I never waited more then 5 minutes for water at any station. It was much hotter last year, it's just more idiots showed up this year and thus more issues.

Besides the person who died on Thursday, any other deaths reported? Given there are tens of thousands more kids this year who didn't know what they were getting into... We'll probably come across a corpse or two during cleanup
I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.

Perhaps it's a bit harsh to call inexperienced youth "idiots" because they weren't prepared for triple digit temps, obscene amounts of dust and humidity like a sauna. Many of these kids are from places where it rarely gets above 80 and 95 on a forecast doesn't always translate to 95 with a heat index of 106 in the South.I'm 45 and did everything one could do to prepare and even I was astounded at the amounts of dust and it's impact on the respiratory system.I ended up leaving Saturday because the bad was outweighing the good at that point.Having people pour out their water when entering centeroo is simply inhumane and I finally found a working misting tent on my third try Friday....the first two weren't working.Don't get me wrong. There were some wonderful positive things about Roo.The people and atmosphere are great and the music is incomparable, but the negatives mean no more Roos for me unless it's moved to a cooler season.I agree it will take a major lawsuit or two,but things have to change. My daughter's still there and I won't rest until she's safe at home. She's in the upper right field by the trees,a 50 minute walk to centeroo and she hasn't been able to locate a taxi going to or fro the entire weekend.
I know I wasn't ready my first year in 06... all I was ready to do was party. The first day definitely taught me the most important lesson that stuck with me ever since: remember the word "moderation" and KEEP COOL. I had my ass handed to me by mother nature and etc. that day, all the while ignorantly loving it with a smile that couldn't be taken from me.

Its not their fault that they didn't expect the heat to be that intense, but anyone who gets into a situation where it's 95-100 degrees and decides to get piss ass wasted by 3 PM without carrying any water on them deserves to be called an idiot, because they are one. Anyone with a brain knows that alcohol dehydrates you, and so does the heat and humidity, and all it takes is a little common sense to make the decision to pace yourself. It's all just kids who hear that Bonnaroo is the place to go to get super fucked up and thats all they go there for. I don't want those kind of people at Bonnaroo.

I'm an adult and agree, but if you'd turned me loose at 18 in a place with no parental units, alcohol and other party favors,I'm not so sure pacing myself would've been on my agenda either. That being said,I do agree that's not exactly the most favorable candidate for your Roo neighbor.
My first Bonnaroo was when I was 19, and I didn't pass out/get sick at all, but that's besides the point. I don't care about the age, it's about the attitude. Bonnaroo isn't JUST a 4 day party, it's a fantastic music festival where someone like myself, who is in love with music and can find something enjoyable about almost any genre, can go to have every taste in music I have satisfied. It goes back the fact that it just pisses me off when kids just show up to party, especially when it is THAT crowded.
Also, while I'm on a rant, can I just say we need to actively try to eliminate crowd surfing from roo? It's not a fucking Limp Bizkit concert. There were actually about 5 kids, one of which was WAY too heavy to be crowd surfing, doing so during MAN MAN?!?!?! what the shit?
They made you empty your water? In heat like this they shouldn't be worried about stuff like that. Plus I like to put my water bladder in the cooler to get it good and cold before I would leave camp. Does there water stations still have that sulfer smell and taste to it?
No, it's filtered water now. And yeah, they made me empty the bladder. They said no outside food or drink except sealed water bottles... The dudes justification was that I could have had vodka or something in there. I offered him a sip to prove it was water, but he wouldn't take it and then just made me empty it.
obviously the guy isnt going to take a sip of your dosed camelbak....
there was a rumor on another message board that some 24 year old kid was dead today... not sure if its legit, and i couldnt find any articles about it. but figured it might be worth mentioning.
They did make me dump the water in my Camelbak and took my ziplock baggie of what was very clearly trailmix on the first day. By Saturday, with the heat and the broken faucets around the stations, they barely even looked at my bag.
I certainly hope no one else has died. There was a weird rumor that they found a body in a Porto going around yesterday in the camp.
And following the "massive party" line of thought, two kids (couldn't be older than 17-18) were complaining about how there weren't ENOUGH drugs at 'Roo this year. Made my head spin.
Ah yes, the old dosed water trick. I always love to dilute uber expensive liquid lsd in water and then trick people into drinking it. Gets em everytime.
This was also my first roo I came as prepared as possible and feel I was better off than most people. I left Saturday night because it was not what I had expected at all. I really wanted to see some good bands play but it just turned into an interesting people watching festival because you couldn't hear or see the music well unless you showed up 4 hours early. I drank maybe 8 beers in 3 days and that was it and I was pretty miserable I dont even want to know how miserable people drinking 20 beers a day felt. I thought I saw a dead guy on my way out to camp the last day. There was a younger guy laying in the dirt faced down sprawled out right outside the porta potties I poked him and he was breathing, but that had me really worried. They also made us pour our water out just to go inside to wait 20 minutes to fill it back up.

