Anchor Drops is the best place to start as far as studio albums. It is important to check out some good live stuff too. My favorite live umphrey's that i have is not labeled in any way but live at the murat is pretty good. also look at their youtube videos. they do some awesome covers. example: jake cinninger's guitar work is great: --http://btjunkie.org/search?q=umphrey*s+mcgee

www.archive.org/details/um2008-10-31..flac16 Their 08' Halloween set. Not very similar to what their normal sets are like anymore, but is probably pretty close to what we would get for a late night set.

I'm a big fan of their covers. These are from 08/09 NYE run.
Amazing Grace/Glory mashup . I shed a tear the first time I heard this. Glory is my favorite UM song.
The next two I witnessed the one and only time I've seen UM. It was the first time they played this song live.
Part two
For the record, I wouldn't call them a jam band at all. They are straight prog rock to me. It'd be like calling Pink Floyd a jam band. Sure, they jam, but not like Phish, Mule, Moe, etc...

I see where you're coming from......but then how do we define what makes a jam band and what doesn't? If "jamming" doesn't necessarily make you a jam band then what does?
Both Um and Phish do improvisational stuff right? Is it because Phish and Moe. aren't as heavy as Umphrey's?
How would you define jam band? Keep in mind I'm not saying you're wrong......I just find it interesting how different people feel about what makes a band a "jam band".

Umph's is a jam band...their jams just sound tighter than other bands, bc they're so friggin in tune with each other. Their jams sound like songs.
And I can't call them straight prog rock...that's just one genre they attempt...recently, obviously with Mantis, they've begun to explore that genre the most...but they can literally delve into any genre...their new songs are pretty much straight funk, ive been hearing.

After reading these posts, I will agree that they jam. It is definitely more precise than , say Phish. The hand signals are what throws me off of a true jam band. I don't know. When I watch Phish, I can tell that they just feel the jam. When watching UM it is calculated. It's not a bad thing at all. Ziggy has it right....Prog-Jam. Mabe we should just stop putting bands into genres.
Point is they freaking rock and put on an amazing show. ummmmm...have they even been confirmed yet?

No real confirmation, but I am always down for giving Umph some love. Looking at the lineup I could definitely see them having a late night set, but that's just a gut feeling.
i don't see the point of a person going to such great lengths just to quack with people they haven't/will never meet. i am aware that its somewhat commonplace on boards like this, but he wasn't one of those guys who has a "friend" who talked to a roadie or anything like that. the picture even had bleed through from print on the other side, and the story seems plausible. i didn't expect to find any info about the show on um tour dates, but i have also looked at sewanee (university of the south) news papers and music/entertainment calendars online and haven't found anything pointing towards umphrey's playing there. there is a tasty schedule gap between wakarusa and all good, space for them to play the sewanee thing, and they are going to be in ozark arkansas the week before bonnaroo. this thread is the only source for umphrey's playing bonnaroo but at this point i feel very strongly we will be getting a much needed umphrey's set.
the article said April 23rd... If im not mistaken, UMbowl (Chicago) is the 24th
