Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
This is absolutely heartbreaking, no matter what the cause was. He was in pod 10? That's where I was.. that's why the road was blocked off? I thought it was so the church could use the street. I don't even know what to say. So, so sad. I tried my best to check on people who looked like they were having a rough time. I gave away water and helped a couple people get medical help. People in my group made fun of me for it, but it made me feel better.
I just want to throw this in here because it should be said, always bring some snacks, hydration isn't the only key - getting some carbs/complex sugars in your system after hours of dancing and movement is often more helpful then straight water. The water will run straight through you once you start using your bladder often, ya know classic "breaking the seal" issue. Plus if you are burning any energy you need to put not just water but ENERGY back into your system..
screw the don't take outside food, nobody has taken a snack from me ever

People earlier in this thread were talking about what would happen if the media got a hold of this and spun it in a paranoia fashionable way. Link on Huffington Post's main page:
This is horrible news. My prayers and thoughts go out to Beth's and Chris's families. Regardless of cause, family member and friends of these people are hurting right now and need only our sympathy and support.
I love my Inforoosters, we are a family of passionate music lovers, not just Bonnaroo enthusiasts. Im proud to say Chris was one of us.
I will happily donate/participate in whatever Inforoo decides to do for Yoderoo's memorial. If Beth was one of us, I'd be there for her family too.

These are sad and unfortunate events that happen every year. Even with all of the available first aid and assistance, you gotta be self-aware. The heat this time of year in rural Tennessee is damn dangerous.

So tragic that two people who were looking forward to Roo just like the rest of us are now gone.My heart goes out to their families and friends.I remember seeing a post by yoderoo last week and thinking what a cool username and even wishing I'd ended my username with "roo".Not a very poignant thing really, but my memory returned there when I read of his passing. May he find his eternal "Bonnaroo",a place where everything is always "just right" where the young never die and the music is perfect and eternal.Peace.
Seriously man, if you dont like the heat, don't come back, but don't come to a community where the majority of the people are bonnaroo enthusists, and biznatch and moan.
I think everyone here would rather you just go to coachella than to make another crybaby post.
Yes, because people who don't agree with you should be banned!
Edit: not trying to screw up a sad thread with this kind of response, but it's absurd that you think people who don't agree with you should be banned. This is, above all, a DISCUSSION board.
And I disagree with the whole "whenever you have that many people in one place someone is bound to die"...look at Burning Man. Nobody dies there (besides one person who committed suicide in 2007).
Burning Man, who only just last year got up to half the attendance of Bonnaroo, has had two non-suicide deaths. The first one was when it was only 8,000 people.
I'm not trying to be cold when I point out the statistics, and I hope others aren't either. But for a long weekend Manchester is Tennessee's fourth largest city.
I also feel like Bonnaroo panicked a bit. Everyone is completely right that they don't play up the heat like they should pre-festival. But some of you may have noticed that during the festival there was an interesting turn in their attitude and I saw people on mic's giving, "housekeeping" messages on several stages talking about the heat. Plus, the screens on What and Which were NOT used for the "Color" app photos like they originally planned but with hydration messages. So I think they balked. Hopefully an indication of more permanent change in attitude.
No matter the cause, this needs to be a catalyst for InfoRoo to pay MORE attention to each other and be a closer community not just virtually, but in the real world as well.

I've only gotten to page 3, but I have to say this. Saturday I took my bf to the Pod 4 EMT(in Access) because his ankles were swollen, he was seeing double and I was overall worried. The EMT wouldn't Believe us when we told him we don't do any NO NO WORD!!! and haven't all day and weekend. I told him we both have very stable careers and we don't want to mess them up for a weekend of "fun". And we told him about the 1/2 can of beer he drank. But in the end the EMT sent us on our way with no water or anything.
Say hey johnny boy, the battle call United we stand, divided we fall Together we are what we can't be alone We came to this country you made it our home
It does sound like some people had some poor experiences with medical staff. Does anyone know if they changed anything about that this year? Hired from a different company or something? That is unfortunate. They can't refuse to treat you if they think you are on drugs.
screw the don't take outside food, nobody has taken a snack from me ever
Agree!! I never had my dried mangoes questioned, but I did have to pour out my water bottle twice entering Centeroo. Dried fruits are my little secret survival technique.
Wow... this is terrible. RIP Yoder. He seemed like a really good dude who really loved music and Bonnaroo. We disagreed alot when it came to electronic music and hip-hop, but he would always be the bigger man and just say that opinions are opinions and that we both just like what we like. Not many people have that kind modesty, especially around here.

That's because they allow small snacks into centeroo. You guys aren't getting away with anything

I think that (just like in real life) some people are more professional, caring and sympathetic while others aren't. From the differing stories I've heard it seems some people dealt with some great members of the medical staff while others dealt with the less cordial members of the medical staff. Seems it's that way for pretty much everything (people patting you down is another one...some are cool, some are power-hungry).

