i've said it before but i would be willing to bet this top 5 of the lineup is the most expensive they have ever booked. and that would explain why 6-20 is not as good as usual.

A lot goes into it too so it's kind of tricky to tell the costs. Sometimes artists are low balled, other artists want more, some are flexible on price some aren't. But I would think that from my knowledge of the prices of artists that I have seen and from conversations from my contacts and what I know that...(leaving out Conan since I have no idea what he's actually really doing with the whole MC thing and what not...cancel him out with Fallon let's say...) Bruce > DMB (Bruce but probably by as much as you would think) Phish > KOL (Phish way more but also remember they played two shows) B Boys < Stevie (Stevie way more) NIN < Jay Z (NIN was only about $200k on that last tour if I remember while Jay I would think is $500k to $800k) Byrne/Tenacious D Toss Up Wilco < Weezer Al Green/Flaming Lips Toss Up Snoop > Dead Weather Elvis Costello > Nas/D Marley Badu < Phoenix Oakenfold < Norah Jones
Not sure if this helps clarify anything but they didn't low ball this year as much as people belive... I mean I think honestly they just wrote the poster wrong and people would be a lot less p'od if it read... Jay Z Stevie Wonder Dave KOL (and of course MMJ instead of Weezer!)

No that would not have helped very much. Also I seriously doubt Jay-Z is getting half a million for one set. Also Bruce plays huge venues vs DMB, and charges way more per ticket so I have a feeling they spent quite a bit more on him. However for a fair breakdown lets look at this way.
Friday
KOL<Phish probably 250k vs 750k first show Phish LN headliner
Sat Bruce > Stevie I do not know what Stevie charges, but he plays 30,000 seat theaters Bruce plays huge arenas. So I am guessing way more.
Sunday
Phish > DMB once again by quite a bit, though they play similar venues, the Phish exclusivity at festies more than likely had a premium on it.
Various
B Boys = Jay-Z, both are big more than likely made about 300 - 500k
NIN > Conan I doubt Conan is commanding that huge a salary for one day MC ing and one comedy show.
David Byrne > than Tenacious D by quite a bit I am sure.
Weezer = Wilco I imagine do not really know though, I doubt Weezer makes that much once again based on venue size.
Al Green < Flips but by less than you think.
When you break it down this way by lineup position I am pretty sure you can say they spent quite a bit more this year vs last.

Everything you said before that indicates they spent way more in 09 than 10. In any case, I think naturalrudd's estimates are more accurate, and they spent about the same each year.

I meant to say more money last year, and I don't what makes you think his made up numbers are better than mine. I am just mostly estimating on ticket prices and venue size.

sounds like he actually knows what he's talking about. you admittedly are just guessing.

Of course I admit I am guessing whereas he first off counted both Phish shows as one expense vs the cheapest headliner, and secondly seemed to think you could book a NIN farewell tour show for 200k, and lets not forget the 800k for Jay-Z. All of which make me assume he was also guessing, I do not work in the "biz" but I have a fair idea of how to guesstimate shows cost based on venue size and ticket price. and if you break it down like I did in lineup position vs lineup position it certainly makes it a lot more clear. Really I think it is funny lets compare one more time and you tell me what cost more.
Phish Vs Kol
Stevie Vs Bruce
DMB vs Phish
Beasties vs Jay Z (remember Beasties play 45,000 seat venues Jay Z just played at the 12,000 seat Memorial Gym at Vandy)
NIN Vs Conan
Tenacious D vs David Byrne
Weezer vs Wilco
Al Green vs Flips.
So really man between those what do you think cost more money?

