a lot of these (not all) were my first time seeing the band, and really turned me onto them. I've become big fans of a lot of bands because I saw them unknowingly at Roo and got into them after seeing them for the first time. for example Mars Volta, Toubab Krewe, and Tool (I knew who Tool was, but never listened to anything besides Sober and Schism before seeing them at Roo)

I think it is impossible to compare Coachella to Roo. Great bands at both fests (definitely many at Coachella I would love to see at Roo), but Roo itself (vibe, set lists, organization, collabs) and the latenights just push the shows way beyond what other festivals can do. Been to Coachella once in 07, as fun as it was, having done Roo already it did not stack up. IMO the epic sets and latenights give bands that may not be your ultimate number one's the chance to give you unbelieveble once in a lifetime shows an "amazing" artist couldn't pull off in a more confined festival and they will likely recreate the same show at another summer fest. To me just knowing you have 4 full days and nights of bands jammin with eachother, doing things they wouldn't normally do and getting the breathing room to do it makes every show better and I would easily pick a MMJ late night (especially followed by the Disco Biscuits) over Macca, RATM, Bjork.... Waters doing Dark Side is another story altogether! FRom my last two years alone I would put these above everything I saw at Coachella 2007.
1)Bruce (3.5 hrs) 2)My Morning Jacket late night 08 (almost 4hrs, wild covers and Kirk Hammet) 3)Phish - 4hr sunday set, jammin' with the Boss 4)Levon Helm 08 w Ramble on the Road 5)Broken Social Scene - 08 in sonic tent, other tent 6)Disco Biscuits 08 t'ill dawn 7)moe. late night 09 t'ill dawn 8)Raconteurs - extended Waht stage set 9)Femi Kuti 09 10)!!! 08

I will say this, Bonnaroo is the better festival because of the late nights as others have stated. However, with that said, I do not see any way possible it can be argued that Coachella's headliners don't blow Bonnaroo's out of the water pretty much every year. I mean it's not even an argument. Coachella wins that department hands down. I suppose each festival has its strengths and weaknesses. I love the late nights, that's why I keep choosing Bonnaroo, but it's pretty much the only reason.
I have gone the past two years, so my list consists of:
1. Pearl Jam 08 2. NIN 09 3. Phish 09 1st night 4. The Disco Biscuits 08 5. Bella Fleck and Toumani Diabate 09 6. The Mars Volta 09 7. Lupe Fiasco 08 8. Portugal. The Man 09 9. Tiesto 08 10. Beastie Boys 09

It is hard to narrow it down to just 10, but here they are in no particular order.
Snoop Dogg 09 Lez Zeppelin 2008 Pearl Jam 2008 Nine Inch Nails 2009 Jimmy Buffet 09 Girl Talk 09 Tenacious D 10 John Fogerty 10 John Butler Trio 10 Metallica 08

Not one show would be in my Roo Top 10. I thought this year lacked elite shows, but had the most very good to great shows ever. I don't think I saw one bad show, other than maybe Jay Electronica or Gaslight Anthem and they weren't that bad at all really.
Taken from my OP in a now irrelevant duplicate thread:
1. Nine Inch Nails 2. Radiohead 3. Tortoise, 07 4. Robert Plant & Allison Krauss w/ T Bone Burnett 5. Ornette Coleman 6. Jimmy Cliff 7. Jeff Beck 8. The Mars Volta, 09 9. Levon Helm and The Ramble On The Road 10. Beck 11. Public Enemy 12. DJ Shadow 13. Jay Z 14. Tool 15. Erykah Badu 16. Dungen 17. Sigur Ros 18. Daryl Hall & Chromeo 19. Neon Indian 20. Gov't Mule, 09 21. The Roots, 07 22. David Byrne, 09 23. Tom Petty 24. Al Green 25. Local Natives
More than honorable mentions: MMJ 08 and Mule 07 would be up there, but I only caught part of the sets. Also, MGMT in 08, Mastodon in 08, Junior Brown in 07, and MURS in 09.
1. MMJ '08 2. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band '09 3. Stevie Wonder '10 4. Wilco '09 5. LCD Soundsystem '10 6. Sigur Ros '08 7. The Raconteurs '08 8. The Avett Brothers '10 9. Portugal. The Man '09 10. John Fogerty '10

1. Radiohead 2. Tool 3. Neil Young & Crazy Horse TIED W/ Pearl Jam 08 4. moe.>Grace Potter>moe. 09 5. Jay-Z (I've had Empire State of Mind stuck in my head all week) 6. Widespread Panic 02 7. Phish friday night 09 8. Frogs 02 9. Black Crowes 05 10. Superjam 08
hon. mention: Mastodon 08 Metallica 08 Baroness 10 Melvins 10 Gogol Bordello 07 MMJ, every time they've played Flaming Lips, also every time Tom Petty Seu Jorge Dr. John Rod y Gab 07
My take on Bonnaroo vs. Coachella is that Bonnaroo takes risks and can make or break someone's career. What do you think Norah Jones would be doing without having played What Stage in 02? Probably accompanying undergrad voice majors at UNT. What do you think was the turning point of MMJ's career? Coachella panders to their fanbase. Bonnaroo challenges theirs. Oderus put it best: "People ask me why GWAR is playing to a bunch of hippies at Bonnaroo. I'll tell you why: because you guys are the only festival that has the quacking balls to book us, that's why!"
