible. I don't think I'd heard this live since my first show in '07, and it might be my fav from the album, at least since it hasn't been played out live like most of Hissing Fauna, sans Sink the Seine and Cato as a Pun have been. Really nice visuals during this song and it was drawn out extra long, with Kevin getting really into it.
Here's the setlist I wrote down:

Swans w/Little Annie The Parish - Austin, TX - 4/6/2015
Wow, what a show. Little Annie was ok, but not really my thing at all. Just her singing with a piano accompaniment. Definitely good for what she does, just not what I really enjoy listening to.
First, this show was LOUD. I had my earplugs in fully, the whole time, and I still feel it in my ears today. I can't even imagine the people in there without earplugs, they most certainly had some hearing damage last night. I know I sound like an old man, but turn it down a notch or two! Gira has to be half deaf, I didn't see any musician's plugs in his ears. Oh well, I always have my earplugs with me, and glad to see a greater portion of the audience these days are wearing them too. Maybe it's because my dad suffered from hearing loss due to loud concerts, but I want to still be able to hear and enjoy music when I'm much older.
Anyways, onto the show. It was fantastic. Swans played for 2.5 hours, and the setlist was something like:
Frankie M A Little God in My Hands _______ (didn't recognize this song) Just a Little Boy Bring the Sun
I feel like I'm missing a song in there somewhere, but maybe not. For the first 15 minutes of the show, the band slowly filled the stage, adding layer upon sonic layer to the cacophony. It was a sold out crowd, and everyone was very into it.
I loved watching Thor, the percussionist/multi-instrumentalist. And how can you not like a gong?
I'm exhausted, only got 2 hours of sleep last night, so that's all I can write this morning. If you like Swans on record, do yourself a favor and make sure to see them live!
Gira said he'd come out after the show to sign things, but I just picked up a copy of To Be Kind on vinyl and started my trek home.
Hoping to catch a nap today before I head back to Austin for Liturgy/Sannhet tonight.
OK so I am sorry if I haven't been around lately. I totally flaked on both of my band a day's. I need to get on that but I've been traveling and working so much to pay for the traveling, and sick, and spending a lot of time with my son. So I've been kinda busy. I just want to share the concerts I've seen this year in detail and how amazing this year has been for me for live music.
January- Passafire at Snowshoe Ski Resort in WV. 10 dollar show. Went with a big ass group of my friends. It was pretty awesome. The band put on a good show but I was just there for the homies. And I got drunk. Honestly the dance party after the band left was just as fun as the concert.
February- My girlfriend and I saw the Districts in Club Cafe in Pittsburgh. Very intimate show. I loved it. They were amazing live. It was really awesome seeing a band that has the potential to get really huge at this point in their career. Absolutely worth watching at Bonnaroo. I hope they play a club/cafe show along with the stage show.
March 7th, Fleetwood Mac in Charlotte. Hands down one of the best concert experiences of my life. They all seemed so happy to be able to be performing again. They also haven't lost anything with age. I'm a huge fan so this was a dream come true. Danced like crazy. Screamed like crazy. My face hurt from smiling. If I ever have the opportunity I will absolutely see them again. They all sounded so amazing and gave everybody a chance to shine. The back drop was so cool, at times trippy or even scary. Hopefully they do some US festivals next year. Bonnaroo would be amazing as a closer.
March 23rd, The Preatures, The Bots, and some other band I just could not get into while visiting a friend in NYC. Liked the Venue a ton. Spent the first half of the day wandering NYC so when I realized the first act wasn't for me my girlfriend, friend and I went back into the lobby to rest our legs. Went back in to watch most of The Bots set. Really liked them. Lots of energy, good stage presence, and a great sound. It was the second time I had seen The Preatures, the first being at Roo 14. I loved them at roo, but at a club show they really shine. We were right up front getting down. The show was a blast. Definitely hope The Preatures find more success. On a side note right after they left Prince's Kiss came on and my friend and I had to really break it down. We were totally drunk and I got a ticket for jumping the subway turnstile in front of a police man. Worth it.
March 24th, Action Bronson's Album release show. Unfortunately I missed like the first half of the show. We went to eat at an amazing Cuban restaurant and the drinks were to die for and we lost track of time. Still a great show. So hot in there. I was a sweaty mess. So much weed smoking. I was cranky when He left after 40 min cause I didn't realize I was so late. But what I had seen was a straight up party. I can't catch him on this tour but best believe I will on his next.
April 2nd- Alt-j and Tycho in Pittsburgh. Wow what a show. Tycho opened and they were amazing. When I bought the tickets I was kinda bummed it was a theatre show, but it worked out. Everybody chilled during Tycho. And that was totally cool. They were a lot to take in. Crazy back drop and light show. Glad I saw them here so it could free up conflicts at roo. Def watch if you haven't though. Alt-j was pretty mind boggling. They didn't say much but damn they put on a show. I enjoyed the non tradition stage set up of all of them being on the same level on the stage. And even though it was seated it was hard to not get down. They opened with Hunger of the Pine and covered most of what they performed from the second album early in the set. Highlights were Hunger of the Pine, Every Other Freckle, Fitzpleasure, Taro, and Breezeblocks. Nothing was bad though. I am considering seeing them again soon.
Saw The War on Drugs last Friday. The music was good but the show lasted an hour and a half. I don't like getting out of a show at 10:30 on a Friday.
Did hop along open? Are they any good? Seeing WoD Thursday and will probably get there late, wondering if I should leave work early
Hop Along is a really unique punky folk rock band. They've been growing in Philly for a long time now. If it's not a lot of trouble for you I'd suggest checking them out.

