Treated myself to some solid record purchases today:
Gene Clark - One In A Hundred/She's The Kind of Girl (7", RSD) Neon Neon - Years of Lead EP (RSD) Prince - Around The World In A Day Talk Talk - It's My Life Dire Straits - Dire Straits Ornette Coleman - An Evening With Ornette Coleman Part 1 (RSD) Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (2011 reissue) Van Morrison - Saint Dominic's Preview
Also, these came in from Discogs today... very satisfied with the condition of all, Discogs has yet to let me down with an order: Skinny Puppy - Bites Skinny Puppy - Remission My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - I See Good Spirits & I See Bad Spirits (really blown away with the condition of this one, damn near mint for a fairly hard to find record)
I went ahead and impulse purchased one of these last night. Regardless of how much I end up liking the movie or its music, I think this is going to be a great item to have, especially if the movie ends up being as big a hit as is predicted.
Plus the link is 404'd, it appears. Guess they already sold all 75.

I grabbed one, too... I haven't seen the movie but love the soundtrack. I've been listening to it on Spotify. Audition, Someone in the Crowd, Another Day of Sun, and City of Stars are fantastic.
I'm seconds away from confirming purchase for the new EP, Fragile, and Fragile: Deviations... But man, that's a steep price for an alternate takes album.

Edit: ah, fuck it... Purchase confirmed.
I just went through the same dilemma with the same result.
Jim James surprised people who bought his album in record stores with an orange vinyl of "Eternally Even". It doesn't show it on the cover. I was at my local store and just happened to pick up a copy before I saw his social media post about it.

Nice. I need to pick this up. I see it's also going to be in the vinylmeplease store but I'm not sure if I"m going to sign up for this upcoming record.
I've got an original pressing of Notorious BIG's "Life After Death" being held for me at 2nC... From what I can tell, it's a pretty decent price and a fairly hard to find record, but both the media and sleeve have noticeable wear, so it would most likely end up being a "collectable" purchase if anything. Really torn on this one.
The U-Turn Orbit Plus is currently sitting in a box at my apt. I plan on having it set up this weekend. I'll let you know my initial thoughts once it's up and running.
Seems to be really well made and is at a very attractive price point.
One of my goals of 2017 is to finally upgrade my turntable. I am deciding between the Audiotechnica LP-120 and the U-Turn Orbit Plus. I was reading through some past posts and saw you had purchased the Orbit. Do you recommend it? Thanks

Yeah, I think at the price point it's a great turntable. It's well made and produces very solid sound. Honestly, the only downside is that you have to manually change the belt when switching between 33 / 45..that can kind of be a pain.
Overall though I would recommend. I believe you can now order with the pre-amp already installed which is pretty convenient. Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

Thanks for the info. Is it easy to change the belt? Do you just loop it around the opposite 33/45 notch? Also, how sturdy is the dust cover?
I love my Audio Technica LP60 and it has been fantastic for over five years... but I want to be able to customize my turntable and upgrade when needed.

Vinylmeplease is $75 for 3 months. They are advertising a holiday gift option that is $100 for 3 months with a $25 credit. Am I missing something? Is there a benefit to the gift thing compared to the regular subscription?

I posted this in Random Thoughts but it could get some visibility here, too. I'm guessing a few of you guys know your shit when it comes to home stereo set ups.
Does anyone know a decent amount about home stereo systems?
My dad asked me to look into things he would need and maybe some reviews because he wants to turn his old stereo system into something a bit more modern.
Currently he's got an old school receiver thing that has a radio tuner and a 500-disc CD player attached. This is connected to speakers in the living room as well as some speakers outside attached to the house (for when doing yard work or having a party or whatever).
I'm not sure where to begin. He wants to ditch the CDs altogether and go towards an iPod or hard drive type of situation. I'm so behind with current audio hardware that I'm not sure what's good and the pros/cons of these kind of things.

