Did anybody else go to this set? Was one of the most bizzare musical experiences I think I've ever had. Coming in with no knowledge a man ,who seems to be a suave Middle Eastern businessmen, walks onstage and very formally introduces Omar who is dressed in full Syrian attire with sunglasses. The crowd was already going absolutely crazy and the Arabic trance/pop/traditional music began. The most bizzare part was probably how Omar really only had three things he did. 1)Clap very reservedly 2) Make a motion to the audience to like come at him 3) Pace the stage. Somehow he managed to have more stage presence with and extremely reserved personality and style and it just blew my mind. The dust dancing near the back was pretty intense too. Wondering what others thought of the show?
Hahahaha, I love your description of the three things he did. I think you missed one thing he did.....shake the microphone toward the crowd to the beat.
Anyways this set was absolutely mind boggling. It really was some great dance music and the crowd seemed to love him. The amount of people dancing and the dust kicking up was outstanding. I had read a little before about him and found out that he was the largest musical act in Syria right now. Just the look of him was interesting so I had to check him out.
Anyways it was a really fun show, especially for late night Saturday when I was really starting to drag.

Didn't stay the whole time, but I had such a fun time while I was there. Everything about the show was so funny to me, and I was so happy to see everyone getting into the music. In the back everyone was dancing like crazy and rolling in the dirt, kicking up so much dust that when combined with the music, I felt like I was somewhere in the Middle East
It was pretty bizarre, but the music was pretty repetitive and his presence was a joke. Couldn't wait for it to end so the real fun with Gogol could start.

Im so glad Im not the only one who thought this show was bizarre. The people around me seemed to love it. The music was cool, but the whole promoter/translator guy was weird. There was that moment where the top Korg went out, and Omar just kinda stood there and yelled for his promoter. It was interesting lol.

My fiance' and I were there for the whole thing and were very amused at the least. One other thing you guys missed when you were listing the "things" he does...he says "yuuuuuuuuuuup!" like the guy on Storage Wars during every song.

Was fun in the beginning. It went on way too long (he went ten minutes over his end time too). It didn't help that pretty much everyone around me in the front was just waiting for Gogol. One guy next to me even said "I was pretty sure that Gogol all died and this guy would just keep playing until we all left." He was an ok opener just played far too long.
Because of thge language barrier and lack of movment, I got the impression that the keyboard player was actually the master mind behind the whole thing. He was the one having to work his ass off playing the keys while omar waved both hands at me. It was a sweet show though.
The translator really made it though. Instead of being so excited he was like an insurance salemans offering you a price quote. "So umm would you like to hear some more? Yeah? OK we can do that. Keep going Omar."

How did I not see the translator?? Dammit that would have added to the hilarity of the situation. I was pretty tired and was going between passing out on the ground to up dancing and laughing. I guess my only complaint is I was so exhausted I couldn't make it for Gogol because he went a little over his time.

HAHA!!!
Love the description and loved the show... Coming from Dearborn, MI, I described it to my friends as if it were my buddy Ali's wedding all over again, but underneath a tent with a bunch of sand, and a whole lot more weed...

BEST SHOW. Im still convinced he was an oil business man on his way to meet with the Bushe family and dropped in at bonnaroo to perform a show. The energy was awesome and it was perfect fit for Gogol Bordello. To think this guy is making an album with Bjork right now
After seeing this show i am honestly amazed with his quality of vocals, and sounds. He showered us all in amazing light work and hand clapping. NOT ONCE DID I NOT CLAP AT ANY OF HIS SONGS! That's just an amazing performer. I am just blown away. I will probably buy some of his 500 albums, does anyone have any suggestions?
So was all of the music actually live or was there a backing tape? I strolled past the place (couldn't see a darned thing - was too tired to try) and in my estimation sounded pretty tight. If it was totally live color me impressed.
I was totally live. 3 guys. Omar, the keyboard player, and the translator. The keyboard player played a synth version of each instrument, with crazy speed. Omar's voice was spot on for the very little I know about Eastern pop music, and the translator just came out to help Omar and the crowd by being the middle man. Really it was just two dudes, and they were solid.

i strolled over there between dr. john's sets and was very amused and inspired by the dust cloud in the back. I stuck around for the "Do you want to hear more? Ok Omar..." or something like that which I found completely at odds with everything else going on.
The weirder thing, however was that when I walked back over to Dr. John's 2nd set I walked past the lost and found and who did I find there? Yup you guessed it.. Ron Jeremy!
