I got home last night and listened to Funeral from cover to cover for the first time in about nine months. And, naturally, I became really upset afterwards - but in that 'maybe there's some hope at the end of the tunnel... but probably not' way I always get after listening to it. And then I got even sadder when I realized that they're playing a sold out show in Boston this Sunday and I don't have tickets.
Neon Bible, while still not on the same level as Funeral, was still a worthy effort in my view. When a band debuts with such an emotionally charged tour-de-force that ends up becoming one of the best-regarded albums of the decade, there's going to be a ton of pressure to live up to it on the sophomore album. For me, Funeral tells a story, and each song has a purpose and a place. Neon Bible was more like a collection of good (though maybe not great) songs without as much of a coherent structure as its predecessor.
I was a hipster-hater before being a hipster-hater was cool. I just don't find the need to be the first to everything all the time like those other hipster-haters. Being last is the new being first. Being willingly uncool is the new being cool. Post-post-post-irony.
I have to admit that I checked Pitchfork at 1 AM last night because I was anxiously awaiting to see what they gave The Suburbs. 8.6. Good score, but a little disappointing. I like Ariel Pink, but no way their new record (which got a 9.0) is better than The Suburbs.

Agreed, but I thought the review was spot on and very well written, less the lower rating.
^^How does that statement show me to be a hipster? Please explain.
Everybody knows the new hip hipster reaction to Arcade Fire is, "they just seem kind of uninspired since Funeral. Feel like they need to have some deaths in the family to make another good album."
if you were watching the livestream on youtube there is no way you can't agree that they would bring it at bonnaroo. just spectacular. and the great thing is, i've seen them twice at ACL and they performed with the same enthusiasm and once was in broad daylight.
not just Win...several of 'em had that funky 'do. but hey, I don't love 'em for their hairstyles. damn, that show was amazing! I cannot wait to see them next week in Atlanta!
mmm i still feel like you need more than just an awesome live show/epic talent.
i still just dont see them headlining, they are not as big of a commercial draw as: Kings of Leon, DMB, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Bruce, Phish, Pearl Jam, Metallica, etc etc

^ arcade fire have played top of the pops, Letterman, and did the Grammy's with Bowie. I'd say thats a pretty good showing of their commercial viability.
I've only been listening to AF for a couple of months but everything I've heard has been really entertaining. I would love to see them late night.
Went to their show at MPP last night. Completely and totally mind-blowing. Nothing less than rapturous. After attending that show and seeing how totally into it the crowd was, not only could I see them headlining at Bonnaroo, I can't picture them doing anything LESS than headlining.
We also saw them at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. it was a fun show, I especially wanted to see Spoon. This was our first time seeing Arcade Fire and I can say I was impressed with their performance. They each must burn 5,000 calories during their show. I do not know about the headline spot but maybe late night on Witch Stage.

Letterman books tons of bands, playing Letterman does not grant you Headliner status. I think i saw the Steep Canyon Rangers play Letterman...
The Grammy's also book artists who aren't headliner material, Zac Brown Band played last year and we all know they didn't headline.
I'm less familiar with Top of the Pops, because it's British, but there you go: it's British, and so doesn't really pertain to an American Fest. Besides, didn't TofP just do a weekly thing where that week's top act performed? I would imagine that means a lotttt of acts have played it, few of them worthy of headlining
Like I said, after witnessing how many people were so into their show at Merriweather, I cannot imagine them playing the Which Stage; they'd have to play What. And I can't see them as pre-headliners, either. Maybe, as NoD said a late night What set a la Jay-Z this year, but I see them headlining if they play this year (and they need to play this year).
I don't care where, how, or why, I just want Arcade Fire on the farm. If Bonnaroo saved money specifically for the 10th anniversary lineup, then I see no problem with them 4th on the bill. Then I can see a Late Night Which or Pre-Headliner What, or maybe closing out the Which Stage.
