I have a bad habit of reading message boards, but never making contact and posting my own ideas. Given the current state of Roo fans and music fans everywhere, and the tons of negativity about the line up, I decided I would like to share my opinion on the matter, for what its worth. I want to be clear that I am not responding to the negativity only. I have no Roo colored glasses, nor am I a 2nd rate music fan who doesn't pass the authenticity code set by the jam band core. I did roo 04, as a junior in high school, say what you will. Main reason and by far best show was the Dead. Point being, I understand the roots argument. What I recently said to a fellow festie friend who is also hating hard on the line up, was that Hating something because it's popular is just as "bad" as liking a band bc they are popular. The impression I got from 04, which as lasted throughout, was that Bonnaroo was "our generation's" music festival. To all of the older folks, who went to the acid tests, who saw jerry's last show.... as much as I respect you all, and as jealous as I am of the experiences you have had, people really need to accept that this is the 2010 line up. This is not Woodstock. Like it or not, 2010 America IS overexposed, it IS corporate, and it IS popular. What I respect about Bonnaroo over other festivals, (been to plenty to compare) is that it embraces that.
If you want to hear widespread play 8 hours in a weekend (not that there is anything wrong with that) go to wanee. If you want to be with MK and ASH and the hipsters, go to coachella. If you want to rave, go to ULTRA. But please do not make the mistake of imposing your own personal music taste and expectations upon Roo. It is strange how people feel the need to prove themselves, or legitimize themselves based on their musical taste. Hippies are supposed to be open minded right? I guess what I am trying to say, is that I hope these are the headliners, not because I love dave, and not because I will be able to sleep and prepare for the obscure late nights that you won't be cool enough to know about....come on people. Perhaps I am a sell out because I don't need to see another Elizabeth Reed, or a phil and friends darkstar at bonnaroo to be satisfied, or perhaps I am comfortable enough with my own musical taste to proudly admit that I am just as excited for a possible stevie wonder norah jones song, as I am for thievery, deadmau5, edward sharpe!! the xx, joh prine, bassnectar, neon indian, she and him, nitty gritty dirt band....I could go on and on.... yeah, I could stand some more bluegrass, some dub step, any band member of the GD in any form, Warren Haynes...but I can go to a number of shows and fest at any point to see that. Furthur played in Charlotte last week. This is Bonnaroo. The music festival of the IPOD generation. and I love it. Please do not be selfish enough to expect Bonnaroo to give you your dream line up. Bonnaroo expects more from you than that.
im jealous that you have one post and now three heady points. crunch for you
best post i've read this year. i completely agree. so many people were disappointed by certain bands that were rumored to be there that currently arent that we've all stopped remembering why we love this festival so much. its completely about the music, but its also not about the music at all
its completely about the music, but its also not about the music at all
Crunchy for that sir. That is the best post I've read on this board in a long time. You should put that on a shirt; bet you'd sell the sh!t out of 'em.
awesome, thanks guys. I am excited I finally went for it...Had a little edge for the first post, but I was just frustrated. I mean, I totally acknowledge the changes. I went in 04, 05, and then not until 08. Roo had def. changed. went from camping with tree thuggers to frat guy football coaches, but shakedown is shakedown and no other festival's name is as primitive and glorious as yelling BBOOONNNAAARRROOOO!!!!
I'm so pumped. It works out for me personally bc my g/f is not the biggest bluegrass fan, but we unite on rap, reggae and electronica, and just great music so she can have her weezer and what not, and it works out for both of us. Jay Z will be great, just to stick it to Kayne. I hope he covers Kayne!! Ten D feels alot like the Chris Rock spot, which I freaking loved!!!
I guess I'm just liberal with music. I like change. I don't buy vinyl. lol.
But golly a string cheese reunion would be sweet eh?
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

