Didn't notice being too sloppy, actually at all... and I really didn't hear anything negative of Metallica, seriously. That's something else, and I talked to allot of different people with different tastes.
I actually heard more negativity towards Pearl Jam, believe it or not.
me 2, I've been hearing a lot of good thing bout metallica from a lot of non metallica fans and I've been hearing not bad but boring reviews from life long PJ fans.
personally tho, I'm just happy that the biscuits raged everyones faces down to the bones.
Metallica was one of the, if not THE, best set of Roo.
They were very positive, crowd-catering, and relaxed.
I didn't hear ONE bad thing about them the whole weekend, so it seemed like only people on here complained about it.
Oh, and did I say that their show was one of the best of the weekend?
I heard tons of negative things about Metallica's set. Being positive and relaxed is awesome, but be good at performing too. They're pretty sloppy live. It was fun but not musically mindblowing.
You are the only person who seemed to find them sloppy. Seriously, one of the tightest bands I've ever seen live, stop being so persnickety, please.

As a life-long metallica fan, I can honestly say that they truly delivered. I do agree that they are showing their age a bit, namely lars. I heard some timing issues, but it wasnt enough to derail the show.
How bout the racks of lights on the back wall for the metallica show? I counted them and came up with 10 rows of 42 lights each... for a grand total of 420 lights.

Im really not sure what you are listening to then. Its not nitpicking to want to hear a band not screw up. You should have been in the Zappa Plays Zappa show to hear with a tight group sounds like.

metallica tends to try new/different things with their music when they play live, especially kirk hammett who tends to improvise parts of his solos.
The result is songs that in the core sound much like their album counterparts but with extra things added to songs if you listen closely, but when improv comes into play, theres always the chance of the sloppy mistake
But everyone is entitled to their opinion. I agree some of the drumming was a bit sloppy at times but, believe you me, it has gotten better

I personally think the Metallica performance was in the top 5 of the weekend. You could actually tell that they were nervous at times (they know this is not their typical crowd), excited (as excited as some of the smaller bands to be there), and that even though it is Metallica they stayed true to the roo spirit. They rocked the faces off of whoever was in the crowd, and I personally did not hear a bad thing about their set all weekend by anyone.
^^dopeshow...if they do not have the talent to improvise, then why would they invite a member of Metallica to not only play in the Superjam, but also play with a band who is going to be a headliner either next year or in 2010. Trust me I was skeptical about Metallica playing but when I really thought about it, there was no better place for me to ever see a band like that around the crowd of bonnaroo. Which in general is a very smart crowd that gives respect for bands that bring it all. I will agree with you that Zappa Plays Zappa did bring it and I hope to get to see them again soon.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
First off, if you're playing the Bonnaroo drinking game at home, James Hetfield just got you drunk with his inability to not say the word Bonnaroo every ten seconds.
Also, from what i could tell nobody was talking about Metallica's effect on vibes after Kanye's disaster. Lars should send Kanye a check.
It was what it was. I saw more hippies who knew the words to old Metallica songs than I EVER thought I'd see.

I have to say this one thing: I was in the Pit for the Pearl Jam show and while waiting all day, the security people we talking to us a little bit about what it was like for Metallica the previous night. They told us that they were required to have 3 times the number of security people because of the fact that 4 security guards had knifes pulled on them when they tried pull passed out people out of the crowd. 1 of the security guards was actually cut and got a few stitches because of it. Now everyone can say what they want about the show and the vibes and the hippies that knew the words of old Metallica songs, but the simple fact that there were people who brought knifes into the Pit and felt it necessary to not only threaten security with them, but to actually cut someone who was trying to pull a passed out/injured person, out of the Pit shows the kind of people that many of us were concerned about attending the festival.
That being said, I don't feel that the rest of the weekend was affected by these people, but the crazy meatheads where there.

Very true, we can all say what we want. That sucks if it is all true (even part of it). That type of aggression is completely unwelcome. But I'll try not to stereotype any more than a death at previous Roo's means everyone's on acid and coke. This year no festival-goer died - does that mean Metallica made it safer? No. Correlation does not equal causation.
I didn't see much of their set but Metallica was fine just not my style I hung out waiting for MMJ. They certainly did not ruin Roo nor did their fans, in fact two of the coolest guys I met the whole time was in line for the pit for the Raconteurs. They were waiting for Metallica and were really cool. I am sure anyone who liked that music would have loved it and they certainly did not detract from from Roo08. I would say over all they added to the experince expeccially Kirk at MMJ.
