Where do I begin with these guys? Always wanted to get into them, never got the chance.
Anywhere really. They've got 3 studio albums but they are all really good and released within a year or two of each other so it's not like there's a huge change in sound.
On the first page I posted a link to a 16 track mix featuring songs from each album as well as a handful of live songs. Check that out.....then look into the albums if you like any of it.

Ok its real simple. anytime you want to start getting into a new band you should probably buy thier first album. that is unless you just want to youtube them but this group is good and have some cool meaningful songs< just listen to the first album > that has always helped me
Couldn't post the brand new songs per their manager, but what's there is excellent - including a few Middle Brother songs, covers and other stuff. Check it out. Can't wait to see them on the farm, they put on a great show

Awesome thanks.........any chance if you can recall the new songs being called "Hope is Big" or "Bury Deep"? Those two are awesome. Lots of good tunes here. I wanted to see the John/Ian show that came near me but couldn't afford it.
I might be the only one who doesn't like the Chuck Berry cover, I preferred their cover of Breakdown
I personally like it. In the recording I posted they have the drummer a little off with his timing when shouting "ho!" and "ha!" into the mic but when I saw them play it live it was great.

Sorta/kinda off topic but I just got my Middle Brother album (the band featuring John from Deer Tick, Matt from Delta Spirit, and Taylor from Dawes) and it's pretty awesome. This song in particular has great lyrics.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear one or two of these songs at Roo. The last two times i've seen them they played some Middle Brother tunes.
I'm really looking forward to this show. I saw them at Exit Inn here in Nashville a few months ago and it was great. I really hope they're going to be playing on Thursday night

From a new interview/article online:
Since songwriter John McCauley founded Deer Tick in 2004, the rollicking folk-rock band best known for its go-big-or-go-home live performances has gone from from releasing cassettes to performing on 'Letterman.' Spinner talked with songwriter and guitarist Ian O'Neil, who joined the group in 2009, about their love for the road (all five members have been touring since high school), the search for spontaneity in live performance and why the band's next record will be its best yet.
It seems like you all are on the road quite a bit these days. How do you maintain the pace?
We tour probably more than we're home. That's kind of the model we followed last year. This year is a bit different because we're going to start recording a new record in April, and our drummer Dennis [Ryan] is getting married this year, so more one-off shows and a couple tours. Mostly it's a little bit slower because we're concentrating to make sure we can make a really good record.
Touring can definitely wear on you. We're all in steady relationships and enjoy home life, but we are addicted to touring because we've been doing it all of our young adult lives so far. It's just been a part of our lives, and we can't go very long without playing music together. We really enjoy playing for people.
Focusing on touring means focusing on live performance. What goes into a live show?
Without a doubt it's an extension of our creativity as musicians. Music starts with the writing process and recording is a document of that. With performance, there's more opportunity and more room for improvisation and taking chances. The songs change pretty much every time you play them. We have no reservations about letting that happen. We also really like to entertain people. We just feel out the show so people will have a good time. [Playing live is] realizing that for us, personally, it's a big part of the identity of this band. It's one of our strongest suits as a band. We're very comfortalbe being on stage.
You guys are known for pulling out covers. What are your favorites?
We do a ton of different songs. Sam Cooke songs recently, it's been a staple to play 'La Bamba,' do a song by Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, the Replacements. They're songs we really like at the moment and we'll just pull it out and see if it works. There are even times where we have no rehearsal, and we'll just jump into it at the show and follow each other.
How far along is the new record?
The songs are all pretty much done, except some will be finished in the studio. We have a backlog of songs. We'll bring them all to the table and see which ones we want.
We have high hopes for this next record. It'll be our best record and hopefully that'll translate to people. We just want to keep getting better as a band and as writers. Whatever success comes of it, well, great. I think it's incidentally going to be a pretty accessible record. We started writing songs and we started to realize that we were writing a really catchy record with a lot of rock songs. It'll be a fun record.
Who's the primary songwriter?
Up until the last year, it's strictly been John writing songs. When he asked me to join the band, he asked me if I wanted to bring songs to the band. I'll have songs on the next record. Dennis has some songs he wants to bring. It's extended to everybody to bring what they can and pick the best songs. It'll be the greatest hits of what we've written in the past year.
Deer Tick was strictly DIY when it began. Is it still that way?
We definitely have people who work for us. Basically, what we do is concentrate on making the music as good as it can be. The business side is kind of a drag, but if it's necessary -- and it seems to be totally necessary if you want to have a sustainable band -- we're like Sam Cooke: we do our best to surround ourselves with people who know how we feel and know what we want. We've been fortunate to have people working for us who are great at what they do, and people work with us as a band. Sometimes it's hard to find people who actually want to work with a band. We have a great lawyer and great manager, a great booking agent, all these people who can get a ton of more money from other artists. They can work with other people who can bring them a lot more, but because we have such a great working relationship, they just want to look out for our best interests.
Is music life?
It's definitely the only thing I've ever wanted to do. That's the case for everybody in the band. It's something I've wanted to do as a kid and started doing when I was really young. In middle school and high school, I knew I wanted to tour and write songs and make music and subsist on touring. That came quicker than I expected -- all of us started touring [in different bands] in high school. It was the most fun thing to do. No adult supervision -- you get to play music every night and travel around the country.

