I see a lot of threads about albums released in 2008, but I'm curious what are peoples greatest finds of 2008. For me it was probably The Avett Brothers catalog. Also probably my new found interest in electronic music in general. So what are some bands or albums you have discovered this past year that you fell in love with?
My suggestions would be: Mignonette Four Thieves Gone Both by The Avett Brothers^
And then "A Funky Thide of Sings" by Billy Cobham.
The Vivian Girls - Self titled. That record has been non stop for me. Imagine The early Dirtbombs records if the were influenced by The Supremes (or 60's girl groups in general) and Nirvana. Just when I was ready to give up on rock and roll.
Led Zep (was always a casual fan, but I really began to explore their whole catalog this year, and found I loved them). Bob Marley (ditto) My Morning Jacket (once again, ditto) Gogol Bordello Umphrey's McGee The Allman Brothers Band The New York Dolls Sonic Youth

^^^ Don't miss the Dolls if they come your way
I also discovered Keller, Umphrey's, and Cornmeal this year, and gained a much bigger appreciation for the complete discography of Chris Cornell's career... and actually... LOTS of other great things in 2008~ musically, it's been a helluva year
This year, I've gotten into WSP alot more (always been on the fence about them, but after seeing them again at AllGood i really started listening to their stuff) Also some older kickass country, some Waylon Jennings, Hank Wililams (And Hank III after those drunken nights out on the town raisin hell)

The Avett Brothers and Band of Horses. Saw both of them at Monolith at Red Rocks. Already knew about BoH, but got much more into them this year, and had drinks with them at Denver airport on my way home from Monolith.
The Avett Brothers was one of those, 'I am going to see them in concert, so I should find out what they are all about' deals, so I checked them out for a couple months prior to the show. By the time I arrived in Denver, they were near the top of my must see list. They just make some amazing music, with incredible lyrics and killer songs too. Just a big ball of alt-country fun.

My greatest find of 2008 has to be the 2001 album The People's Choice Music by David Soldier with Komar & Melamid. It features two tracks, "The Most Wanted Song" and "The Most Unwanted Song", respectively composed based on statistical findings of average Americans. I actually made a post about it, here. And if you go to that thread you'll find a link to another website where you can download the album for free (and legally). I can't recommend doing so enough!
Other great finds: The Knife Cannonball Adderley Peter Brötzmann Maja Ratkje, Shining, Supersilent and generally the whole Rune Grammafon label Lyle Lovett (already a mild fan, but more fully discovered how awesome a songwriter he is) NOMO The Fiery Furnaces Nico Muhly Lightning Bolt Dosh Jaga Jazzist Ratatat Clara Rockmore Florence Foster Jenkins Roy Orbison Goldfrapp Steinski Philip Glass

Definitely has to be Titus Andronicus. If you like anthemic, uplifting punk rock numbers about the end of the world, pick up a copy of The Airing of Grievances.
all of the bands mentioned in here are incredible (atleast... from the ones that I've heard that is)
I think my greatest find of 08 has to go to The Moondoggies. What a fantastic album this is...
amazing album here, this year was definitely an amazing year of discovery for me!
sts9, the new deal, the disco biscuits, band of horses, gogol bordello, the moondoggies, cold war kids, lotus, infected mushroom, and this was the year of phish for me...im a phish newb and deeply into their live shows...
"Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us." — Charles Bukowski

My biggest one was re-discovering Pearl Jam.
I always liked them but never had heard much more than their radio hits. I started listening to their live shows before Roo and became totally hooked on them. Then seeing them at Roo really did it for me - what an amazing show and an amazing band.