RIP yodaroo and everyone else that has lost their lives at this festival. Having experienced it myself for the first time this year there is no question the heat is very dangerous we all have to be careful.
Very sad to finally log back onto inforoo after a long absence to see this news.
As for those comments earlier in the thread that some people who get sick are "idiots", I will concur that SOME are. I took my mom again this year and she was just plain stupid. Barely drank any water on Friday and then couldn't figure out why she was nauseated and severely swollen (edema). She apparently thought pouring water on herself was good enough. I drank nine liters plus a few Gatorades and she barely broke 60 ounces of water. In 14 HOURS. She made me feel like a bitch for constantly nagging her about it ("Drink more water.", "How much water have you had today?", "How long ago did you pee?"), but she's my mother and she wasn't taking care of herself! Some people just don't have a clue and don't get a clue until they get sick. She's a grown-ass woman who's been to Bonnaroo before and wouldn't even listen to her own daughter about how to stay safe.
As you can see, this has completely upset me. I've never had such a frustrating experience trying to keep someone alive and I know I can't be alone in this. I was worried sick on Saturday when we went our separate ways, but I made sure she knew where the shady spots and the closest water stations to her shows were. I just can't figure out why she was acting like a spiteful child. I blame the dust. It was a bitch.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 for a building fund to build a house in Chris' honor in Reynosa, Mexico.

i'm just so shocked and saddened to hear about yoderoo......any death is a tragedy, but one of an inforooster that we all feel like we knew so well is even harder to digest. RIP chris.

Case in point: I'm going to Burning Man this year. It's a week-long festival in the desert where you are completely reliant on yourself, meaning you must bring everything you need to survive in the desert for 7 days. Burning Man is VERY CLEAR that temperatures could exceed 100 degrees, or dip down to 40 degrees at night, and winds could exceed 60 mph and that there are massive dust storms and thunderstorms. They TELL YOU to expect it, be prepared for it, and to bring everything you need to rely on yourself. Nobody dies at Burning Man once a year, which is a way harsher environment. Bonnaroo could do a better job of explaining on their website what the conditions are like and making sure people are ABSOLUTELY clear on taking care of themselves, rather than just telling them "it's hot!" and "Hydrate!" because there's more to it than that.
first: im jealous - one year i will make it out to Black Rock. I hope you post about your experience... i will be watching it on ustream again
second: It seems like people think of Bonnaroo as a safe, catered environment. And why not? it's sponsored, it has bands, it's in a town right off the highway, and there's a walmart 10 minutes away. I think people like thinking that Bonnaroo is just a big concert and not all that physically taxing.
Burning Man is in the middle of the desert, and aside from the "man", the sale of ice and a lot of porto's, there's nothing there that the attendees and artists didnt directly bring. You can't buy a t shirt saying you were there. I doubt you would say there are less party favors there, but for some reason, people know what they're getting into. Or at least they have the notion that if something goes horribly wrong, there is basically no one there to help. frankly, that's what it's really like at roo. when you are there, outside of your friends, no one is really paying attention to what you're doing. that guy at the beer tent isnt going to say "youve had enough, how about a water".
I agree that Roo needs to step it up. Outside each porto station, why not have the "pee color" chart as someone mentioned? It's somewhat funny to have signs up about pee, so people would read them, and who knows, maybe it would help a few people not have heat stroke.
Roo also needs to come to terms with what's going on - warn about the dangers of research chemicals and/or molly combined with dehydration and dancing. Send out txts and tweets during roo and some reminder emails about personal safety in the week leading up to roo. Perhaps this place needs to revisit the drukq policy - maybe have some links to erowid available in a locked thread.
It's pretty sad that your odds of dying at Bonnaroo are higher if you are on inforoo than if you are not.

Plain and simple, heat can kill, no matter what changes Bonnaroo makes. You see the news reports every summer in major metropolitan areas about people dying during hot spells. Now, think about trying to survive in a tent in 90-plus degree temps with high humidity for four days. Some of this is the timing and setting, and you can can be prepared, in tip-top physical shape, and it can sneak up on you anyway. In 2007, I stayed up late dancing and drinking at the Flaming Lips and Mule shows. Afterward, I walked back to my tent in BFE and fell asleep. It was much cooler, but when I woke up around 10:30, it was blazing hot and I was in a pool of sweat. I had downed some water before I went to bed, and when I got up I drank another water and some V8 - but apparently no where near as much fluid as I needed. I ended up making the long trek up to Centeroo for a day of music. It was blazing, oppressively hot that day, and by the time I got there I could hardly walk and I was slightly disoriented. Luckily, I got some help, but I did not feel normal again - no headaches, etc. - for 8-plus hours. I missed a whole day of music, but I learned an important lesson about properly hydrating, even before bed time when the temps are much cooler. I'm writing this and I used to be an active runner/road racer, and I still hike, mountain bike and work out like a mad man. It didn't matter that day, and it didn't matter this year, on Saturday, when I got pretty run down from the heat during the afternoon. Luckily, I had learned my lesson and drank Gatorade this year in between as much water as possible and also snacked more. A lot of this is knowing your body and its limits, but your self awareness can get skewed when you're having fun dancing and mixing in alcohol, which further dehydrates you.
Roo also needs to come to terms with what's going on - warn about the dangers of research chemicals and/or molly combined with dehydration and dancing. Send out txts and tweets during roo and some reminder emails about personal safety in the week leading up to roo.
I'm working on this right now with a few other members interested. Anyone can PM me if you would like the information as well.