This thread is so full of win. I saw DT for the first time last summer outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Talk about a stressful venue to play. They destroyed though. I'd never heard them before that night but thats all it took to convert me into a devoted fan. Black Dirt Sessions is a beyond fantastic album
Really really happy that Roo has once again introduced me to such a great band. They are like a more grimey Dylan. Have been checking out War Elephant alot recently and always can tell when Baltimore Blues No. 1 comes on... its stuck out thus far.

Can't wait! I saw them in Phoenix last year after listening to War Elephant and Born on Flag Day a few hundred times - their live show just doesn't compare to headphones on my iPod, they work very very well together. Stellar band.

This bonnnaroo was made for me IMO. I've been waiting for Deer Tick to come to Roo......also been dying to see MMJ, Black Keys, Cold War Kids back on the farm. Plus it'll be my first time seeing Eminem, only time seeing Buffalo Springfield (been wanting Neil to show up on the farm since I started going in 05) and a first-time show of Arcade Fire.
then there's a few dozen other bands i'm dying to see.

This lineup really is amazing. I have liked literally almost every band that Ive checked out so far.... its actually almost too good of a lineup, I fear conflicts a-plenty
I fear a conflict of Primus, My Morning Jacket, Superjam, Deer Tick. Any of those conflicts are troublesome. Here's hoping they can sub in String Cheese for one of those. Because I'm not really a fan.
Going to see Deer Tick tomorrow with Middle Brother and Dawes. Hope to get some videos. Will post about the show after.
I saw the opening night of the tour in DC a couple nights ago.
Deer Tick was fantastic as usual. It was great to hear more of Black Dirt Sessions this time. I can't wait to hear Mange at Roo, that song rips live.
That interview with Ian was great, and I'm very excited about his expanded role on the next record. The new songs he has been playing are great.
I was a little underwhelmed with Middle Brother. As a three singer/songwriter group, it is hard not to compare it to Monsters of Folk. I think the mix of personalities is much more interesting with MOF. With Middle Brother, their styles are similar enough that the sum didn't seem to equal more than the parts.

Utterly amazing show last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Deer Tick played first, then Dawes, then the new act Middle Brother.
The whole show was epic. Deer Tick were great....played a handful of new tunes and some great covers. Dawes were really good as well. Middle Brother tore the house down. The best closing song I ever saw with Ian from Deer Tick taking the mic and signing "Down South in New Orleans" (a song that I hope we hear from Dr. John......in fact...maybe they can play it together). Everyone was on stage and it was amazing I'll have videos in the next few days.
Never gave these guys a chance until the lineup dropped. I've heard good things, so I downloaded War Elephant and Born on Flag Day. At first I didn't like the lead vocals (sounded too much like a gritty Axl Rose, whom I despise), but the more I listened to them, the better it got. The lyrics are beautiful, and they mix it up so well. My favorites are Easy, Little White Lies, Ashamed, These Old Shoes, Diamond Rings, and Baltimore Blues. Now I'm jacked up to see them live, and I'm hoping they aren't scheduled for Thursday (never get off work in time to see Thursday shows)

The lead singer's voice is an odd one but if you can get past it after the initial listen you'll warm up to it. I remember disliking Neil Young and Bob Dylan because of their voice when I first heard them but we all know how great they are. John's great and you'll be happy to know that Ian (guitarist) sings a bunch on the new album...so they're switching it up a bit.
I'd imagine they get a Thursday slot but we'll see.

Oh, I wasn't dissing the lead singer. Infact, I kinda like his voice now, it gives them their own unique style. Im with ya on the Neil Young and Dylan, two of my favorites that aren't considered great singers. I'd throw Tom Waits in there too. Heck, my favorite live band is WSP, and JB is no Pavarotti either. I think thats why so many people (on this board anyway) are turned off by them. For me, good lyrics and a great lead guitar are all I really need

Oh man. As if Dr. John and Dan Auerbach weren't amazing enough. I can't even fathom seeing Deer Tick do something with Dr. John as well. And it would be just as awesome to see Dr. John do that song at all. Fingers crossed
