Friday night looks like a late night conflict with Girl Talk, and probably Paul Oakenfold (judging by the late night line up of last yeah, which MSTRKRFT followed by Tiesto). Definitely going to be munching on some Phish.
I just hope there's no which stage action on friday night. That tinny sound tends to cut into what stage's sometimes and i want to hear phish unblemished
when you go to ben harpers myspace page all of his tourdates have their exact times on them for their performance they vary so he has bonnaroo's listed as 11:45 which will be giving him a late night so saturdays late nights are shaping up to be Mars Volta, Ben Harper, NIN, with Volta and NIN probably only overlapping for a half hour or so, plus with the development of the possibility Yeasayer MGMT in a tent latenight this is going to be an interesting saturday latenight
I dont really know that I see Ben Harper playing a late night. He's a really good mid-late afternoon act.

Last time Ben was pre-headliner mainstage before The Police, I doubt he would get anything other than a pre-headliner spot or a midnight. With Wilco being there its one or the other being pre/post to Bruce and If you are gonna put NIN and probablt Mars Volta latenight to counter those choices throw in Ben Harper and you have the conflicts that are bound to happen. Its definitely going to be interesting going from Bruce to NIN musically what a range on the spectrum of music to jump to.
I'm curious, why is no one considering Beastie Boys for a late night spot? I agree that Friday night before Phish is ideal, but I don't even see people mentioning them as a possibility for a late night. I think an instrumental late night would be sweet
2012 Wishlist: Radiohead Phish Daft Punk Ghostland Observatory Broken Social Scene Roger Waters Bell X1 Bonobo Chemical Brothers Fiona Apple Built to Spill Modest Mouse
I would love to see a late night Beastie Boys instrumental set, but they are just too big to play anything other than the What Stage. Since Phish is already playing late on What, Beastie Boys can't really play anything other than before Phish. Some people have suggested B-Boys on Which late night, but I don't think the (currently) 3rd highest billed act will play the Which Stage.
also... all this hoopla about who "headlines" when is kind of pointless. I prefer to think about it logistically. eg. When/How can all the top tier acts be best accommodated on the main stage. Let me give examples.
On Friday the top two billed acts are Beasties and Phish. Of the two Phish is already confirmed latenight and will indeed have a bigger light set-up than the Beasties. Which means they will install all of Phishs lights n such on Thursday and leave em up untill their set ends on Friday (anybody else recall Radioheads and Tools screens and lights all set up before centeroo even opened). The Beasties, who only have a few screens (ala Jack Johnson) and a DJ booth for Mix Master Mike, can set up around Phishs lights. Logistically it seems that Beasties can play before Phish and not get in the way of their elaborate lighting scheme... and maybe have a standup comedian inbetween during the transition period.
On Friday if NIN are indeed bring all their lights and equipment on saturday, they would have to set up as much of that as they could during the day (after Phish finishes their latenight show on Friday), with everything ready to go before anybody even hits the stage on Saturday afternoon (if anybody else remembers Wayne's UFO from 07, this is a good example). Also to tear down all those light banks and such would take hours so nobody can realistically follow NiN on that stage. To me this means Bruce 8-11 NiN 1-3. Though I've never seen Bruce (judging by the superbowl show) I dont think he will have an elaborate light show.
if they weren't gonna add another headliner, then why not just mention who is going to headline friday night?
because they assume anyone looking at the lineup is smart enough that they can clearly see the headliners as being the first three on the list? Just like they've always been?

but couldn't they just as easily assume that anyone reading an e-mail is smart enough to clearly see that something that is normally done every year has been omitted. The what stage 8-11 headliner?
Just a thought.
I like to think we're getting something big added. Why not make christmas a little better with another big present?
why cant beasties headline friday. End by 11 or so and let phish start at 12-1230
And for all of you who don't think Beasties are big/good enough to headline, clearly y'aint never seen em play their instruments.
I've seen them and I still feel that they pale in "epicness" compared to Phish and Bruce. And they haven't really done much buzzworthy in over a decade.
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to their set but one of those three is not like the others. Questioning the Friday headliner slot is not unreasonable, though it may ultimately be pointless with the simplest answer being the most logical.

Because they went to the trouble of spelling out the Phish and Bruce slots and neglected to spell out the Friday 8-11 slot. Or is your reasoning that this is like Soduku and they have given us the information to fill in that blank so that they wouldn't have to be bothered with posting a picture and typing a sentence?
Here's my take. AC/Superfly had their headliners set with Phish, Springsteen and Beastie Boys. Then suddenly NIN fell into their lap at the last second. And now it looks like the same might happen with Jane's Addiction. So there is, of course, the chance that they were planning for Beastie Boys to be the headliner, that they're in negotiations with someone like Jane's Addiction as a potential add, and that they're keeping their mouths shut about the Friday headliner because they don't want to close or open any doors on the situation until they're 100% certain of what they have.
I tend to agree with the notion that Jay-Z and Neil Young seem unrealistic. But given the lack second addition to the initial lineup of NIN and their subsequent touring with a reunited Jane's Addiction, I think you have to open yourself up to the possibility that the situation has changed.
This doesn't mean the addition of a Friday headliner is by any means a lock. I just think AC/Superfly is allowing themselves the leeway to change their minds.

