Bad idea. They can ALWAYS find a way to, at the very least, inconvenience you. Big time. You can find yourself delayed by hours and hours and having to explain yourself to cops, sheriffs and maybe even a judge.
Do you honestly think a trooper, after you just refused his request to search your car, is simply going to say, "OK sir, no problem, you can go now and have a nice day."? Ain't gonna happen.
When you're pulled over, the last thing you should try to be is some sort of activist attorney. Be polite and cooperative. Nothing of positive value will come out of being the opposite.
And to the fellow who suggested being an unhelpful smart ass to the cops when you have "nothing to hide" is awful advice as well. They will certainly find something to ruin your trip.
My advice for all you young whipper snappers who harbor resentment for "the man" is to knock that chip off your shoulder when dealing with cops who have just stopped you for a possible violation. They're not interested in your BS and don't play games. Remember, your actions have consequences, good or bad, ALL the time.
If you're really concerned about evaporating civil liberties and/or police abuse, write your congressman, organize rallies, get involved, etc.
Just don't act like a schmuck when you get pulled over.
I never said to act like a jerk to the cops. thats always a dumb idea. however being pulled over because you look a certain way is a violation of your civil rights. it is possible to be polite and cooperative while still saying no. www.flexyourrights.org/traffic_stop_scenario

Hmmm I'm not so sure it's being a schmuck when you are simply exercising your right not to be illegally searched.
I have had this happen to me before. I was pulled over, with absolutely nothing in my car, and the officer asked me if he could search the vehicle. At no time was I rude or condescending. I simply stated that I would not consent to a search. He asked me what I was trying to hide, and I said “Nothing, but you have no reason to search my vehicle.” He then wrote me a ticket for speeding and let me go on my way.
You should NEVER consent to an unprovoked search of your vehicle. Unless “probable cause” is established, an officer MUST retain your consent to search you. At the very least this gives your attorney the additional argument of requiring the police to establish probable cause in court, if you are in fact arrested. State simply and confidently “I will not consent to a search of my vehicle” and repeat it as many times as necessary. The officer then has the option of letting you go, or making you wait until he can retain a warrant and search your vehicle (which he was going to do anyway.) However, NOW he must weigh the option of making you wait on the side of the road, with the possibility that there really is nothing in the car and risk a harassment lawsuit against the police department as well as him individually.
Stated simply, ALWAYS remain respectful and polite, but do not allow yourself to be intimidated. There are elements a conviction of possession must meet, and if you find yourself in that situation, you should allow yourself as many outs as possible.
For sure a bad idea! I live in a neighboring county and actually for a member of law enforcement at his personal business.....they always talk about how much "stuff" they get every year (nothing illegal of course as there are no illegal activities to be doing at the roo) but the dead giveaway is the writing....then they look for out of state tags and the camping gear....as horrible as it is to say these cats around here are looking to get your vehicle!! Got 2 last year....
so I "accidently" left the coffee county tag on my car cause that is the county I bought my van in. Now not only do I have TN tags but coffee county tags to so I look....well the van looks real damn local...
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
yeah i have the usual...a love one another sticker...a steal your face...and oh i have the last years sticker and one of the big red end war stickers from last year so i beg for it anyway or at least people say that! but i wouldn't write on my car that i am on my way to the biggest party of the year and i am stocked for it! and beware TN state troopers are....well not so open minded shall we say....

I just prefer to completely avoid the cops if possible so I don't do anything to provoke a pull over. Not that I have anything to hide but I just feel its such an inconvenience to be stopped and go through the usual set of questions.
