I like Ron Howard, but he is also producing a remake of Real Genius, which is an even worse idea.
Whoever said that Clint Eastwood should play Roland, that is the most brilliant idea I can think of, but I hate to say it, he turns 80 on Monday so to get involved in a trilogy like this... ... but my God he would be perfect if he did.
As far as directors, hmmm... I think I'd rather see someone like Frank Darabont who did The Green Mile and Shawshank, plus the extremely underrated The Mist. He seems to have a really good grasp of interpreting King's prose to the screen without losing the depth.
Would be awesome if Tim Burton did the whole thing in a Nightmare Before Christmas animation style, but that is just a fantasy of mine.
Whatever he does, Ron Howard would do well to make sure he focuses on the characters to move the story along, and not vice versa, because that is what makes so many movies less great than they could have been these days, and that is what makes most Steven King stories transcend their genre and stand out in greatness.

I agree with everything you said except the tim Burton thing. He already ruined Willy Wonka and Alice in Wonderland for me, I don't need him muddying up my Dark Tower. Nightmare before xmas style animation would be killer though, just leave out tim burton (Plus we don't need Johnny Depp as Roland, Tim Burton has a man crush on that dude) Frank Darabont DESERVES it though. The Mist is VERY underrated, such a great movie. You are correct about Ron Howard, he's good at characters. I just don't know what to think.... I take my Dark Tower very very seriously and it IS hollywood afterall, whoever does it will mess something up. I figure that i will be disappointed somehow. I'm gonna go chug some hater-ade now.

Roland was partly based off Clint Eastwood, but he is definitely too old now. As long as someone approaches TDT as more of a drama than an action movie or series it is a step in the right direction.

You know what, I really should have said Henry Selick, the man who actually directed Nightmare and everyone forgets about him, not to mention James and the Giant Peach, plus CORALINE! which is an almost perfect adaptation of that novel IMO, and that comes from a HUGE Neil Gaiman fan, I am.

tv.ign.com/articles/114/1140177p1.html The first movie has a date! I'm crossing my fingers for Daniel Day Lewis as Roland, but am pretty confident he wouldn't commit to a project that will go on this long. Something else that wouldn't surprise is if they do "The Gunslinger" as the first movie they could use one actor, then switch to an older one for everything after.
Also somewhat related, I am currently working through BSG and every time they say "All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again" (The first line from Peter Pan actually) I can't help but think of "Ka is a wheel".

Some more casting news for Roland. Thinking about I actually wouldn't mind Javier Bardem.
Dude, Bardem would be awesome! He could bring that otherworldly aspect, along with the cowboy archetype. I've never considered him but I'd be behind that 100%.

First...that's awesome that this thread exists. The storyline was epic, and I'm really glad that Mr. King finished the series rather than leaving the possibility still open that it would never be finished. And the ending, though predictable, was perfect.
Totally agree on the Clint Eastwood comment. I had always (and still do) envision Roland as the Clint Eastwood from the Fistfull of Dollars "man with no name" character.
I think Viggo Mortensen could pull it off well, especially with the slightly bearded/long hair look he had in The Road and LoTR.
I really hope they don't screw up onscreen presentation of this story though...it's going to require a solid/dedicated/consistent budget to pull off...

Aw man, I can't believe I hadn't heard of the movie plans!
Came across an article with some interesting info...there's going to be a move, tv season, movie, tv season, movie...the second tv season will be with Roland as a young man, so presumably Wizard & Glass content. Not sure how I feel about that being on the small screen, but maybe it fits after all.
EDIT: Maybe not. From an earlier more comprehensive article linked above...
"After that sequel is done, the TV series picks up again, this time focusing on Deschain as a young gunslinger. Those storylines will be informed by a prequel comic book series that King was heavily involved in plotting."

The comic book is in the Wizard and Glass setting, and mostly just elaborates on those events. At least the first release is, those are the only ones I read. It makes sense to do W&G as one of the tv seasons, as its one of the longer books and probably the slowest paced of them.

I think Ron Howard should narrate in the same vein as Arrested Development. "So, Roland had no choice but to continue toward the dark Tower, but little did he know Gob would be waiting....with a favor to ask." ha.
reading Insomnia afterwords was the icing on the cake
There are at least 16 SK books with DT connections and many, many short stories (though Insomnia is one of the best.) It was strange reading them while DT was being written and trying to find out exactly what was going on. I even got to where I wished SK would NOT have a connection because he seemed to do it in every book in the 90's.
On a side note I used to have a signed/numbered poster of Little Sisters of Eluria" when that short story came out but sold it during desperate times. Wish I had it back As I've never seen another,

Universal has been cancelling a lot of projects recently, hopefully Warner Bros picks it up. If they wanted to they really don't have to do this too sfx heavy. The only thing that is really a grand scale in my mind is Lud.
I have been moving and packing up all my books this week and came across them again I will have to reread them myself.
Yeah man...I was just thinking this as well. When I read them, I was waiting years between books. I'd like to read the entire series from book to book again in the near future

I did this earlier this year. You should do it. It all seemed to make better sense when read back to back.

Agree, I would actually prefer it isn't sfx heavy...no cheese, please.

it's funny, i put off reading the last book of the series for almost two years, all because i simply wasn't ready for the tale to end. I reread the first ones over and over before finally giving in and finishing it off.

I sort of did the same, except stopped reading them out of sheer exhaustion of the story at the time. I finally picked up the seventh about a month ago and just finished it last night. It's nice to have closure to the story; I really enjoyed the series but I will probably never get wrapped up in another again. Just way too much of an investment. I would LOVE to see these made into movies, they scream for it.
