at woodstock, so after a day with 200,000+ people packed in a particular area with limp bizkit, RAGE, and metallica finishing off the day, its metallica's fault that theres a blanket of garbage on the ground??? i dont think ive ever heard such ignorance in my life.
are you freakin serious?
so i guess its metallica's fault too that people set stuff on fire sunday night during the Chili Peppers???

One band can't ruin Bonnaroo, one band's fans can ruin other attendees good times but that's about it. Hasn't Metallica played a lot of euro festivals over the last few years? Do those fests still exist?
I saw the set via webcast, and to be honest I wasn't all that impressed. Hamett was dead on, and ripped my face off with his solos and all but Hetfield just seemed to annoy me with his "stage talk" and referring to the band in third person and all. It was just weird imo. Then again, I'm not a big Metallica fan.
Am I in the minority here, or did anyone else catch the same vibe from the set?

For some bands, that's their thing--the third person deal. If their fans don't seem to mind then whatever. That was a positive in my opinion, because despite the talking in third person, it looked like Metallica was sincerely wanting the crowd to have an amazing time and helping them along their way--not calling them 80,000 Tennesseans and leaving their set early (lol).
If there is any Vibe criticism, it would be during Creeping Death--the "die" chanting. I felt strange when that happened, but I stopped myself from taking it too seriously. The negativity didn't extend outside of the bounds of the song.

Metallica fucking rocked. They were far better than I expected, and I'd already seen them 4 times before. Nobody got hurt, no tents got napalmed, they earned lots of respect last night. Tue though, James was being a little too polite to the audience, which I thought was a little strange.
I have been thinking a lot recently about Metallica's dispute with napster.
That killed the band to me.
If I were an established recording entity (or a minor one, at that), I would be HANDING out my music to the masses. Music should be free.
Most bands make money through live shows and merchandising anyway, and I am always happy to pay for a good concert and a shirt.
I'm not a metal fan, but you have to hand it to them--- A few of their older albums are suprisingly great and have the same youthful rocking feel as early Misfits stuff. Shallow, over-the-top and melodramatic... but in an endearing way.

as a non metallica fan, i could see how a metallica fan would go nuts for this. you could tell how much fun they were having on stage, and they sounded great (for metallica ).
metallica came out and absolutely ripped it up. they definetly sound prime! i agree that it was probably the wrong place for them as the crowd wasn't as into it as most headliners. the sing-alongs were very quiet! but i will give metallica credit where credit is due. they were pretty awesome.

i watched the webcast and it showed the crowd upfront, and ive never seen a crowd more fired up - obviously this was the mega metallica fans, but it looked insanely exciting from the webcast ;D

I have never really listened to Metallica before, and never considered going to a concert of theirs. However at Roo they were INCREDIBLE. The energy in the crowd, the band getting into it, every was amazing. Did anyone catch when they blew the fucking PA, kept playing, and when it cut back on they hadn't missed a beat? Metallica helped make Roo this year.
"One" intro did it for me. Pyro and fireworks with the machine-gun intro.......So good. I was VERY impressed. Everyone at Roo seemed to enjoy it too. Well-done.

well the article was right they did kill bonnaroo, as in they played their asses off. they were absolutely amazing. i used to like Metallica, but havent been into them at all lately. i was half thinking about skipping the set, but after Chris Rock ended i decided id sit around and see how they were. after the first few songs i started getting into it and so did the entire crowd around me. they put on a great performance and i was glad i gave them a chance. they were one of the highlights of my weekend.

Wow- I think after Metallica played an amazing set, LOVED being at Roo, showed love to those seeing Metallica for the first time, and having the entire What Stage covered in chanting Rooer's engrossed in the show- Not to mention the festival going on Saturday and Sunday with no looting, raging fires, or muggings... That this post is absolute rubbish. Long live Metallica, and Long live Bonnaroo!
Not a Metallica fan and I expected to hate it, but I absolutely loved it. They were fucking great. I retract any negative statement I ever made about them playing Bonnaroo
As a Metallica fan I thought it was a perfect Bonnaroo show. They held back on the sing-alongs which I thought was smart (they do huge sing-along things usually, and it can actually get a little tedious). I hope the Roo attendees appreciate that they got to see Metallica play some songs that they almost never play, like Ride the Lightning and So What.
I thought it was kickass that Kirk jammed with MMJ later. I really like that he went out and got into to Bonnaroo.

Metallica was one of the, if not THE, best set of Roo.
They were very positive, crowd-catering, and relaxed.
I didn't hear ONE bad thing about them the whole weekend, so it seemed like only people on here complained about it.
Oh, and did I say that their show was one of the best of the weekend?
I heard tons of negative things about Metallica's set. Being positive and relaxed is awesome, but be good at performing too. They're pretty sloppy live. It was fun but not musically mindblowing.
Didn't notice being too sloppy, actually at all... and I really didn't hear anything negative of Metallica, seriously. That's something else, and I talked to allot of different people with different tastes.
I actually heard more negativity towards Pearl Jam, believe it or not.