Also I seriously doubt Jay-Z is getting half a million for one set.
When Jay-Z played the end of the year concert in spring of 09 at the University of Arizona he was payed 750,000. That was for a set shorter than he usually pays. Plus most artists charge less for University shows. I seriously doubt Jay-Z is getting payed less than 750,000 probably more like 800,000-900,000
Beasties vs Jay Z (remember Beasties play 45,000 seat venues Jay Z just played at the 12,000 seat Memorial Gym at Vandy)
That may be the case, but the majority of his shows are in coliseums and arenas. ie. Conseco Fieldhouse, Madison Square Garden, Pepsi Arena, etc.)
Jay-z gets at least 500k for a show, I'm about positive. I don't think they Beasties are far behind, but Jay-Z is the biggest hip hop act in the world and gets paid accordingly.
I think 09 may have been more expensive, but not by much. Yes Bruce and Phish are high dollar acts, but Stevie gets his share and KoL, while new are a "big deal" and I'm sure they aren't getting slighted.

Like I said he played the Vandy Gym which holds >14000, at 40-65 a ticket I doubt they gave him every penny of the ticket money for that one. Here is the most likely reason no one pays him that anymore the students lost 900,000 on that particular show. I doubt AC/Superfly thinks he will sell 3/4 of a million dollars worth of tickets for them.
Ok here is his concert rider for that show that lost all the money for those kids, sounds like if he just took regular transportation from the Tullahoma airport we could have the Art of Such n Such back....

True, but the real reason they lost so much money was that the concert was horribly planned, organized, and promoted. I won't go into everything they did wrong but it was obvious the people running it had no idea what they were doing. Booking Jay-Z for 750,000 was probably the smartest decision they made in the whole process.

Not when he only sold enough tickets to pay for Soundtribe, it wasn't.[/quote]
My point was that they only made stupid decisions. The way they ran the event had a lot more to do with the fact ASUA (the student organization that ran the event) is now broke than did booking Jay-Z for 750,000.

Not his fault they didn't promote enough or house the event in a venue where they could sell enough tickets to pay for the event. There wasn't really any negotiating here, I'm sure they offered Jay-Z his quote and he accepted.

I don't claim to know anything about how much artists get paid or anything related to this type of stuff, but I am curious, what arenas hold 45,000 people? Did you mean to say stadium? Some of the newer arenas that are being built might hold a tad over 20,000. Even when you add in the floor, I'm pretty sure they are nowhere near 45,000.

Reading that list makes me want to punch Jay-Z in the f-ing face...and I'm actually a fan. That sort of entitlement just makes my blood boil. You're a fucking multi-millionaire, buy your own damn PB&J.

I had him in the running for a bit of my late night. I was really going to spend some time I could watch a legitimately good late night band watching him. I honestly just wanted to look on here and see some sort of possible schedule as to prep myself for the conflicts. Well I'm glad I don't need to spend time now deciding between some terd sandwich and anybody else. Holy God, I can't believe that stage use to be saved for people like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Oysterhead, the Allman Brothers and the Dead. I'm glad that the organizer of Bonnaroo likes to "save money" when he can. I know that Panic, SCI, Radiohead and Phish all cost a good amount, but... some of the stuff on that rider can only be saved for people who will tell their great grandchildren that they did it all for the money and status. And I bet you I'm the most capitalist person who looks here besides Ashley Capps.
According to the "Phish Security Procedures Manual," the group's followers are a "peaceful, intelligent group" who don't like to be bullied and, while it might sound crazy to some--also like to "dance and twirl." But we're puzzled about all those late-arriving fans: What's there to do in the parking lot before a concert?
honestly after reading the Jay-Z rider I was expecting much more ridiculous requests. Access to nice vehicles for him and his posse makes sense (you'd think it was weird if one of the biggest rappers alive DIDN'T arrive in a blacked-out SUV) and all he wanted in the dressing room was some easily obtainable food and some nice alcohol

thats how most musicians are now, some of the things in the past ive seen on different sights go from crazy to insane. i remember there was one that required a bowl of m&ms, but all of one color had to be removed from it. some acts ask for some crazy(and expensive stuff), but honestly as long as they go out and perform to their best of their ability for the crowd, thats all we can ask for.

So the M&M thing was Van Halen, but actually it was just an easy way for them to make sure that the whole rider had been followed.
As to his rider and how standard it is Maybach US sales by year are listed below, yeah I bet providing a black late model on of these for him was real easy, and inexpensive everyone gets one.
