I saw it and I liked it, but I thought the movie was overly simple and in general a decent piece of fluff that skirts the issues that are supposed to be at the heart of the characters by making them overly one dimensional.

Exactly. Nobody hates it, but for a movie that is nominated in every single major category, there is not the amount of gushing reviews you would expect.
I have that at home from Netflix right now. Looking forward to watching it this weekend. Then I just need to catch Django, Life of Pi and Lincoln to round them out.
Also I really think they screwed John Hawkes for The Sessions. He was superb. Definitely better than Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper.

Silver Linings is a romantic comedy the way that The Fighter is a boxing movie. It's got Russell's fingerprints everywhere, so it's definitely worth seeing if you like the rest of his work. Compared to the other Best Picture nominees, I'd say it's better than Argo, Lincoln, Life of Pi, and Beasts. I still haven't seen ZDT (tomorrow night) or Amour (whenever it opens within 60 miles of me).
So happy that Beasts of the Southern Wild got Best Picture and Director. Probably my no. 1 film of the year.
Since Lincoln's only real competition was Argo and ZDT, I think these nominations almost surely guarantee a third trophy for Spielberg in the Director's category.
The reason some of these nominations are so obscure is because this is one of the rare years that ballots were in before many of the guilds released their nominees, (mainly the DGA), and the fact that the Globes haven't aired yet. I like it better this way.
My prediction is that Lincoln cleans house giving Spielberg and Day-Lewis their third wins, with only Anne Hathaway beating Sally Field. I'm thinking Jennifer Lawrence will win Best Actress (but how awesome is it Quvenzhane Wallis is nominated?).
Intriguing, strong list of nominees. I need to get to work on seeing Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, Flight, Life Of Pi, and The Sessions at least.
As for Best Actor, I think it may be time for DDL to get his third, but I think it's equally possible Hugh Jackman gets it. I really thought Jackman was in a league of his own with this one, and it's not often that you see men get recognized for this type of performance in this type of film... far and away the best thing about Les Mis and the one thing that really kept me interested in the movie, he is owed a lot of credit for this performance. I think DDL will get it, if not then Jackman, but if I had my picking it would be Phoenix.
I was looking forward to Silver Linings for months, to be honest. And I agree that I'm a little shocked it's cleaning house in the nominations like that. I agree with chico and Dave it's a good movie pretty entertaining, but nothing that I felt I needed to run out and tell everyone about. If Jennifer Lawrence won for that performance I'd be shocked. Much like the movie as a whole, she was good but not amazing. And that's coming from a man who plans to marry her, which I will no doubt fail at.
Am I the only one that can't stand Bradley Cooper? Seems like a complete tool, and even though I've probably only seen about 3-4 movies he's in he's always completely "meh" to me. Would Silver Linings Playbook change my mind?

I couldn't stand Cooper before Silver Linings Playbook, but I think he's great in it. Probably my favorite performance in the film. But I seem to like SLP more than most of the posters in this thread, so grain of salt.
I thought it was his most likeable role that I've ever seen. And I'm pretty sure that's why he gets booked into most roles, so take that for what it's worth.

As per usual, given how the nominations ended up, I would say this will be another predictable Oscar night. Lincoln taking most, Pi and Les Miz splitting most others, and one or two surprises (Beasts or Amour taking best actress maybe).
I'm kind of glad I'll be on vacation on Oscar night as I would most likely put myself through another 4 hours of glad handing.
Last note on the nominations, Ben Affleck must have been a little upset when the phone didn't ring this morning
Anyone else disappointed about Sam Jackson and DiCaprio both being snubbed for Supporting Actor? I think Waltz was amazing, but I guess my view of him is skewed by Inglorious Basterds. IMO this was the best acting Jackson has done ever
I did think that Jackson in particular did an excellent job, Leo was good too... but I'm okay with them not getting Oscar nominations. Waltz was the superior of the 3 main supporting actors in that movie, anyway.

There is no reason for Robert De Niro in the ridiculous shiz screenplay in that shiz film (this goes especially for the member that stated that 'no one' hated it) got a supporting nomination over Leonardo Di Caprio. No reason besides the fact that whichever shiz studio distributed Silver Linings shizbook must have lobbied and spent millions lobbying to get nominations for every category. What a quacking shiz scene that 'parlay' scene was. Absolute shiz. Lifetime-level shiz. - E

Jurrasic Park 4 just got a release date. I'm markin out so hard right now. So excited. It's probably gonna be during Roo 2014, guess Ill have to wait a few extra days. The JP series is right up there with Indy for me. Now KRosko you've seen JP right?

Paul Thomas Anderson not getting nominated for best director and The Master not getting nominated for Best Picture surely must be some kind of joke. Or, more likely, his/its absence must have some BS political reason behind it.
Last Sunday I went on a new-film-watching spree (I felt totally out of the loop in 2012 on film, so I'm trying to play catch up) and saw these three movies and would give them the following grades:
Lincoln: A- Argo: B The Sessions: B+
Hawkes not getting an Academy Award nomination for the loudest role in his storied career is also a travesty. Lincoln was amazing and not at all what I expected. Argo, I thought, was a tad overhyped. Good, but nothing special.
I plan to see Zero Dark Thirty and watch Life of Pi (I already have it downloaded) this weekend. Maybe Silver Linings Playbook as well.
