I was marveling about the deceptive simplicity of Give Up the Ghost. I think this song illustrates the growth of the band. Before they would manipulate Thom Yorke's voice to break apart the melody. Here they use it to reinforce it. It's really quite a beautiful arrangement.
Also, is that a xylophone I hear underneath the guitar?
my list: 1. codex 2. lotus flower/give up the ghost/seperator/little by little 3. morning mr magpie/bloom/feral
its impossible to rank them. this album is groundbreaking, whether you want to admit it or not. this sounds familiar, but this is a new realm of radiohead. i love it. and i wanted to see if i could compare it to their old albums, and i was reminded of how perfect every one of them has been. radiohead is far too good. when is the tour??
How can one be familiar with something that is new? Are you asking whether or not I'm confusing immediacy with greatness or are you commenting more on the desire to paint past Radiohead as superior just because we are familiar with it and comfortable with the way its Radiohead-ness sounds?
Just talking about how r thinks we need 3 months of constant listening to determine how good an album is. Maybe your first listen isn't always indicative of how great an album is, but you don't need 50 to tell the quality of an album. I think a lot of times people continue to listen to something by their favorite band and end up proclaiming it as great, when really their 10th impression of the album was right.
All the numbers are obviously arbitrary. Just trying to illustrate my point.
Yeah...it goes both ways, though. Sometimes, albums are so complex or have so many little intricacies that numerous listens (in some cases, a lot of them) are required to fully understand or appreciate the album. It's part of how you grow as a listener, hearing something you'd never heard before in a song you've heard 20 times before.
God, I hate Pitchfork reviews sometimes. This got a 7.9, and the review summarized is basically, "the album is 8 fantastic tracks, but I read some message boards and some people don't like it so it's not 'game-changing'"