guys, leave your bickering to a lesser thread,
to wmlee welcome, you def. hit the nail on the head, though many of us would love for it to be '69 or '92, its 2010. New Age, new music, new direction. I like holding onto the old stuff too, but the moment you rag on the popular stuff simply b/c its popular, you lose plenty of respect. Lets try to embrace the good music our generation gives us. The type of music that bonnaroo seems to do a pretty good job, year in and year out, of booking.
saw string cheese at rothbury last summer, can only say how epic it was, and would be damn welcome again at roo this year. but if not... lets embrace LCD and Thievery Corp, Bonnaroo newcomers!!!
Hi guys/gals. This is my first (technically 2nd post/ Top 10 Acts off Initial Lineup was my first, lol). I've been lurking this site for months and months and months now, and I must thank you ALL (yaysayers AND naysayers) for making the past 6 months entertaining! I have to agree with wmlee37, what he said is what I've been feeling since Tues when the lineup dropped. My initial reaction to the initial lineup was that something was empty/missing. Now I admit, I'm totally guilty of reading into the speculation a little TOO much and was really looking forward to Roger, or Neil, or MMJ, etc. So my initial take on the lineup was that we were short-changed by AC/Superfly.
After a day or so of pondering on this, I refused to give in to that emptyness and started to really look at all of the artists on this lineup individually. And I must say this is truly an amazing and diverse lineup. My first Roo was '08. That being said the one thing I learned from '08 is that albeit the headliners are the 3 big names of the weekend, Bonnaroo is all about the most amazing people and vibes. And I found this out EVERYWHERE I turned.
This year is gonna be great. There truly is a little of something for everyone's taste. I guess what I'm trying to convey is that yes, I can guarentee everyone in this forum can name one or two bands (maybe four or five, lol) that they don't care for (for me its KOL and Tori Amos). However I'm not gonna let that rain on the fact that for four days and nights I'm going to be able to enjoy soooooo many fantastic artists with sooooo many positive/awesome people.
Lets stay positive, focus on the good, and look forward to yet another amazing four days of music, friends, and one damn good party!!!
Honestly I don't think the majority of people hating on the line up are hating the fact that roo isn't a jamband festival anymore, in fact I believe that pretty much most people are over the fact that there aren't many jambands on recent line ups. People who want to see jambands and jambands only pretty much gave up on roo a while ago due to the multitude of festivals that cater to that scene like all good, waka, summer camp, mtn jam to name a few.

You and Bonnaroo have embraced the sellout. Typical. Of course Bonnaroo as a successful corporate organism has money flowing through its veins. It *has* to sell to continue to exist. You can plug current music sales, radio play, availability and some pertinent demographics into a spreadsheet and get Bonnaroo's headliners. You feel like embracing that because that is who you are, and Bonnaroo knows it. You are the data plot of your digital self. That's cool you can't help it. None of us can help it. We provide the data used to take advantage of us. "What's that spell?"
Woodstock was analog and was bolstered by the record sales of a vastly different system. Revolution was in the air; antiwar protest and counterculture expressionism was on the major record labels. Popular music shaped and was shaped by tremendous cultural turmoil. Woodstock was burned into the national psyche as a cultural landmark. Bonnaroo is at most an annual vacation catered to iPodestrians. "What's that spell?"
Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Superfly purchased music sales data for the Atlanta and east coast region from Apple to iTune their headliners. Same for Coachella, except they're catering to the musical tastes of L.A. and southern California. Welcome to the digital heard. "What's that spell?"

Bonnaroo expects more from ME than that? excuse me? I think there is some much needed negativity here. I'm the one paying or, well, WILLING to pay 300 dollars for a ticket and drive half way across the country. I, the fan, deserves a quality festival experience. This year, unless some major additions come, will not be a quality experience unless you live in a frat house, then perhaps Kings of Leon and "Dave" will be a really good time. I don't know why everyone on this board feels the need to show brand loyalty to this festival when there is an overwhelming number of acts that won't be welcomed. The only thing holding my curiosity to Bonnaroo this year is The Flaming Lips playing Darkside as well as a few smaller acts like Dan Deacon and the slim chance that My Morning Jacket might be added. You're correct in your acknowledgement of 2010 being just a shitty time in history, but I expect some people to not be so passive about it. Quit playing devil's advocate for this ridiculous lineup.
I've been trying to convince my friends for three straight years to go to this with my girlfriend and I, but this year they actually know what they're missing. Sure, they'll be lots of fun party favors, but no amount of anything could take my mind off of how much I hate the sound of Dave Mathews voice. I could never be drunk enough or stoned enough to not think the Kings of Leon look like the Jonas Brothers and sound like just as much of a product. and Tenacious D? I found Jack Black's humor something I could relate to in the 5th grade. WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE SO AFRAID OF BEING HONEST WITH YOURSELVES? WHY ARE YOU SO AFRAID TO ANGER THE BONNAROO GODS? ACCEPT THIS BLASPHEMY AND ADMIT THAT THIS IS A WASTE OF MONEY!!

You are correct that KoL and DMB are lame, but the rest of this lineup has many redeeming qualities in my eyes. While I only partially agree with your words, sir, I do like your username. Welcome to the boards.

Or you could simply not pay the money since you assume it will be a crappy experience anyway. Go to another festival this summer that suits your needs. Bonnaroo is not the only one.

That seems a little closed-minded to me. Do frat boys love Dave Rawlings Machine, Dr. Dog, Flaming Lips, and the Black Keys too?