I would imagine he has the CD changer plugged into either CD/Line In, or Aux - This first cord would work fine for an iPod, as well as a line out/headphone jack on a laptop. RCA's to 3.5mm
There is also a USB to RCA (red/white) box that you could plug into a USB slot if the headphone/line out jack isn't working properly. It looks something like this.....
He shouldn't have to upgrade the receiver if he doesn't want to, considering he wants to use digital sources. If an analogue source, there are numerous portable pre-amps the size of a hand that you could use to amplify an analogue signal up to digital. 1 set of RCA inputs (from TT or other), 1 set of RCA outputs, and 1 6.35 or 6.5 mm jack output. The one posted is a basic model. There are others that let you control volume independently for a headphone output as well.
How did I do?
edit: SORRY - REREAD YOUR POST - I collect LP's, but almost all of my music I transferred long ago to my hard drive. It is more convenient for travel/take w you anywhere. You just have to take the time to copy all of it through an interface (computer) of some kind.

To change the belt you do just loop it around the notch, but what makes it difficult is the platter does not have a groove for the belt, which means it can come off relatively easily when changing. The dust cover is actually pretty flimsy - the only piece of the table that's not very well made. It's possible they have upgraded the cover at this point too.

There are so many directions your dad could go with this. Has he tried streaming or is he interested in it? Giving him a something that allows him to stream Google/Apple/Spotify whatever could absolutely blow his mind.
If he isn't interested in streaming he could rip his CDs, do you know if he's done that yet? Could be quite a task if he has a significant library. There are hard drive based solutions he could look into if this is what he wants.
Not sure what your dad's tolerance for tinkering is but when I think add parent + electronics, I want the answer to = simple. I'm wondering if something like a new HDMI based receiver and an Apple TV (or google TV, depending on his software of choice) would be a great solution, along with a subscription to an appropriate streaming service. But does he have a TV hooked up to his stereo?
If no TV another simple solution could be a laptop loaded up with his favorite tunes, run an HDMI cable from his laptop to a new receiver.
Just spitballing a few things, if you can narrow down his preferences and goals I could offer more specific gear choices.

He is not big into streaming. Like at all. I figured I would help rip all the CDs to a hard drive if needed. I think he thinks that he can just load everything into an ipod but doesn't realize how much space all those CDs actually take up.
Right now the TV in the living room is not hooked up to speakers but I think he'd like that. Not sure if he'd be into getting a new TV just for this.
So basically he wants radio tuner + music library + (if possible) connect to TV that can output to speakers inside and out (with the ability to switch from "Just outside" .vs. "just inside" .vs. "inside and outside".

look into something like the WD TV Live or a similar media center that has built in storage and variable uses. like apple tv, but better.

Im looking for some advice on a new turntable to buy. I'm working with TEAC Nostalgia right now (nothing special), I inherited most of my grandparents records and this was the last player left of course. To be fair though i got the 1920s Victrola player. Anyway I had it for almost a year now and doubled my record collection and I'm almost certain the platter is spinning just a little to fast and its just enough to get under my skin when I notice it. I'm looking to buy a new one, preferably one of them ones that you can hook up external speakers to and get the best sound of the records.. The Audio Technica ones look nice but i'm clueless to quality, if you need certain needles etc. I plan on researching myself too, I figured some suggestions from here couldn't hurt.

I just picked up a Rega Planar 1 from a local shop. Love it so far. It is spartan with features but does what I need it to very well. Power switch is hidden on the bottom side but very easy to access. Pull the platter to adjust the belt for speed, a quick process. It also does not have a built in pre-amp but that is easily overcome if your receiver lacks one. Stock cart and it is a big step up from the old Pioneer PL-7 I had in play before.
So my ol' inherited amplifier fer my setup has finally given up the ghost. 'Tis a sad day. I remember this bein' used throughout my childhood and teenage years. Any suggestions on a new one?
What was your old amp? What's your budget for a new one?
I'll have to take a look tomorrow. Just been a crazy few weeks. Current budget is basically nada. But a friend said he knows a shop that sells refurbished amps and could possibly fix mine. Fingers crossed!
