Ha...I knew something odd was afoot. I just thought you'd decided to be nicer and more logical in arguments, but I should've known it was all AWATD's gf.
Here this one is better, and the fact that no one will like it will not make it less true. When I think back to a musician who has created or at least brought to huge mainstream popularity a specific genre, has had huge commercial success that puts him in the top 5 selling artists of all time, who pretty much called it quits at the height of his popularity, and who as recently as last week was able to sell out 6 consecutive nights at our local 18k seat arena in just one day. There is only one person who comes to mind, he is not for me but he fits all these criteria.
The one and only Garth Brooks, people under thirty have no idea how huge he was among pretty much every demographic for a long time. MJ is another one, but honestly at least in my generation brooks was a much bigger phenomenon

^It is not great either, but while racking my mind for another band who accomplished the same things as the Beatles his was the only one that I could really come up with.

So I gather that we are not just speaking of "bands" per se, rather are also including artists? MJ is a shoe in then.
Additionally, I see your Prince and raise you a Madonna. This thread is a bit of a sausage fest as it is, it could use some more boobies.
In all reality, as music lovers with some broad base knowledge of the various genres of the art, we could unbiasedly come up with a list of approx 10+/- artists/bands and concur on all of them.(That is if we are taking seriously the momentous task of naming the 'best band since the Beatles' and not just piddle-farting around here to bridge the time gaps).
The Beatles were truly socially and culturally relevant and resculptured the landscape of the art of music. They intertwined nearly every style of music and were able to weave a tapestry of sound that permeated all social classes, ethnicities, nations and generations. My seven year old can sing you a Beatles' song, my 93 year old grandmother can sing you a Beatles' song, my Croatian neighbor could likely sing you a Beatles' song. They have mass appeal, they have longevity, they have had remarkable influence. They were truly geniuses of their craft.
Granted they had plenty of stepping stones as well (primarily African-American inspired rhythm and blues and rock and roll, yet I digress). However, they truly were pioneers of music, and influenced the art through and through. They are one of few bands that, if you were to ask an R&B artist, a jazz artist, a punk rocker, an alt rocker, a jam band artist, a classical musician and beyond, you could almost count on them listing The Beatles as an inciting factor in their musical careers.
That being said, which bands of our generation(ish), will honestly hold up to that litmus test?
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
I still remember when my favorite high school teacher, my 11th grade English teacher who happened to be a 70-year-old white woman, told the class a month after its release that "Hey Ya" was the best, freshest, most interesting and unique song she'd heard in at least 10 years. I realize that that is technically an Andre 3000 song, but you get the point.
Just look at all the facets of Prince's music... the musicality, the instrumentation, the arrangements, the lyrics, the style, the cultural impact, the vocals, the wide accessibility, the longevity... no one can match it.

I can totally get on board with Prince as a possibility. He's brilliant as both a producer and musician, and sorely underrated. I'd definitely put him on a 'top 10 possibilities' list.

Prince has had so many backing bands over the years. He's definitely an iconic musical artist, but E Street has been together for parts of 5 decades. They might not be the best band to rise up since The Beatles ended, but they are one of my favorites from The States.
