The average person can work between 15-20 hours. A lucky few work less or not at all. Yes, shifts are divided into three six-hour ones. Not everyone who applies gets a position. They are divided into pre-fest, during-fest and POD. Pre-fest spots go quick, PODS can last until a few weeks prior to Roo.

^^^
if i had a during-festival position and had to volunteer 18 hours in three 6-hour shifts, i agree that would probably be too steep. that's close to 1/3 of my waking hours at bonnaroo.
however, since i live so close to manchester, if i could get any sort of a pre-festival volunteer position, i'd absolutely for sure do it.
i don't suppose you're assigned your position before you have to make your deposit?

^^^ see thats what i was wondering, id come down a day or 2 early to help but being 1,003 miles from the campground makes it a little harder for me to decide what i should do

You apply for pre-fest, during-fest, or POD. The pre-fest slots fill up quickly as it is a benefit to do all your work beforehand and then stay for the festival with no concern about having to work during your favorite act. You also get first pick for a sweet spot in the volunteer campground.
For during-fest, you are given your shift times at check-in on Wed. It's only when you report for your shift that you will find out exactly what your job entails.

You won't know what your job is until you get there.
Some people work 3 shifts, some people work 2. Everybody I camped around only wound up working 2, including myself and my boyfriend. In fact, we only wound up working about 10 hours total, 6 on Thursday and 4 on Friday, and I didn't miss anything I wanted to see.
I suppose you could just forfeit your deposit if you go there and you have a crappy shift. It's not as horrible as it sounds though.
I thought about doing pre-fest, but the shifts are longer (10 hours) and the work is harder, apparently.

I had a buddy 2 years back that volunteered and didn't have to work at all. One of the lucky few who manages to slip through the cracks.. I also volunteered and ended up only having to work ticket-taking at the front.. it was cool seeing how jacked everybody was to be handing their tickets over..
i highly recommend trying to volunteer.. it was cool

That was my next question, im going for it, it'll be nice to know I helped and also gained a ticket for it also, cant really beat that
^^ Me too, I am seriously thinking about it but I think I would only like to work pre-fest. I would hate to miss something really good and I also would want to work the same time as my husband.

I am under the assumption if you work pre-fest you can go ahead and set up camp on the farm in the volunteer section...but since I rarely know what I'm talking about I could be wrong.

Perhaps some folks who worked pre-fest last year can chime in but I believe you arrive on Sunday and work Monday through Wednesday. During-fest volunteers arrive Wednesday morning. When I arrived at the volunteer campground around 10am on Wednesday there must have been roughly 30 campsites already setup by pre-fest volunteers. It wouldn't surprise me if there are far fewer pre-fest volunteers needed than during-fest.

pre-fest workers arrive sunday, and thus presumably would work monday-wednesday. it seems that you would have to work more hours than the during-fest volunteers, but to me it would be worth it to ensure that i not miss a minute of roo.
it would mean that i'd have to schedule 8 days for bonnaroo, but hell, this is my one big vacation for the year. it would be a cool experience and put an extra $250 in my pocket. i'll seriously consider applying for pre-fest.

I also consider it my big vacation so I think 8 days would be cool. I have vacation time at my job and my husband is self employeed so we could probably take an 8 day vacation.

Also, for those thinking of volunteering pre-fest: keep in mind that when you apply, you choose what you would like, but preference is given to people who have volunteered before. Because so many people apply to volunteer pre-fest, it fills up VERY quickly.
I assure you, volunteering during-fest is not that bad. I didn't miss ANY shows I wanted to see.
im going to try and request my during fest positions this year. The one i did last year was grrrrrrrreat!!! Im going to try and do it early thursday and early friday. We'll see how that goes
If you apply for POD, you can tell the coordinators your two favorite bands and they'll typically schedule you around when the artists play. That's what it was like for me last year and I managed to not be given a Saturday night shift. Do they do that for during-festival vols, bamadancer?

What was your position? I got in for pre fest this year but switched because I didn't have a way down there (maybe that's why I ended up cleaning sweaty headsets =)...I'd love to know of some good positions to request!
What perks are involved with being a volunteer? (besides the free ticket)
I read that volunteers get free showers... im sold Closer to centeroo? A free meal?
just wondering, i dont need perks but they sure are nice
Definitely NOT closer to Centeroo. It was about a 15 minute walk IF you were able to cut across the field in front of the What Stage. The hike was about 25 min if you had to go around VIP camping and go through the main entrance.
Free meals - you are given a number of tokens ( I got 5 ) that are good for certain items from participating vendors. Sometimes you had to add a $1 for a better menu item. Not a complete meal for free but certainly a money saver if used wisely.

Nice, the ticket alone is well worth it, thanks for the info. I felt like it was literally a half hour walk everytime I wanted to go back to my tent so im down for wherever, it cant be any worse.
I was a POD volunteer last year... It wasnt that bad, just sit at a tent for a 6 hour shift, answer some questions, and direct the efffd up ones to the medics at the same tent... kinda interesting to say the least, saw some people having some really good/bad (depending on how you look at it) times and sat there the whole time NOT drinking or smoking *wink wink* the only thing i missed was metallica and plant and krause... and i actually requested the metallica shift...
i think i am going to look more into during fest this year though, i think it could be way cooler, or it could be way worse than the POD was.. either way i think being a vol. is def the way to go...

I was during fest last year and am REALLY hoping for a pre-fest gig this year. I love the idea of doing manual labor, getting it out of the way, and then being able to enjoy the rest of the fest work free.
Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before. Watchin' a crowd roll in. Out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones I've never felt before...