I think we are all missing the boat on this one guys. We need to stop thinking that the headliner has to play in the 8-11 spot on Friday. Yes that is how it's been in the past but what time would you rather see Phish at on Friday night, 8-11 or 12 until the sun comes up???? The headliner on Friday is Phish!! It's just Phish will be playing later then what the normal headliner would have played. When Bonnaroo made the announcement the other day they did announce all the headliners. Once we stop thinking that the headliner has to be in the 8-11 spot the answer is really simple.

the last three pages of this thread is pretty much repeating the same things but in different words. everyone should just chill and not get crazy over the "headliner" on Friday till we get a schedule or other confirmation

The thing is...until we get an additional round, we're pretty much going to be like a bunch of first graders given juice and cookies an hour before recess...

see i dont think Phish is the friday headliner. the whole time they have been very clear to tell us that Phish had 1 headlining set and 1 late night set. it may work out that Beasties are the friday headliner, but it is odd they didnt include them in the announcement. I think theres a good chance we are gettin a big name add to take the headling spot friday. I would love for it to be Jay-Z, but I believe Janes Addiction is much more likely with their announced tour with NIN.
I am leaning towards spmirish03's thinking but I acknowledge that they may simply be changing their definition of "headliner". I guess my hang up with the situation is that it is very awkward. It's a change from the norm and we don't have the 8-11 Friday What Stage answer to end this discussion. Unfortunately, this will keep us going round and round until there is more put out there.
I do think that the easiest thing to do would be to say who was playing in that time slot, "headliner" symantics aside, but they're just not ready to do so.
This may end up being the 09 version of 08's "Big Announcement" -- much ado about nothing!
Would they schedule a "headliner" to play with every other stage also having acts performing? No. That takes away from the glory and prestige of being THE headliner for the evening. Would they shut down the rest of the stages for a Phish late night on Friday? Absolutely not. Would they shut down all of the stages for a Beastie Boys 8-11 What Stage slot? Definitely. I don't see how theres this much argument going on...
And another thought. We know Bruce is "headlining" saturday. We know Phish is "headlining" sunday. We know Phish is playing a "special late night" on the What Stage. That only really leaves open two slots big enough for NIN and Beastie Boys. Those two slots being "special late night" on the What After Bruce (NIN did say Bonnaroo had a "special" spot for them) and Friday's "headliner" spot. So...by a simple process of elimination, you can clearly see that the Beastie Boys are the Friday headliner. If another, larger act got added, exactly where would they be placed? Beastie Boys and NIN are both far too big to be playing the Which stage and both far too big to be playing late-afternoon pre-headliner. I know you guys are just trying to leave hope that The Dead or Jay-Z or Jane's Addiction or someone else will get added, but its just not likely. You just have to be realistic here.

Beasties could easily be a pre-headliner. Jack Johnson was listed 3rd on the poster last year and he pre-headlined for Pearl Jam. Its not as cut and dry as you explain Chandler. Hell they could even put Beastie late night friday to help break up the crowd with the Phish headliner.
i think that a likely scenerio is Beastie -> Add -> Phish.
like i said it very well could end up that the Beasties are the headliner, but its very odd they didnt mention them in the announcement. maybe they did as a marketing scheme. by leaving the possibility open its making people talk about it. who knows whats gonna happen with it, im not sayin we are going to get a big name add for sure, but the possibility is real.
if we are being realistic we know that there is a chance someone will be added. bonnaroo has constantly been changing. they have sort of a formula that they follow but that has been changing every year. fact is we don't know what they are doing yet.

Clearly it all points to the mythic Thursday Headliner riding into the festival on a chariot pulled by unicorns driven by Bigfoot.
But seriously. I stand by my theory that Superfly's just keeping their options open. If they have a lead on a big act, it might end up being worth their while keeping things ambiguous for the time being. Because nothing is implied by this announcement other than what they told us.
And at the end of the day, if it is Beastie Boys like we'd assume, who's really going to be disappointed?

Jack Johnson was SUPPOSED to be the headliner on Sunday until the pre-headliner that day (Allman Brothers Band) dropped off and Widespread Panic took their place. Bonnaroo couldnt reasonably ask WSP to be pre-headliner just one hear after headlining on Sunday so Jack Johnson volunteered to move to play pre-Pearl Jam (whom he is very good friends with). Its not like they put Jack in the #3 spot and actually planned for him to play pre-headliner.

Of all the options on this thread, the least likely is that the Beasties are Friday's headliner, but AC/S snubbed them when they announced the other headliners. Dissing a headliner like that would be an incredibly bad business decision, and it certainly wouldn't help AC/S in the future when they are trying to book headliners for future Roos.
