Gov't Mule's Halloween show in Oakland was amazing. The second set and both encores were all Doors songs with Robbie Krieger of the Doors on guitar. Highlights included:
Break On Through (To The Other Side); People Are Strange; Hello, I Love You; Light My Fire with My Favorite Things Tease; Love Me Two Times; The End > Riders On The Storm; Roadhouse Blues
I've never been a huge fan of the Doors. But the Mule's interpretation of these songs was something to behold.
Debating going to see Space Ritual/Nik Turner's Hawkwind/whatever the fuck they're calling it tonight. Nik Turner and some other Hawkwind OG's playing early Hawkwind.
Seen Passion Pit tonight. Good show, amazing light show, and good energy. Not for sure how I feel about Michael Angelakos vocals, but he gives a lot to the crowd.
Kinda of odd that they played a day set at bonnaroo. Seemed like the kind of band that needed the light show to go with a night crowd.
Kurt Vile was pretty good last night. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't dead tired from raging NOLA 4 days straight and had my face melted off by The Cure the night before.
So, I had a date with this guy last night... magical show: just him, his guitars, a bottle of red wine, and a rose in his teeth.
The setlist included many earlier Decemberists tunes, and he previewed 3 new tracks. We even got the Crane Wife set as an encore. Soooo, sooo good!
Being 5' from my #1 music crush (*swoon*) made it a Top 5 show of all time. There are only 14 dates on this tour, so if Colin Meloy will be ANYWHERE near you, go see him!
*Edit: the venue had a strict no-photos policy...so much for taking pics with the good camera! At least I was able to snap a few phone pics to remember the night!
Given that I bought the tickets having only heard two of his songs, and bolstered by the Mercury Prize, I am extremely pleased with my rash choice to see James Blake. I knew from a little online research that most of his stuff sounds nothing like the radio friendly ones off of Overgrown, but not exactly what to expect. I obviously missed the lines giving out free Valium based on the crowd, but I still had fun.
The jam in Nothing Ever Happened pretty created an entire other song. From the pulsating, droney & maddening loud house music ( that they were clearly controlling to mess with everybody), to the very end of their 2 hour jamb session, and the hour long sound check they blasted into the street, Deerhunter took over that corner of Athens. As a music fan, the reason why I go out to shows is hopefully cross paths with something like last night. I thought I've seen Thee Oh Sees pull off the ultimate night of rock of roll, but Deerhunter just blew everything else away.
I'm glad you enjoyed your show. We walked past it a couple times to eat pizza at Little Italy. Too bad Georgia lost the way they did, or it would have been a perfect Athens night.

I wish I could have made it to both. what time did Deerhunter start? Since I saw Melvins at 40 Watt and then caught Killer Mike/GZA at Georgia Theatre, I have been wanting to pull off another double like that.

Deerhunter started at Midnight and went until about 2:20.
Melvins/Killer Mike&Gza is a hell of a double bill. My best double bill was a few weeks ago with Neutral Milk Hotel and then Disclosure.

damn I definitely could have made it to both if I had went ahead and got a Deerhunter ticket.
I don't mean to rub it in anymore, but I had an extra ticket.
my wife was with me.
The reason why I had an extra ticket is because I left my wife in the dust. No way is she going to keep me from Deerhunter. J/k, she actually had something to do at home and then went to Bonobo at the Fox.

she probably would have done it. I just wasn't sure how the times were going to work out.

Saw Toubab Krewe Saturday at a small venue here in Columbus. I could not pass up the chance to see them again. They bring back a lot of memories for me. As they are one of those bands I discovered at Bonnaroo years ago, by accident. I caught them several times playing in Knoxville after that. I found it odd they were playing such a small venue in Columbus, but the guitarist revealed that they have ties here, so maybe it was just out of "wanting" to play somewhere intimate. I have not heard a lot from them over the last few years, so maybe I m a wrong, this may be what they are playing these days. Their sound has changed a bit, a little more heavy on the traditional "jam" while incorporating the African (Mali) instruments used by the percussionist and the guy that plays the kora and kamelengoni. Still a great show, it was fun remembering all the past shows in Knoxville and the Bonnaroo performances. Check them out if you get a chance.