yeah, I like their sound from the few songs I have heard. It's an all ages show so doors at 6 show at 7, and the venue is on the west side of town, I live on the east side, and I work in the middle so I'm probably gonna have to leave work early to make their set.
Liturgy w/Sannhet, Horse Lords, and Marriage Austin, TX - Red 7 - 4/7/2015
Such a good show, I think I actually enjoyed this show slightly more then Swans!
Marriage was up first, I guess I'd describe them as noise rock? At times there were 3 percussionists, or 2 bassists. Lots of normal everyday objects made their way into the sonic assault (metal pan lids, bells, anything you could hit and make noise). They basically just played one 20 minute song, and it kicked some ass. When they first started, wasn't too sure about them, but they quickly got into a groove. There were only ~30 people or so there for them, but everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Never heard of Horse Lords either, but they definitely impressed me enough to pick up their vinyl after the show. If you get a chance to see them, do it. Hunter Hunt-Hendrix (of Liturgy) was next to me enjoying Horse Lords, was kind of cool.
By the time Sannhet came on, the crowd had filled out a little bit, but still probably less then 150 people. They were great, I'd almost say Sannhet stole the show from Liturgy. The powerful sound those 3 make is impressive. I was front row for all the shows, right in front of the bassist for Sannhet (check my snaps). So close I almost got clocked in the face by his bass when he was rocking out! They played a short, but highly energetic 35 minute set. I love the sound the bassist gets out of his bass. He was explaining to some guy after the show that he's got some weird pickups in his bass. Some digital board that Moog produced back in the 70's. Don't know enough about guitars to really understand it, but the result was fantastic.
Liturgy took then took the stage and played an hour long set. Mostly new stuff of the Ark Work, but there were two older songs thrown in too. Some of the new stuff translates better live then others. I don't know if it was just being mixed poorly, but some of it got lost in the fuzz. Still a great set though, would definitely see them again. They closed with a solid version of Veins of God.
It was definitely a strange crowd that this bill brought to Red 7 too. Not a normal metal crowd by any stretch of the imagination. I swear there was one guy who was dancing just like the goth kids in South Park. Cracked me up, but I can't hate on him. He was in the music and feeling it Recognized one dude from Swans the night before too.
Very glad I sucked it up and went to the show. I'm paying for it today, and I'm going to crash hard once my shift is over. Totally worth it though, would have kicked myself if I missed it.

