This is Happening might be my favorite record of the year. Definitely in my top three. I don't know how anyone could hate it.
Probably the one I was most disappointed with was either MGMT's Congratulations or Band of Horses' Infinite Arms. I like both, and they've grown on me the more I've listened to them, but they could've been better.
Honestly, this has been a really good year for music. Much better than 2009.

This is Happening was pretty good, but I will say there were a couple moments on the album that didn't do it for me at all. Some songs were great though so I wouldn't say it was disappointing.
I'll agree with Drake's being a huge disappointment. Dude had more buzz than any emerging rapper in a long time and probably for a long time and actually had me thinking he was going to be a new personal favorite for the modern era. CRASH! So much for that idea. I will admit there are some good moments for the album, I can still enjoy some of his R&B joints, but his rapping was over hyped and has done nothing but disappoint recently. Fireworks & Resistance are just ok, Karaoke, Up all Night, Shut it Down, and Unforgettable(mostly because of Jeezy) are all cool, but after that its all very forgettable.
Can't think of what else let me down this year, at the moment. I'm sure some will come to me sooner or later.
1. M.I.A.'s Maya - Feels like someone trying to hard to get you to stop listening to her music.
2. Sufjan's Age of Adz - An aggressively weird album. Don't get me wrong. I love aggressively weird, but not when it mostly comes off as someone who's been playing too much Super Mario Bros in his spare time.
3. Crystal Castles's second album - An aggressively annoying album. In many ways, it serves as a great companion piece for Maya. There are hooks there buried beneath the need to blow out the speakers and hurt your ears.
4. Menomena's Mines - I loved Friend and Foe. I found myself completely indifferent to the more rock oriented follow up. I could be wrong but it felt like Brent Knopf was largely missing in action on this one compared to the previous effort.
5. B.o.B.'s The Adventures of Bobby Ray - So I got turned onto B.o.B. through his eclectic promising mixtapes and while I didn't expect a masterpiece on his first try, I didn't expect an album this gratingly obnoxious. Most rappers work on their craft slowly building a fan base on word of mouth. Some get lucky and have a producer or established rapper champion them. Others get a bunch of terrible pop stars to guest on their records and make rap so inane you have expect Will Smith to make an appearance.
Honorable Mention People's Reaction to the new Kanye West album. I expected people to like it. People seem to like every piece of Leno he's put out so far. But I didn't expect people to think this unimaginative piece of dog Leno was a masterpiece. But let me allow Kanye to do the talking for me:
That is the work of a genius who's matured into masterpiecedom. Allegedly.

Yeah, me too. I felt the same way about Stay Positive. Just don't know if they can match Boys & Girls again. That's a high standard to live up to, IMO.
2. Sufjan's Age of Adz - An aggressively weird album. Don't get me wrong. I love aggressively weird, but not when it mostly comes off as someone who's been playing too much Super Mario Bros in his spare time.
I thought this at first, but then I saw the music live and the album has blown me away since. Seems to have happened to a lot of people.

That's a little comforting. I am not digging this album at all.

I'd also like to second The Hold Steady. Massive disappointment. And their live show has declined considerably as well. One of my favorite bands in the world until recently. Not that I don't still love them, they just don't have the same place in my heart that they had before.

I don't want to generalize here but I will. Most hardcore Sufjan fans I know would jizz their pants if he came out on stage and had a chorus of hipsters pull down their pants and fart into trumpets.

Same here, I was definitely let down by the most recent album. I was still interested in seeing them live, but a friend told me the live show was terrible. I still listen to them, but have lost some interest lately.
My biggest disappointment has been mentioned, but Band of Horses really let me down. As for Sufjan, love the album, one of my favorites of the year. Like NoD said, seeing it live gives you a different impression of the album.

im shocked that people were disappointed by Congratulations. i thought it was one of the top albums of year, and a vast improvement on their first album.
for once a band with obvious talent decided to give the finger to the studio and the masses and abandon their pop sound to explore a more creative and artistic approach. yeah, there wasnt a hit single like Kids or Time to Pretend but the music was so much deeper and intelligent. Siberian Breaks was a fucking masterpiece. honestly reminded me of a modern-day floyd (not at all comparing the two on a talent level, just comparing the similarities in style and how different the material sounds amongst the rest of the music being made today)

I see a lot of shows, and while I love Sufjan's music, I was going in ready to be disappointed, but he put on a great show. He was really enthusiastic about the new music and it all sounded incredible.

I agree. At first I did not really know how to react to this album but after a few listens it really grew on me and is probably in my top 10 for the year.
I'll wasn't into the new Hold Steady, at all. Add American Slang and Infinate Arms in there as well. 3 of my favorite bands and a waste on all of them.
I have a feeling that The Sword's "Warp Riders" is disappointed that it's not getting more attention for being awesome than it is.
But as for the most disappointING albums of the year, I think I'd go with:
- I'll co-sign on "Infinite Arms" by Band Of Horses being a disappointment. I saw them live in May and they were phenomenal - reinforced my fandom and made a believer out of the people I was with. I was stoked on the new album and it just...let me down.
Good morning sunshine!
This is awesome! Will it help move them out of this category?
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

after everybody hyping kanye's new album as best album ever, i finally listened to it and i wasnt really impressed. his tracks do have some nice beats, but way sub-par rapping. i feel like his rapping gone downhill since college dropout and now he raps about random bs. people just hyped it up way too much. decent beats, meh lyrics
also, 2 albums i saw listed that i actually enjoyed
this is happening - LCD soundsystem congratulations - mgmt (very different from their earlier work, but still good)

Fair enough. There are definitely albums whose production I hated that I warmed to eventually on the strength of the songwriting (Neon Bible being the most recent example I can think of). I just wish Sufjan would trust his songwriting a little more and save the off center arrangements for the live show.
