Animal Collective is one of my favorite bands and I've seen them multiple times...but I have to agree with most of these posts. They sounded iffy at parts and some of the build-ups just did not work. Honestly, I blame a lot of my disappointment on the heat and their daytime slot. They DO NOT need to be at 2:45 in the damn afternoon. Too many songs from MPP! Blah.
MGMT really made me sad. They were one of the last late-night bands of the weekend and it just sucked, I'm sorry. I was willing to give them a second chance and they again did not do it for me.

For me it was definately TVOTR and Of Montreal, though it was largely due to the sound guys You'd think a festival like Bonnaroo would have some of the best in the business since 80,000 people didn't just show up to eat corndogs and listen to farting bass for 4 days.

It blows my mind that so many people were highly anticipating MGMT. Spin magazine said something like "MGMT were the REAL Bonnaroo headliners!"
Seriously?
I saw some of their set last year and it was passable at best - like listening to the record. It's crazy to think some people missed the last NIN show to see that.

^^^Thank you. I've had to sit through their sleepy show twice waiting for a superior band to play. I really don't understand why they got such a prime late night spot, or even was invited back.
And related to that I thought Animal Collective was great out of context, but suffered terribly from their crap schedule slot. I'm impressed anyone could enjoy their lush, ambient electronic washes in the hot Tennessee sun. I wasn't bothered that they didn't sound like their record--I didn't want them to--but there was no way I could enjoy it in that atmosphere.

IMO the most disppointing show is the one you miss that you should have seen, but this thread is actually making me feel better about some of the bands I missed!! LOL
I gave TVOTR & the Beasties another chance after seeing lackluster shows from both in the past year, but nothing about their 'roo shows did anything to change my mind
I also agree the Animal Collective show wasn't great, but I was off to the side listening for a while and it wasn't as horrible as everyone says either...I'll try to catch them again
Band of Horses and MGMT for me. Both groups had absolutely no energy and I found myself bored. Which is disappointing because I love their respective studio work.
i was so pumped for MGMT and I was so sad to see that show and be let down
does anyone else feel like they just needed to turn that shizniz up!? Probably my fault for being in the back but I almost had to ask the people beside us to stop talking cause i couldnt hear anything!

I agree with this completely, saw them last year and was baffled to see them get a late night set. Their live show just completely lacks any energy.
About the sound on Which Stage, it was pretty good for all of the shows I saw there. (Animal Collective, David Byrne, NIN, Band of Horses) and overall the sound was so much better this year then last year, there were no real bad technical difficulties that really ruined some sets for me last year.

I've seen them 4 times now and I have given them many chances and this was the final chance they had to prove me wrong. They are possibly the biggest upset in a band of all time. The studio album is just so catchy and poppy. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I'm glad others can see how disappointing this is. If you asked me the hype of the show was way too big for what everyone got. Poor MGMT fans.

Sunday night Phish... It was good... but compared to Friday? Half as good...
I am not a phish phan and still planned on being there for both shows.... and wasn't expecting much...
What did I get Friday Night... BLOWN AWAY amazing... trey was spot on... the band sounded great... the energy was unbelievable...
Then sunday came... and I enjoyed it... but it didn't compare to Friday night... Personally.. i think Trey was fudged up sunday night and not on Friday... any thoughts on that... he def looked it
Modify: All together though... Phish was great... and turned me into a phan
Also the Beastie Boys... I wish that rather than trying to impress Bonnaroo with their Jamming they would have just BEEN THE BEASTIE BOYS and played their stuff.
What are you talking about? They wrote those jams which are on several studio albums. They weren't trying to impress anyone, that was a typical BBoys show, except for the few flubs.

I can't believe no one has said David Byrne yet. This was my #1 most anticipated show of the entire weekend. I got my head just right and got all the way to the front left, directly in front of the speakers. Then the show started and it sounded like it was coming from someone's car parked in bfe. The entire time I was there, everyone in the crowd was saying, "TURN IT UP!" but no one ever did. It was just sad. I had to leave because I knew he was gonna play my favorite songs and I couldn't watch them get ruined by bad sound.

I heard you guys screaming. I was on the left side of the rail. The sound was pristine. Must be some weird Which Stage magic.

Where I was standing on the right side of the stage the sound was perfect. It does suck when sounds is off in any way shape or form. But if you could hear it like I could it was by far the best show of Bonnaroo 09.

It may have been where you were located. The Which stage is easily the worst stage at The Roo. Where I was, it was amazing and easily a highlight of the festival. Was torn between seeing Byrne and the Beasties, and I have no regrets at all.
5/15 TV on the Radio 5/17/09 Crystal Method 5/27/09 The National 6/9/09 Animal Collective 6/11-6/14/09 Bonnaroo 10/2-10/4/09 Austin City Limits 10/30-11/1/09 Voodoo Fest
of Montreal needs to revamp their live show. Maybe start a new phase or era of their band. It's been the same thing for years. Having seen them before, I was yawning during their entire set.
Having never seen them before, I thought they were amazing. Band sounded tight, trippy visuals, a lot of energy. However, I could see it getting boring if they never change it up.
Well I'm glad Byrne wasn't a total bust for everyone that attended. I guess I should have moved but I was too pissed at that point to stay at which. There had to be something wrong on the left side of the stage. That is the first show I've been to where the crowd noise was louder than the stage noise.

Sound at the Which Stage is consistently horrific. I felt like I was wearing ear muffs during this set. So disappointing since I saw him the Saturday prior and was so excited to catch him twice in one week.

I was actually thinking during Mule's set that it sounded as though they had fixed the sound at the Which Stage. Everything I saw there was absolutely perfect to me. I guess they still have some things to fix up though. I thought Byrne was incredible and the sound was spot on. I was just a little bit to the right of the soundboard if I remember correctly.
I really don't think I saw a disappointing show all weekend. The only disappointment came when I checked the time after the Phish show on Friday and it was 2:08.

Maybe you're right. I haven't exactly listened to all their albums all the way through. I just know I saw them about 5 years ago and it was an entirely different show. They just rapped for the first 2/3. And it wasn't til the last 1/3 that they took out their instruments. And when they did it was really special and exciting. They played all their hits and rapped a few lesser known songs and fan favorites. They didn't do nearly as much jamming. And I liked it better that way. To me, the Beastie boys are a rap group. I never though of the beastie boys as a 'jam band' or even really a 'band' for that matter. It felt to me like it was all contrived to try and impress bonnaroo

I was disappointed a little by girl talk, beasties, and band of horses.
Girl talk's albums are great, but I think he failed to live up to the hype live.
The Beastie Boys could have been tighter. It wasn't their music choice, it seems like it wasn't all together, like maybe they could have rehearsed more. The NAS part was very tight, like they definitely rehearsed that part.
Band of Horses was boring, sad because it was one of my must sees. I left Snoop early (and was having an amazingly good time) only to be disappoint by BoH. I left after 3 songs and went to catch the rest of Coheed (which I thought was surprisingly good).

Unfortunately, I think you were just in a bad spot. The middle is where to be, not to the left or right side. Sound at the Which stage does suck, though. It ruined the beginning of TVOTR's set, but I thought it got better as it went along. Byrne was the best set of the festival, that's why he's nowhere to be found on this list.
As for my most disappointing? Animal Collective sucked. I will give them another chance b/c of the bad time slot. So glad I checked out Grace Potter's set, which was fantastic and then the end of Galactic, who may have put on the most high energy 30 mins I saw at Roo (the last 30 mins of the show was insanity.