Sufjan was mind-blowing last night. Still processing it. Will post a full review soon. He did the ENTIRETY of Carrie and Lowell though.
I can't wait for tonight. Will also be my first time @ Academy of Music. Did they serve alcohol?
It was my first time at the venue too! Beautiful space with really fantastic sound. Yep, alcohol is served but prices are steep ($9 for a beer or glass of wine or mixed drink), and you can only bring it inside the theater in one of these special steel containers? Idk, I got one beer but at intermission (opener plays about 30 mins, then there is a 30 minute break, and he starts right at 9) so I didn't have to bother with getting the special glass to bring it in the theater.
Let me know what his set list is tomorrow. I will post what he did last night tomorrow, too, but don't want to ruin it for you in case he repeats (since last night was an added show that might very nearly duplicate tonight's).

Since no one is reading the festival thread, Alanna Royale just fucking wrecked Rhythm n Blooms. Go see her if she comes to your town. She'll be in Atlanta tomorrow.

Saw the Beach Boys a few nights ago, courtesy of a friend in the band that got me tickets. At one point, Henry Winkler, Carl Weathers, and John Stamos were all on stage as backup singers. It got saucy.
Papadosio and Human Experience tonight /right here live at tip-iTinaaaas [tm Corey Henry]. unfortunately they are not playing Waka or Bonnaroo so this might be my only shot to see them this year.
Edit - Human Experience was a dj and keyboard player from Los Angeles. He played a tune he said he wrote last time he was in town with Pete Murano from Orleans Ave called Jazz in My Bones or something. Then played some poppier shit but eventually broke into a cool remix of Riders on the Storm and then a Rising Apalacia tune.
Papadosio opened up playing mostly songs with vocals which I haven't really seen them do that many live before. It was good enough and certainly in parts great, but I want the instrumental and psychedelic more. About halfway through they busted into about a 30 minute find your cloud which went into something else and back. From that point on, the show was great straight through the encore. It was probably more of a rock tinged show than I have seen them play before as well.
Ran into a couple guys from Twiddle and one of the guitarists from Earphunk.
saw sufjan thursday night in cleveland and friday in columbus. it was the most beautiful show i've been to in a long time. the new material translated so well live, and even the sad older stuff seemed upbeat in comparison. i was pleasantly surprised by the visuals, such a good light show, and the videos playing behind him were really great. i'm glad that i ended up seeing it twice, so i could take it all in. so many feels.

Agreed with all of this I get to see him a second time too and am really excited to take it all in again. Wasn't the light show phenomenal? I wasn't expecting that.
Question: did he do pretty much the exact same show both nights or did he play a different collection of tracks from his older albums between the two nights?

he played john wayne gacy jr. in cleveland and futile devices in columbus. that was the only real difference. also, the blue buckets of gold ending was so unreal, even the second time.

He did Futile Devices?! Fuckkkkk hope he does that for the DC show; as much as I love John Wayne Gacy (one of my very favorite of his pre Age of Adz tracks) and was so excited that he played it at the Philly show I went to, I was holding out hope that he'd do Futile Devices and then he didn't.

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
modest mouse last night was awesome. what i saw of it... they started late (not until around 9:40, it was supposed to be 9) and i had to work at 11. i watched pretty much until the encore, then left to get to work, only to find that the guy i was rushing to relieve stayed here until 11:45 WORKING ON HOMEWORK. not happy. the crowd was pretty awful, drunk bros pushing, and a million people being taken out by security before the show even started. but aside from all of my whining right now, they sounded great!

Meh yeah the crowd at the show I attended wasn't great either. Not too pushy/fucked up but more so just kind of rude and didn't even seem that happy to be there. It is Modest fucking Mouse - look alive, fools.

I was at the modest mouse show too. Had a blast. Met some awesome friendly ppl. Also met one super bitch. I had so much fun though. It was one of the better live acts I've ever seen.

Sleater-Kinney played an amazing gig in Nashville last night. I didn't realize they are already over 30 shows into their reunion tour since they are booked for so few festivals but they aren't showing any signs of fatigue after nearly 3 months on the road.

Modest Mouse makes some pretty sad/depressing music, so that doesn't really surprise me.
