Wasn't there a Bonnaroo tweet in reference to Jeopardy and crosswords? Because Merv Griffin created Jeopardy and a game show called crosswords. I'm going to dig around that hole for a few hours...

wow it seems like there are so many good ideas on the clues this year. im glad people are getting mad about the guessing. that takes all the fun out of it. maybe tomorrow he will put us in a direction with this one. was the jeopardy hint to this clue? im getting all confused now.

Oooh, good thinking with Edwin Starr, can't believe that didn't cross my mind! I think it's quite likely the clue refers to him somehow...but I still have no idea how to put it all together.

How about this? tweet "writer or wronger" - I'm taking that to mean it's a singer/songwriter rather than a band Before the star hatched - Edwin Starr hatched January 21, 1942. Before that would be 1941. is what is 2 times before I was - 2 times = 2x, so 1941 is 20 years before 1961. Lots of people were born in 1961, but Daniel Johnston was born on January 22, 1961 which is as close as it gets to Starr's birthday. It's also the date this clue dropped, not that that means anything.

i think the 20 years comes from 2x. so two times ten.
Maybe. IDK if we should use the word times to make a multiplication symbol and then use that multiplication symbol to represent 10. I have to admit though I am REALLY bad at math.

Anyboyd think our mystery clue reader might possibly be the winner of the book a band contest and this is pointing to who they picked? I know this doesn't really help us to figure out who it is but if nothing else it could give some idea how high or low on the lineup we should be thinking...
It's Beyoncé-Z. She's one of the 3 Destiny's Children, so she's the 3rd twinkling star of the group. (A twinkle in a father's eye is destined to become a child.) I think I've run this track into the ground.

It was a guy that won. Can't remember his name but I found him on facebook. Someone should friend him and get the scoop.

Here's my algebraic take on this clue............................ Before the star hatched is what is two times before I was If Edwin Starr was born on January 21, 1942 then before the star hatched = January 20, 1942. So the clue would be January 20, 1942 is what is two time before I was. If you look at time in days then it is saying that January 20 = 2 times (multiplier) the number of days before I was. 2 times 10 would get you 20. So January 20, 1942 is 2 times January 10 which is the day "before I was". So January 10, 1942 is the day "before "I was". The day we are looking for is then January 11, 1942. I hope this makes sense to someone else besides me and I know that Clarence Clemons was born on January 11, 1942. I know this makes some assumptions, but it seemed plausible. The "two times" in the clue just made me think of a math problem. Anyway, I wouldn't think Springsteen again, but maybe he would be there with someone else?? Who knows?
Why in the world is it automatically 2 x 10? That doesn't make any sense. Why not 9 or 8 or 11 or whatever? That's just throwing a random number out there. 2 times does not equal 2 x 10.

2 x 10 = 20, the 20 comes from the "before the star hatched (before Mr. Starr's birthday). His birthday is the 21st. "Before" that is the 20th. Twice something to get 20 would be 10 ( 2 times 10 = 20). This would give you January 10th, 1942. The clue says that this is before "I was". Add 1 to it to get to the actual day would give 11. Thus January 11th, 1942. 21-1 = 2y; y = 10 (the "before I was" from the second part of the clue); y = date - 1; date = 11th (i.e. the day for "I was"). The logic could be wrong, but that is where the numbers come from. Not claiming correctness, but like I said when I read the clue, it sounded like a math problem to me. To say "before" means a single day could definitely be way off track though. Just the way I was reading it.
The way the clue reads is that the first part (before the star hatched) is equal to (is what is) two times something else (two times before I was)............so I take that the the first part is twice that of the second part. If the first section is 20 then the second part would equal 10. 20 would be before 21 (the first part of the clue), 10 would be before 11 (the second part of the clue). If this actually gives an answer to a band; I'm not sure.

20 = xx, I believe. Would it be The xx. Could have been said before, but all this numbers talk made me think of them. They would seem to be a likely possibility.
Doesn't exactly follow my previous logic, but its feasible.
So those are my two contributions so far for potential guesses.......Clarence Clemons (Springsteen saxophonist) w/???? or The xx.

Ringo and his All-star band just announced dates for a summer tour, I believe it would begin a week after Bonnaroo. Could be a great way to kick off the tour.

Yeah, I thought about the possibilty of Clarence Clemons with Ringo Star and his All-Star band, but then I thought that might be too close of an answer related to the original clue. Could have been a long way around to get to the right answer, though? It's hard telling with any of these clues sometimes. I'm just trying to help. 99% of the time any thought I come up with has already been discussed. You guys and gals are all very quick impressive when it comes to Roo Kloos.
What if "before I was" focused only on Edwin Starr's birth year, i.e. instead of 1942, it's 1941, and "two times" is as stated above = 2X, where X=10, i.e. 20. 20 years before 1941 is 1921...I got a Feelin' '21 is gonna be a good year. Wishful thinking.
Before getting the "Star is not always spelled S T A R" and Mr Ed clues that led to Edwin Starr, djjd referred to Clue Z as "A whole new BRAND of clue" and said "help forthcoming after I have a nice drink off this beer". Perhaps this was a clue and a brand of beer would help bring this one home?
2 times = Dos Equis...or what about Bass Ale?
Flea played the bass on a cover of War by Bone Thugz n Harmony with Henry Rollins and Tom Morello.
More likely, Melvin Franklin sang bass vocal with the original Temptations who recorded the original version of War, before it was re-recorded by its "writer" Starr.
In continuing with my probably annoying (not my intent) streak of dead ends, here's an interesting note: Edwin Starr has two grandchildren named Alont'e Renfroe and Maryah Hatcher, per Wikipedia. In light of the previous suggestions about generations and DJJD's saying that guitarman was onto something, and remembering that this clue was given by a woman, could this point us to the grand daughter and ultimately to another Maryah...Mariah Carey?
