I was thinking earlier today at work, there are a couple of really good local musicians around here that no one knows about. Small-time acts and acts just now getting some attention. Then I started thinking, there are plenty of other local musicians with alot of talent out there that not alot of people know about.
So I decided to make this thread; a place for everyone to share some of their favorite local musicians.
Artist: Cagney Guest
This guy graduated from my high school a couple of years before I did, and I discovered his myspace page a few months ago. Incredible voice, and I'm digging the whole 'grunge-grass' element.

There are tons and tons of great bands in the austin area, but these are a few i like...
The Hudsons - acoustic folk music with great harmonies and they even add in a violin. i'm friends with the two guys in the group, and they are great people to boot.
Russell Huie - indie/ambient/soul. this guy is a friend of mine, and so is his bassist. he is one of the MOST talented guitarists i've ever met. they're playing at SXSW this year here in austin.
There's one band from my hometown called The Weeks. They're pretty cool guys that i've indulged in the corn with on a few occasions and have a pretty good sound and really fun stage presence/show for a local band. Unfortunately they got a record deal and very rarely play live shows anymore, compared to the nearly weekly shows they used to play. They're mostly rock...ish.

There's a few so far that I've seen and love.
First off from my college town. I'm always posting about them but I love Headlights. They are a blast live and just put out a new album. Its getting good reviews and they've got a cool label (think Of Montreal and Mates of State) www.myspace.com/headlights
A Chicago band that I enjoy quite a bit is The 1900s. I'd put them in the same genre as Headlights. Lots of fun, male and female vocals. www.myspace.com/1900s
And lastly, Office. They are pretty straight forward rock. Good times. Fun songs. Also have a very small female vocalist. www.myspace.com/officemusic

Howe Gelb - www.myspace.com/howegelb whether solo or with his band Giant Sand, this guy really deserves to be heard. Calexico started out as members of Giant Sand, and M. Ward and Grandaddy both owe their careers to this man.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
Living in Austin, I have a few favs. Explosions in the Sky, Polyphonic Spree, Ghostland Observatory and Spoon get a lot of the glory, but groups like I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness and Tacks, the Boy Disaster are some of more underrated local acts on the scene right now. Bill Callahan and David Garza are a couple of Austin transplants that have made their presences felt the past couple of years...both are very different but well worth checking out.

Awesome bands, I thought Polyphonic was Dallas? But close enough.
Isn't Portugal the Man from Austin as well? They're great
Also, of course Lucero and the North MS Allstars. Also Scott Bomar's bands Impala and the Bo-Keys are both great. Freeworld are long-time "local legends" around here too, and Herman Green often sits in with them.

I've mentioned them on here before a long time ago, but Gifts From Enola is band that my friends started a few years ago. They're an instrumental rock/experimental band that put on a really good show. They're from Charlottesville, VA but 3/4 of the members attend college with me in Harrisonburg, VA so they play between those two locations frequently.
They're also doing another cross-country tour this summer after a successful run at it last year. If they're stopping by a place nearby I suggest you check them out... it'll be a cheap ticket, if nothing else
