inforooster collectively have great taste in music (duh!). and i'm sure there's at least one band that you listen to that no one's ever heard of... let's hear about your favorite (unknown) band.
mine would be Mew. their album "and the glass handed kites" is a classic in my eyes. i love the seamlessness of it... one song leads into the next.

Galaxie 500, especially their album On Fire. Great spaced-out guitar wailing. I don't know if that's too mainstream or not, but I haven't met many people who've actually listened to them.

hard to narrow down to one, but I guess the most obscure plus being one of the greatest bands of all time would equal Jellyfish. Classic power pop band from the early 90's. They released two albums, one totally awesome and the other utterly divine. With the songwriting team of Andy Sturmer (now a professional songwriter and producer, best known for his work with Puffy AmiYumi) and Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (worked with Jon Brion, Beck, Air, and was one half of The Moog Cookbook), their music sounded like the idiot savant lovechild of The Beatles and Queen.
Go listen to their sophomore album Spilt Milk. Then you can die happy.
Also, this is a band that is not really that obscure of unpopular... to the contrary, they are one of the most influential bands of the last 50 years. However, many casual music fans do not know of this band.
Bands everywhere from Radiohead to Nine Inch Nails to The Fall to Brian Eno site them as a key influence.
I recommend that everyone check out a band called Ghostwood. I'm a little biased, since three of the four members are friends of mine, but they are becoming very prominent in the indie scene. They're signed to Modular Records and they just did a tour of Europe in support of The Jesus and Mary Chain.

I'm sure alot of people already know about this but everyone should check out some of Charles Manson's recordings, old (before all the crazy stuff happened) and new (recorded on tape recorder in his cell in like '05 or something). I mean the guy did some pretty unforgivable things but he sure could write a good song. "Home is Where You're Happy" is my personal favorite.
Check out their new demo "Chances" and my favorite song from their last record "Slow Down." Be warned, if you fear keyboards, booty-shakin' jams, and danceable grooves then...well fuck what's wrong with you?!
