I went to see Hillbilly Casino, The Legendary Shack Shakers, and Rancid last night at Rocketown. No photos. They just about do a strip search to get into that place. (Run by a religious organization)
My review is not so much about the music, is was great, but about the audience.
Hillbilly Casino are a local band that are considered Rockabilly. They always give a good show and last night was no exception. The Legendary Shack Shakers are psychobilly, and I have wanted to see them for a long time. But alas, very few people were getting into the music. It has been said that Nashville is a tough town to play, and I can believe it. They like to stand there awkwardly with folded arms and watch the band. WTF?
There were a few in the front row giving it their all, and me and my friend on the back rail having a good time. I was next to what I will call the June Cleaver clone. I don't for the life of me know why she was there. She did not clap, bob her head, tap her foot, or appear to be having a good time at any point. I am dancin like a fool, making sure not to get into her SPACE. This seemed to offend her as well. So I kept it up. ;D
Finally, when I was truely in despair for Nashville's ability to enjoy music, the crowd formed a nice moshing zone, and dancing insued. Wild, crazy, smashing into each other dancing. June Cleaver did not approve.
But the most beautiful moment occured when JD Wilkes, the lead singer for the Shack Shakers, and a wild man of talent, whipped out his weiner and presented it to the crowd. June just about had a heart attack.
So the moral of the tale is this:
Ticket--- $20 Parking-- $5 T-shirt---$15 Water---$1.50(no booze, religious remember?) Watching June Cleaver Clone just about stroke out-priceless ;D
Update Alert! A Warrant for JD Wilkes's arrest as been issued by the Nashville Police.

Do you think she would have had the same reaction had it been the beaver instead. ;D
You don't sound excited enough for Lyle Lovett! C'mon Hilari, the man is one of the best living songwriters, and his Large Band will surely kick some ass live.
Lyle Lovett was last night, and you were so right that I wasn't excited enough! It was raining yesterday morning and we talked about not even going! But, the rain cleared up mid-afternoon, and we decided to go ahead and head out to Chastain . . . I am SO glad that we did! We had the best time.
Lyle and his Large Band played for about two hours (maybe a little more), and I could have stayed so much longer. They did a little bit of country (which I'm not normally a big fan of, but enjoyed very much), a little jazz, a little blues, and a little gospel. They even had special guest back-up singers from Atlanta on some of the songs. They played one very big-band song before he came out, and then his first song was "Church" which was the only one of his I used to really know, and so it holds a special place in my heart (plus, it's just funny!). Then, they stayed on a pretty mellow note for awhile, which worked really well because it was still light out. As the show went on and it got darker outside, it really built up until the last two songs which were up-tempo and fun as hell (that doesn't make any sense, hell wouldn't be fun . . . you get the idea anyway). He did two songs in the encore, one of which was "Boat" which Josh and I had been hoping to hear all night!
Also, he talked a good bit between songs, and he was really personable with the audience and funnier than I expected! He really comes across as a very likeable guy.
We even each got a t-shirt, which was funny because Josh is generally against wearing "band shirts" but it was such a great show, and they were such great shirts, that we couldn't help ourselves.

NothingButFlowers, if you ever decide to skip a show you've got tickets for, let me know. I live in the Atl. area and would love to take any off your hands.

I'll keep that in mind, but I wouldn't count on it. The only reason we really thought about skipping that one was because it was an outdoor show and it rained like crazy yesterday morning . . . and we really only bought the Lyle Lovett tickets so that we could get our Willie Nelson and David Byrne tickets earlier (and there is NO chance of us skipping either one of those shows . . . I'll sit outside naked in a snow storm to see David Byrne if I have to . . . now let's all pray it doesn't come to that). ;D

Steve Miller Band rocked it out at Jones Beach NY last night. Really good show. Joe Cocker opened and played well and Steve blew us all away. Played the hits and some old R&B tunes

Saw STS9/Umphrey's Last night in Cincy. Sound tribe brought the heat as usual...but Umph...man they are taking their stuff to a whole different level. I cant put my finger on exactly what they are though...jam/reggae/metal-rock sound????
Almost like ... Rush/Reggae/their own blend..?? idk but it rocks
it hasn't happened yet, but i'm sure the gov't mule show on august 9th in atlanta is gonna be awesome. perpetual groove and mike gordon are playing before them. then mule for about 3 hours. then a late night show with ivan neville's dumpstaphunk. should be a good time.

I saw Jimmie's Chicken Shack last night at Awful Arthurs. It was a really small place... they had to put the soundboard on a pool table, if that's any indication as to how much of a sh!t venue this was....
But regardless, Jimmie's Chicken Shack came out and they were having fun! After a few songs they requested all the bright lights be turned off on stage because "we're stoners, give us a break"
They played a set for about an hour, which consisted of 7 or 8 songs and atleast 10 "raise your drinks and put 'em down!"s Then they came over to the bar for half an hour, took some shots, bought a round for everyone in their vicinity (including me! ) and then went back on stage sloppy drunk and still had a blast. Overall it was one hell of a time, and totally worth the $10 to get in.
I went to the Public Enemy Show a couple weeks ago at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, it was amazing. The did the entire 1987 "It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" from start to finish and then did a greatest hits set. Believe it or not Flavour Flav is not as quacked up as he appear on that awful tv show and Chuck D is just incredible.
