I have seen enough references on here for long enough to feel like it deserves its own thread. I read The Gunslinger at age 13 and was devoted to the series through the end. Who else on here has loved/hated the whole thing?
Suzannah kinda started pissing me off a little toward the end...just seemed like a one-trick pony as a character. But apparently I was a lot happier with her than a bunch of other people, so whatevs. Everything else was lovely...wonderful job by King of creating his own world(s) to play with.

good series but it seemed like an ETERNITY before another book would come out!
I got lucky on this. I didn't even hear of them until shortly before the fifth book came out (that's probably why I heard of them then, come to think of it), so I got to read the first four all in a row, and I didn't have to wait long for Wolves of the Calla.
I loved the whole series! My brother and I had huge arguments because he didn't like the way it ended, and I thought it was the perfect ending.

I'd say that's probably a fair assessment. I stand by my previous statement (that I loved the whole series), but I can't deny that the first four were written much better than the last three. Wizard and Glass is my favorite of them.
Have you read any of the graphic novels? We have all but 3 and 7 of the first series of them, so I was waiting until we got them all before starting to read any of them.
^Yeah, I've read four of them I think, they're good...my friend has them. They kinda fill in the back story, and there was one that was kinda an origin story for Rhea, which was especially interesting to me.
wolf, we have to have a fireside chat about the dark tower at roo my gf loves them to death...
great collections of books. love wizard and glass, hated it initially, because i wanted the story to move forward, not backwards. but the second reading of the series it was quite enjoyable.
i need to sit down with all the comics and read them. my gf snagged them all off this guy on ebay - in sleeves with backings.
I have been waiting on the comics until they drop in price, but I am looking forward to them. Really even though they have faults these books are probably one of the best examples of epic literature I have ever read.
Wizard and Glass is one of my favorites as well, I wish the books had had more of Cuthbert in them.

I went yesterday to try to pick up the two volumes of the comics that we hadn't gotten, and Criminal Records is closed! So sad! Guess I will have to pick them up elsewhere.
Edit: I just realized that we didn't try hard enough . . . Criminal Records is not closed, it moved.

That was the first one I read, and is my favorite too. I never would have guessed that King could write a love story that would touch me like that. Probably helped that my girlfriend at the time had moved 2,000 miles away and I started reading it on a flight out to see her.
Btw, I'm pretty sure there was a pretty long thread about the dark tower on here back a few years ago.
Edit: yep, here it is. can never have enough discussion about DT though!
DT was a unique experience in that it was a tale lasting 17 years (at least I think that's the print time from 1st to last.) Kind of sad when it ended. Almost felt like a divorce or something knowing that such a long term relationship was over.
It was very strange re-reading them all at one sitting. It seemed to lose some of the depth having it all rush by so quickly.
I also thought that the last 3 volumes were a bit rushed and didn't do Flagg and the Crimson King justice. But King was recovering from his accident and seemed to want to put this chapter of his life and his writing behind him so...
I'm waiting for the comics to be reprinted as a single volume and will buy them then. Hopefully I'm not waiting in vain.
As I said in the previous thread, Oy was alway my favorite character.
I also used to have an original, autographed "Little Sisters of Eluria" poster but sold it on ebay when I got desperate for money.

I liked the fact that the Crimson King character found his way into other King novels (e.g. Desperation). Stephen King (love him or hate him) has created one of the most intricate character universes in contemporary literature.....

I had to dig deep to find this thread!
So, it looks like JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof have given up the rights to do the DT movies and apparently Ron Howard is now planning on making one movie to be followed by a tv series.
Also, King is planning on writing another book set between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. I didn't see that coming.

I like that approach^. If they can make a fricken Jonah Hex movie they can adapt TDT. Don't see a reason TDT wouldn't work as a series. It is really mostly character development and traveling, with minimal big action scenes; I think the biggest would be algul siento (disturbing that I actually remember the name of that). Interested in hearing who you guys would want to see playing Roland. Realistically maybe Jackie Earle Haley in a tv series. Viggo Mortensen in a movie.
Also can't believe he is going back to write another Dark Tower book, definitely did not expect that to be happening.

When i see her I just want to punch her in the face. A waste of space; there are millions of attractive women out there, most who choose not to effect my life by sharing their vapid thoughts with all sorts of media. I just hope she doesn't make Jonah Hex unbearable, as she does pretty much anything else she is in.
this was a great series. some of the best books i've read in a long time. it was probably 5 years ago when i read them though so it's probably time for a re-read.

Have you forgotten the face of your father? TDT is the best story ever. I agree that the final books were rushed, it seemed like he was worried he was going to die and never finish, which I'm glad didn't happen but c'mon Mr. King. The way he incorporated his other stories and book characters into the series was awesome (Father Callahan is awesome) BUT I disliked that Stephen King was actually in the book too. I mean it as kinda cool and very trippy, he's the only writer that could pull that off besides clive Barker but a little cheesy. There are other worlds than these....

I'm on the fence with the idea that Ron Howard is gonna do his thing to one of my favorite stories. I had an idea that Richard Linklater should be allowed to do it with rotoscoping, or that it should be animated in some way. But Ron Howard? I don't hate the guy, he's made some good movies, it's just....I mean......ya know?
