Ten Greatest Rappers 1. Notorious B.I.G 2. Jay-Z 3. Eminem 4. Nas 5. Tupac 6. Andre 3000 7. Guru (Gang Starr, yes) 8. Method Man 9. Snoop Dogg 10. Busta Rhymes
Honorable Mentions Mos Def, Ice Cube, Scarface, Ghostface Killah, Common, Rakim, KRS-One, Big Boi
Snoop Dogg makes my list because his flow and cadence earn high marks. His lyrics are not great but you put on Snoop and you know its him. Plus, that laid back rapping style really goes well with the West Coast sound. Andre 3000's last verse in Aquemini is the best verse ever.
Ten Greatest Rap Groups 1. Outkast 2. The Roots 3. Wu-Tang Clan 4. NWA 5. Beastie Boys 6. Army of the Pharaohs 7. Tha Dogg Pound 8. Run DMC 9. Cash Money Millionaires (Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Birdman and others) 10. OFWGKTA
Honorable mentions The Sugarhill Gang (for the first hip hop hit), Black Star, The Fugees, G-Unit (with Young Buck and The Game), Erick B and Rakim
The rap group criteria may have strayed from the lyrical criteria a little because of impact on rap like the Run DMC example and NWA being high on my list.
Kudos to everyone not putting Wiz Khalifa on their lists. People have sense on this thread.
Got carried away with the triple post. Compiling these lists turned out to be alot of fun.

in no particular order (groups)...
1. a tribe called quest 2. psycho realm 3. wu-tang 4. people under the stairs!! 5. de la soul 6. strong arm steady 7. the roots 8. jedi mind tricks 9. the pharcyde 10. NWA
for the rappers, 10 greatest is too hard to pin down. i'd definitely throw DR. DRE, ghostface, krs one, and maybe some brother ali on mine though.

I might get some flack for not putting Tribe on the ten list but I just really never dug them IMO, somethin about Q-Tip's delivery but I won't deny the lyrical skill. Leaving Cash Money up there because I believe they are a huge influence in that grimy, crunked, Southern rap like the Lil John's and they outlived No Limit Records in Louisiana.
Who says there are not great rap groups out there. Juggs, you are sorely mistaken.

If you like Jedi Mind Tricks, check out Army of the Pharaohs. It's Jedi on PCP imbued with the power of Zeus when it comes to the skills involved.
Also, Cunninlynguists are a great rap group. They have a ton of songs, too.
If you haven't ever listened to them, I suggest listening to "Seasons (feat. Masta Ace)", "Lynguistics", "Love Ain't (feat. Tonedeff)", "Beautiful Girl", and "The South".
I added them as an honorable mention, because they've been around for a while and really aren't as well known as they should be.
Cunninglynguists are a great underground group. There's alot of underground guys that don't get the light of day. Like Tech Nyne IMO. I think its somethin about they production of those groups. Lyrically impressive, but their beats aren't Timbaland or Swiss Beatz which is a great but its also a hindrance when it comes to large recognition. Let's take Missy Elliott, I'm not gonna knock her but there's no way Get Ur Freak On would have been big without that sick beat from Timbaland. I think that's why underground rap stays undeground, they focus on lyrics. Not beats. IMO
UGK, i've heard of them. Not too familiar with their work. But they are legends in the Houston scene. Didn't they invent that chopped and screwed sound?
Other than Scarface, no one has influenced southern rap more.
Not too familiar with UGK, but I think Outkast and 8Ball & MJG might have something to say about this.
Yes, Ghetto Boys do need to be in the top 10 rap group. For their controversies, and freedom of speech battles, I think 2 Live Crew should be talked about and then we have to go back to Newcleus and 'Jam on it' or Strafe and 'Set it off' for their groundbreaks beats, the 'set it off' rip is one of the most played samples of all time and most people have never heard of him.

There was no slight intended towards Outkast. I think they are the greatest hip hop group ever. But at the same time, just being from the south doesn't classify them as southern rap, if that makes sense. They are the most original sounding group in all of rap, and while they are certainly icons to southern rappers, their sound and subject matter hasn't really trickled down to others in the region.
8 Ball & MJG definitely have their place, but I would still say UGK and Scarface/Geto Boys have been more influential.

UGK (Underground Kingz) was a rap duo made up of Pimp C and Bun B. Bun B is still around, but Pimp C died (no joke) from a sizzurp overdose. But they were one of the first ever real southern rappers, and along with Outkast, broke open the entire Southern rap genre and took it mainstream.
I humbly submit one of the greatest rap songs, ever.
Pimp C & Bun B were a near perfect combination, smooth, clever, and gangster as it comes.
Hah, I was just thinking the same thing. I love UGK and Int'l Players Anthem is one of my favorite songs of all time. I completely spaced on them when making my list, but they're certainly deserving of at least a mention.

i love bun b. and to whoever was talking about underground hip hop not often making the light of day - i second that! which reminds me, immortal technique is amazing - hard strong flows.

Ok...man this is a hard list...
No Particular Order....
1. Jay-Z 2. Chuck D. 3. KRS-1 4. Ice-T 5. Dr.Dre 6. Ice Cube (Hard to believe he is still on this list) 7. ODB 8. Eminem 9. MC Lyte 10. Snoop
Honorable Mention: SugarHill Gang, Run-DMC, Biggie, Mellie Mel, Tupac and Eazy-E. I would have liked to put Eazy E higher honestly to where he made the top 10 but he just barely missed. The 10 I listed, IMO, had a flow and style that worked.

1.Tupac Shakur 2.KRS One 3. The Notorious B.I.G 4.Snoop Dogg 5.Immortal technique 6.Dr. Dre 7. Ice Cube 8. Ole' dirty bastard 9.Nas 10. Ice-T
As for groups
1. N.W.A 2. De La Soul 3. Bone Thugs & Harmony (they got kind of shitty later in their careers, but East 1999 eternal is a classic) 4.Wu-Tang Clan 5. Public Enemy 6. A tribe Called Quest 7. Cypress Hill 8.Run DMC 9.The Beastie Boys 10.Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5.
Ice Cube wrote most of his lyrics and Eazy only appears on like half of the songs on Niggaz4life and then on 100 Miles and Runnin' none of the songs are credited to Eazy as being a writer.
He was not a good rapper, just had style and got most of the attention/fame for NWA.
