8-)K - this will be my 4th year at Roo!!! YAY!!!! I am wondering (as long as no one hates me for it..hehe) what the best guest you have seen at Roo is? I loved when Stevie Nicks came out with Tom Petty - that was a surprise man! Morello w/Tool was killer, but we knew that Tom was already there for his Nightwatchmen thing....Tegan & Sara at Tiesto was a given....tell me more please????
YES. take one of the greatest live bands ever during one of the climaxes of one of their greatest sets ever in a rainstorm during one of their greatest songs ever and add kirk hammett ripping on his guitar the entire time.... one of the greatest moments in music

JPJ w/ Mule has to be the hands down winner. That is one of those sets that everyone swears they were at; but honestly, when JPJ came on stage, there were not more than 1,000 people at Gov't Mule's set.
John Popper showed up and played with moe. in '03. One of the guys introduced him as his dad since it was fathers day. Also G Love played with Jack Johnson that year, pretty sure he played harmonica on Mud Football.
Also JPJ showed up during Uncle Earls set on early Friday and also played with Gillian Welch if I am not mistaken.

You're absolutely right. I was amazed at how small the crowd was. Anyone could have pretty easily made their way right up to the rail.
Highest per capita ass-kicking I've ever witnessed.

JPJ with Mule has to take the cake. I had just wandered from the lips mid roll. As soon as I walked to the tent, which was empty, I walked right up to the middle of the tent and JPJ walked out lol.
See, but now you're all only talking about collaborations. There's already a thread for that somewhere. Those aren't really "surprise" guests, as they were already scheduled on the farm.
Adrien Belew is a good one though, I forgot to include that one.
those definitely still qualify as surprise guests. Hammett coming out with MMJ was 100% surprising to me even though i had just seen him in the show before.
I dont think being on the lineup eliminates you from being a surprise if you arent listed with the band you come out with.
Vedder coming out with Jack was not really a surprise though
