So I couldn't go to Roo this year since I am going to Glastonbury (no worries here) but I did watch the blue room sets on Friday night and I want to know what you all thought of Metallica. The broadcast rarely did show the crowd and when they did, it was pretty much only the first couple of rows (obvious die hards). The sound from the broadcast was ok. It seemed as though they were really trying to get the crowd into the show.
Were the majority of people there into it or just there because there was no one else playing. I have been a huge Metallica fan for over 15 years now and have seen them at least 12 times.
I expected to hate them, but they kicked ass. It was a great show. They played betwen 2 and 2 1/2 hours. The setlist is in the setlist thread. They seemed really appreciative of the crowd, which turned out to be one of the best crowds of the weekend, imo. They lit off a few fireworks on the sides of the stage

The sound was great - my husband is a sound guy so he is very particular about how bands sound and he didn't once complain about theirs (apart from when they blew a speaker at the end!).
I really felt like the whole crowd was very into the show. The band looked like they were having a blast and that, I think really reflected on the audience. I think many people were pleasantly surprised which makes me happy
They put on an amazing show - - I have always wanted to see them live but am not really a huge fan. I think overall their show was a big success.

I think it was just bad internet sound that I was getting, I'm not referring to their actual sound live. But the mix of band vs crowd was not good. I like to hear the crowd chanting and going crazy. I'm really happy to hear that people enjoyed their set. I was baked on the couch wondering if the band I worshiped growing up were washed up. Glad to hear they aren't

the music was incredible, good song selection james hetfield trying to get the crowd into anymore than they were was kind of embarrassing and annoying. i was far back so maybe it was cooler if you were closer but from the back it seemed like it would be better to just keep playing to get us into it.
My best friend came with me and my brother this year and he has always given me and my bro shit for liking Metallica. He thought the show was amazing and that says a lot coming from a guy who has always disliked them

Dude! I vaguely remember telling you at one point to just give them a chance in the rare case that you'd be surprise. I'm not saying this in the "i told ya so" fashion, but rather the "I'm glad you gave them a chance" because they seem to have been phenomenal. Karma to you, for branching outside of your typical taste in music!

Metallica was soo good it was scary. I wasn't expecting much but they totally blew me away. They seemed like they really enjoyed it and the way they embraced the whole bonnaroo experience was pretty incredible.
It was a very fun show and nostalgic for me but it was far from musically rewarding(the way something like the Bluegrass Allstars were). So i guess it was like any oldies act/classic rock show.

Metallica r0ck3d !! It was absolutely the best What stage performance I heard from the grounds of th Which stage all weekend! Even if it was the only one since I was left of and slightly forward of the soundboard for PJ. Lol. Seriously how was it? I would like to see a vid, but first I must crash.
I went down to this show with a girl who not only did not want to see Metallica, but was worried about how the crowd would be for the show. I was on the fence as to whether or not to see them at all myself. We were blown away. It was one of the best shows I saw all weekend and everyone around us was having the time of their lives.
^I didn't notice anything... was it like note flubs or tech stuff?
Kirk's solo on RTL was very out of time, AJFA went totally off at one point and the 3/4 section in One was botched to the point of Lars just having to play by himself for a few measures to get the band back on track.
I'd been waiting 20 years to see Metallica, and I couldn't have been happier. I'm not a big fan of Memory Remains, but everything else was fine with me. The fireworks during the last big climax in Enter Sandman were hot poop! I wish the encore had been longer, I could have gone for another song off Master of Puppets. I had an amazing time and I thought they were by far the best headliner. I'm a big Pearl Jam fan as well, and their show was weak by comparison.
They were awesome. James Hatfield got pretty cheesy with his crowd interactions - a lot of "Metallica loves you!" but then they knew they weren't facing their target audience and needed to win fans back after the past couple albums so I understood it, although still laughed at it.
But they sounded great and looked like they were having a lot of fun. They so put in 100% into the show.

Pretty Huge Metallica fan, 5th time that I had seen them. The only disappointment with their set was the blown speaker and it could have been longer. Other shows I have been to have been close to 2 hrs and 15 - 30 minutes. However, with that being said that put the best show that I have seen them put on. They really focused on the classic material, and the new(ish) song that they played Memory Remains was good. The songs from the Black Album that have been somewhat played out sounded great and it really surprised me how much I enjoyed hearing Sad But True. Overall they sounded incredibly tight and it was great to here songs that I had not played live in 4 previous shows (PTL, Unforgiven, AJFA, and No Remorse). On stage they looked incredibly happy and excited, and the stage was much smaller than there normal stages, so it was cool to see them jamming together and not a four different corners of the stage by themselves. Overall a wonderful show, and Bonnaroo was a wonderful experience (1st timer and definately will return). Also, James' cheesy crowd interactions were on par for all of the Metallica shows, he has been doing the same stuff since the Justice Tour.
I got down pretty close. The crowd was really cool. I met a few Metallica fans at their first Bonnaroo that were having a blast. Not surprisingly, it was a total sausage fest. Here are a few of my pics.
Get show I had to eat 3 excedrian migraine pills the next morning because my neck hurt so bad.
I think the reason why hetfield was talking so much was because all the talk before roo about them being downfall of roo and how they were gonna ruin it, he was just making sure they were doing there job alright and letting everyone else know they was too.