This is really a tangential argument. You can't control a person's attitude or maturity level. However, you can control their safety and access to lifesaving water and shade.
Have you ever seen a sign in Bonnaroo that says drink a gallon of water a day? Has Bonnaroo ever had a decent water and sewage level for a 1st world community of 80,000 people over the past few years? Has Bonnaroo ever posted notice to people that getting drunk in the middle of a 95 degree day is a bad idea? No. But they could, easily. Its a matter of what's important to Bonnaroo and it appears that the bottom line is more important than reducing heat stroke and risk of death. Unfortunately Bonnaroo is probably the most dangerous festival around and doesn't look to be changing anytime soon.
It's pretty telling that the last death at Coachella was in 2008 and was an heroine OD, yet Bonnaroo has a death every year that appears heat related. This is in addition to over 1000 heat related injuries, and those are the ones that go reported.

I was carrying a gallon jug of water about three quarters full and was told I couldn't bring it into Centeroo since it was not sealed.
Rather than walk 15 minutes back to camp, I just watered the tree and then went in. So I could 10 minutes later buy water at 2.50 a half liter.

How about those signs on the Which and What screens saying "hydrate! Hydrate! It's super important!" or the fact that it's COMMON SENSE that you need to hydrate in that kind of weather, especially when drinking. I'm sorry, if you can't party responsibly, then I guess you get what you have coming to you. You can blame Bonnaroo as much as you want, but there is really nobody to blame but the irresponsible kids.

I'm pretty sure this is the first year that many people have been treated for heat injuries. Whoever said it was right, last year was DEFINITELY hotter and I didnt witness a single person get sick from heat or pass out. That doesn't mean it didnt happen at all, but this year I saw several kids a day pass out

Not heat related but my wife and I saw two accidents on I-24 between Manchester and Chattanooga on our drive home. One had a car that looked like it had been engulfed in flames at one point. Anyone know if they are Roo related?
I agree that people did not take the heat seriously. They had another water shortage this year because my wife went by the hair salon on Saturday and they said they were shut down to conserve water. I also noticed they shut down the fountain at one point.

The security dumping your water out if it's an open container isn't anything new. If you bring food in make sure it's granola bars or something that comes sealed. I feel like if you're new to Bonnaroo, all it takes is some basic research to prepare yourself.

Ive never had my camelbak dumped and i would flat out refuse to do so if asked. Theres another line with someone whos less of a douchebag and i dont have the patience for people who are less concerned about my health and safey than i am. Explain to them its 100 fucking degrees and you are in a field so you will pass out and die if you dont have water or find another line to go into. It really doesnt make sense to spend the morning preparing yourself for a long day in the hot sun only to have your water dumped out at the gates.
I had never had my water dumped in years past but I saw this kind of stuff coming. I hate to hear about the terrible conditions. I've said it before that the festival is more about money than the experience now which sucks. I'm a big MMJ fan and close to the festival and really glad I didn't breakdown and go just for Jacket.

I saw those slides several times and I give them props for making that PSA or whatever. But on the other hand this is like placing warnings on cigarette packs, it doesn't exactly absolve them of all responsibility. They still need better access to water and shade inside Centeroo. You can't be taken seriously saying "hydrate!" while making people dump out all their water and ice, and especially gatorade, and have half of your water taps broken along with your mist tents.
Actually I thought the heat was better this year than last. I'm on meds that recommend limited exposure to sun but still parked myself on the field for Grace Potter>Decemberists & then Allison Krause and Mumford & Sons. Drank lots of water, limited the alcohol until the sun went down, and doused myself repeatedly with spray sun screen. Take care of yourself and it's uncomfortable but not unbearable.
Ah yes, the old dosed water trick. I always love to dilute uber expensive liquid lsd in water and then trick people into drinking it. Gets em everytime.
that was sarcasm, my friend. but is it really outside the realm of possibility that some adulterant would be added to the contents of a camelbak?
they should really change the rule that you are allowed one drink on your way in the gate - that could be one beer, one water, one gin and tonic - who cares... open / closed - eh, whats the difference.

Improvements that could be made: Shade in the Which And What Stage areas. Do they really think having people dump out the water at Centeroo is a good idea? Temprature Updates every where. Hey people its 98 and feels like 102 drink some water. The Fountain is awesome, I think more would be nice. They have people wait in the Which and what stage for pit passes for hours, why? 8 am hand out pit passes for that day. That's right 8 am if you get in line early it will be in the cool of the AM.

First: Why are you defending Bonnaroo on this? Isn't this an area they should perpetually be improving in?
Second: Putting Hydrate on a screen between sets is not near enough. How many people do you think look at that screen during a set? Hydrating is actually not common sense. Yes its common sense to have a glass of water every now and then, but at Bonnaroo you need a gallon a day to be healthy and ensure safety. Did you drink that amount?
Use your brain and stop thinking that you define common sense.
so it sounds like people are just complaining to complain. i brought a backpack and filled it with sealed bottles of water, took one out for the walk to centeroo and got in there no problem with a backpack full of water. sure, my back was a little sweaty, but it was worth it. if you go into something like this completely clueless about the entire thing, i hate to say it, but you kinda deserve what happens to you. its all common sense. thats why the key is to do your "partying" at night when its cooler out. i stuck to that train of thought this year and had no problems at all.
