Watched Marie Antoinette and Dogfight this weekend.
Marie Antoinette is a curiosity. A movie that completely skips over the important bits of Antoinette's life and focuses solely on the frivolity. I think Coppola was definitely interested in a certain aspect of her life and was maybe trying to draw parallels between her and modern starlets. The soundtrack is neither detracts nor adds to the movie. The performances are kind of half baked because the script is kind of half baked. It just sort of feels like a totally wasted opportunity.
In her previous features, Coppola proved to be rather adept at capturing fleeting moments of time and the mystery those moments encompass. Here she's trying to capture an entire life, and the results aren't nearly as successful. Perhaps if she had focused on only certain periods of time or a certain period of time, I think she might have been more successful.
If you haven't seen Dogfight, seek it out. It's a beautiful little romantic comedy starring River Phoenix and Lili Taylor about a marine on a night before he leaves for Vietnam. The movie probably could have used an extra 5 or 10 minutes to fill in some gaps in the last third, but it does a great job of capturing two young people at a moment in time falling for each other. If you want to make it a double feature night, pair this with The Last Detail and thank me later.
The Last Detail is one of my all time favorite movies. Along with Five Easy Pieces and One Flew Over..., this is among the strongest performance of Nicholson's 70s career.

That's a bold statement to rank it above his portrayal of Jake Gittes in Chinatown.
finally saw The Wrestler last night. having seen Milk as well, its hard to say who will get the oscar. I think Mickey Rourke really deserves this one, but knowing the academy i think theyll give it to Penn. its interesting though this is the first year in awhile that Best Actor hasnt been a total dead giveaway.

Has anybody seen Synecdoche, New York? It's Charlie Kaufman's latest, and the first movie he has directed. We watched it last night, and I'm not sure what to make of it. I think that I liked it, but there was so much going on, and it was so surreal in parts, that I'm going to have to watch it at least one more time before I am going to be able to really have an opinion on it.

So I saw 17 Again last night. Starring the one and only Zac Efron. I don't think anyone here was planning on seeing this movie, but if you were, I would advise against it. I did fall asleep for 30 minutes in the middle so if there were any good parts that's when they occurred. It was very predictable and seems like its been done a thousand times before. So I expect it to be a big box office hit. The only plus to this movie was Jim Gaffigan and he didn't have a big or funny part so his talent was wasted.
also... as of today slumdog got bumped to my 2nd favorite film of 2008. i had the extreme pleasure of seeing Let The Right One in today and i have to say i was stunned at how great it was. best horror film ive seen in a loooooong time, if you can even really call it a horror film.
I LOVE Let the Right One In!!! I've only met two other people who have seen it....I probably should get out more
But isn't it the most amazing...bizarre movie you've seen in a long time?
I wanted you guys to know that I rented "Let the Right One In" because of this conversation
I'm not in to scary movies, but the guy I'm seeing is so I figured I'd give it a shot. And I really, really liked it and so did the fella. Wasn't even scary, but creepy instead. The best film I've seen in a while. It was dubbed, which gave it a comedic element until we got used to it. I think I would have preferred subtitles. Either way, I highly suggest it!

I mean no offense, but I've got to ask: Why did you go see that? When I see the ads, all I can think about is George Burns and how that movie was awful when they made it 20 years ago.
Caught The Spirit this weekend. I wasn't familiar with the graphic novel, so I didn't know what to expect. I found it wierd in a good way, and also quite funny.

i would actually advise against seeing Let the Right One In on dvd until they release an import of it. The dvd thats out now has different subtitles than the theatrical release. apparently the distributors didnt want to pay top dollar for original subtitles so they paid some dumbarse to do it for cheap and it IS different. if you enjoyed it thats cool, but i'd still wait for an import dvd to be released.
I'm currently checking out the doc on Anvil... I've heard just way too many great things, I had to see it.
That's playing here at our independent theater, The Belcourt. I've also heard good things about it. This weekend they actually had Anvil come out and play after the movie.
micheal moore is a disgarce to the real dedicated leftists amongst us!....he bendss tha truth, knowingly misleads his folloaers and flatout lies whnever it suits him! i proudly stand way to left of his MAJOR MOTION PICTURES....but i'm am disgusted by tha way he cuts corners to make his job easier and his viewpoint moer accessible to tha larger complacent ticket buying public! he makes my ass puke! his antics...no matter how well intintioned....only give the rightwing pundits and activistists ammuniton! hes the real left's biggest enemy!

Bumpin' this.
I just watched Spirited Away this morning, and I now see what all the hype about Hayao Miyazaki is all about. The animation is freakin' incredible. Vibrant and full of beautiful imagery. This is actually the first anime I've ever sat through but I definitely plan on watching all of his films. I will say this, I can't imagine ever watching that as a child. It would scare the ever-living shiz out of me.

Ponyo is really good as well, however Totoro is probably his best one.

Cool, I got my hands on quite of few of them so I'll probably watch those two next. I really need to devote more time to watching movies, I used to watch tons of them but I just use all of my spare time listening to music these days. Morning movies FTW.
