I can't say i'm disappointed because I didn't have huge expectations for this, but its just a meh for me. The hip hop songs aren't any better than other stuff that's out there, most of my favorites off the album are Damon Albarn sang songs. The album also has no continuity for me, which also brings it down a little. I have only listened to it twice, but it doesn't seem like much of a grower. I'm not saying its bad, but its like a 6 or 7 for, maybe an 8 if it were a greatest hits album that isn't suppose to have a common thread. Not nearly as good as Demon Days for me, but seeing the guest artists its what I expected.

I listened to this again, and it just sounds stale to me. The first two Gorillaz albums had a pretty distinct sound and were a new sound, but this album is just all old news. I like the songs, but something like Glitter Freeze for example was good when Peaches did it 10 years ago and industrial and new wave bands did it 20 years ago. White Flag is a good track, but it sounds like something that could have come off Black Violin's st from 2007. Empire Ants is definitely my favorite track so far. I like the last two Pirate tracks, also (I have the japanese itunes version). If anyone has heard Saturday Come Slow off Massive Attack's new album featuring Damon I think that probably would have been a top 3 on Plastic Beach if it were a Gorillaz song. This album just seems like a step back for a band that has previously been pushing a new sound.
I have also seen a ton of people call this album of the year so far though, so I know I am in the minority here. Just doesn't seem like a Gorillaz album to me, more like a various artists album. Guest artist's tracks mostly sound like they came off one of that artist's albums. With that said I'd still love to see Gorillaz if I ever had the chance, and would definitely take them at bonnaroo, although that's not happening.

I like Glitter Freeze, it is one of the better songs off the album, but it could have come off a billion other artist's albums. I expect more out of the Gorillaz, at least after Demon Days which was one of the best albums of the decade and had an awesome sound of its own. That's the thing, I like the album, but I expected better from Gorillaz. Demon Days sounds like an album those cartoons made. Plastic Beach sounds like an album Damon Albarn with Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, Gruff Rhys, Lou Reed etc. made. Like I said though, I am clearly in the minority, and I am glad that TONS of people are really digging this album, and Gorillaz are finally getting some of the notice the bands always deserved.

When's the last time an album came out and we discussed it this much. It's pretty amazing.
Ziggy I can see where your coming from. I re-listened to S/T and Demon Days the other day right after listening to Plastic Beach for the tenth time seeing how it held up. The other two albums had a more diverse sound, but Plastic Beach still feels immediate to me. I can't remember the last album I listened to like this, maybe Veckatimest last year? Either way I'm still enjoying it, some of the tracks I didn't like as much like Broken and Sweepstakes are now stand outs.
i really like this album, but i have to agree with ziggy that my favorite songs are the Damon Albarn-sung ones. my favorites would have to be Broken, Emprie Ants, Rhinestone Eyes, On Melancholy Hill, and Pirate Jet
Ha. Not even fucking close. That said, if Eddy Grant is doing this to maybe get some of his back catalogue back on the front mind of djs, bravo. The songs themselves bare little resemblance to one another imo.
