While we're all pounding each other on the back over our vinyl purchases and super cool music tastes, I'm in the market for a new set of speakers. Not looking to go super expensive, and I'd rather a smaller set simply to make things easier when moving/arranging.
Inexpensive, moves easily, and quality should be on par with your musical tastes.

These Dayton bookshelf speakers have consistently great reviews. They are small and definitely affordable so could be right up your alley.
I currently just play my rekkids through a cheap sony turntable, my surround sound denon receiver and tiny boston acoustic speakers. I eventually want to get a separate system just for vinyl, but I can't stop buying gotdamn vinyl to save up for a system. postjack's setup def makes me jelly. I'll probably just end up getting a cheap 2 channel receiver and some bookshelves to hold me over until after I pay off all these damn student loans, replace 10+ year old vehicles, and get my shit together in general. 10+ years from now though...I'll be like "REGA RP3 IN YO FACE, POSTJACK!" and he'll be like "brah, that shit's weak, look what I upgraded to:" and it'll be some custom music hall VPI collaboration pee wee herman bike mod build and I'll be like "ah. fah q."

Got the belt back to working on my old RCA set, now I'm back to spinning... bought a copy of Skinny Puppy's "Mythmaker" off of Discogs the other night, waiting for it and the Download "Fixer" lps to ship soon. Saw a copy of Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" at Second and Charles the other day, decided I'd come back the next day to get it when I had more cash... it was gone. This inspired me to make it the next on my to get list as I'm sure I can find a copy easily online.

The Roots - How I Got Over OutKast - Stankonia OutKast - Aquemini DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.... Black Keys - Rubber Factory Paul Simon - Graceland The Clash - Combat Rock Miles Davis - Kind of Blue 180g
for 52.13. I can't even tell you how long I sat on a couple of Best Buy gift cards before this sale.

What's your budget? I love my PSB Image B6. Solid build quality, surprisingly slamming bass, easy to drive, neutral sound bordering on polite.
Described by stereophile as "the Honda accord" of speakers.
For powered monitors I hear good things about the Audioengines, but I've never heard them myself.

Lols. You'll have to come over and listen some time. Finally got the ESL-63s up and running, but they are in a tiny room, definitely not ideal. Still sounds rad though.
My headphone system is mah pride and joy, but the most fun is my humblest rig, the HT setup. Demon receiver, lowest model SVS cylinder sub from several years ago, and the aforementioned PSBs.
Anyone buying music instead of gear is doing the right thing. The audiophile rabbit hole is deep and full of bullshit.
But I do love my gear, and it does help me see deeper into recordings, which can really be a crazy experience. Really feeling the room Miles Davis recorded in, hearing the distortion of the speakers from Live at the Fillmore East like you are actually there, Ryan Adams voice like he's fucking sitting in front of you playing? These are good things.
Not trying to be all like "hey my shit is fly the rest of you suck", just promoting a hobby I'm passionate about.

Keep your eyes on craigslist.
I scored a pair of Polk audio tsi300's for 100 and a pair of Boston Acoustic VR40's for 200.
Granted, I had to spend some cash to pubs the VR 40s but they sound amazing.
Also got a pair of Bose 901s for 60$.
Keep your eyes peeled and you'll score some killer speakers for cheap - but you have to stay on it until a great deal pops up.
I've seen awesome older Polk Audio speakers hit on Craigslist for like 250 that would have sold for 1300-1500$ new 10 years ago, which means they're fantastic.
Just remember if the wattage (RMS) is high, you'll need an amp and those aren't cheap no matter how you cut it

I built this record shelf over the weekend. Had some cleanup help from my dad since I'm terrible at cutting shit. Anyway, I needed some more space for my records and I wanted to try this out after I found the plans for it online. Really happy with how it turned out:

Yea, that's exactly why I wanted to make this one. Like being at a record store and flipping through the albums. Just need to add some trim to it and it'll be complete.
Handsome rack. Not sure how I feel about the finish, but still.
Meaning a crappy job of finishing or just the color isn't what you'd pick? I know I fucked up in a few spots on the second coat after I put the shelf together that I couldn't notice until after it dried a bit and I moved it into my apartment with better lighting.
I've seen that one sheet plan on audio karma for a while. How long did it take you to build
Not too long. I got the sheet of wood from Home Depot and had them make the first few big cuts just so I could have it in 3 pieces. Took it home and stained it in a day or two (mostly just waiting to dry).
Then making the rest of the cuts didn't take super long but since I'm not a real man who knows how to work with wood I had to have my dad clean it up a bit and straighten some sides because a few pieces had to match up.
From there it was just glue and screw which took maybe a little over an hour.
Overall it was a few days worth of work but if you wanted you could probably get it done over a weekend.

Mostly the color. I would have either gone with a less dark color or a thinner coating of it.

Yea, I was looking at some lighter colors but a majority of my furniture is dark brown or black so I figured I'd stick with that for now. May make another one in the future as my collection keeps growing.
Here are some photos from the audiokarma thread that show it in different colors/stains that came out a bit better than mine:
All the Best Buy stuff came today. They have some good and possibly proprietary cardboard packaging.
I got really, really pissed off when I bought something from Best Buy a few months back and the box came all dented and messed up. Then I opened that box up to find another box with my records safely packaged inside. It was a great packaging setup that protected the records with a kind-of buffer zone. Was really impressed by that. No real chance of them being bent since it was protected inside a second box.
