As someone not from NY it’s a good venue. Easy to get to. Took the subway and didn’t get lost or mugged. No problem getting in. Coat check took a long time. Drinks expensive but duh. Sound was really good. Bathrooms no line. Exit was easy.

Awesome. If I end up digging GY!BE, I may just hit this up.

Even if their studio stuff doesn't blow you away, their live act is its own animal. Maybe check out some shows on youtube to really get a feel for them.

It's become my favorite venue in the city. The main reason is that, as far as I've experienced so far, they don't oversell it - I've legit had situations at Terminal 5 in which I could not move *at all* because everyone was packed in there so tight. All but one show I've seen at BK Steel has been sold out, but it never felt that claustrophobic. The sound is also, of course, worlds better than the sound at Terminal 5 (they'd have to try hard for it to be worse, but still). The only real gripe I have with it is the coat check situation, which can get pretty ludicrous - at the LCD Soundsystem show I attended in December, the wait to check a coat was somewhere in the vicinity of 40 minutes, and they eventually ran out of coat check space by the time one of my friends who was meeting me at the show got there. It was *slightly* better last night for Sleigh Bells, but only slightly.
Still, that's not the hugest deal in the world, and really only matters during the cold weather months. I'll always have a place in my heart for Bowery Ballroom, but, yeah, I've really enjoyed BK Steel more in the past year.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 5/14 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Forest Hills 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount
We'll be there from March 9-18. Been regularly checking Resident Advisor, Bowery Presents, MSG, Barclays websites. Any other good resources to find shows?
Brooklyn Vegan is on top of their shit when it comes to tour announcements. Baby's All Right hosts some cool acts from time to time. Elsewhere. Good Room. Rough Trade. Plugville is good for day-of stuff if you're just laying around and wanna catch something. BRIC. High Line Ballroom. Le Poisson Rouge is a great venue. Popgun
We missed Sleigh Bells last weekend because of the flu. Just read that they're opening for Pixies/Weezer show that we already have tickets for. I guess that worked out.

When I saw them at First Ave in MPLS almost two years ago to the day it was maybe the first time I've ever wanted to sit down after a show not out of a physical exhaustion, but out of an emotional one. It's one of those shows where after being hit with wave after wave of music you look to the people around you, deeply exhale, sort of chuckle and say, "Good lord, that was...a lot."

New Orleans trombonist Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has rounded up a batch of his musical friends from the Crescent City to embark on the “Voodoo Threauxdown” tour this summer. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will headline each stop with the rest of the lineup varying by date and location. Galactic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and New Breed Brass Band are the other groups set to support Andrews and his band on the run, which will also feature special guests Cyril Neville, Kermit Ruffins and Walter “Wolfman” Washington.

Then, the traveling festival visits Baltimore, Boston, Hampton Beach, New York City, Atlantic City, Bethel, Philadelphia, Lewiston, Vienna, Raleigh and Atlanta. A Midwest leg features stops in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Ravinia in the Chicago area. In September, Voodoo Threauxdown heads west with concerts confirmed in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Utah, California, Arizona and New Mexico.

this sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Shorty always plays a fun set, I haven't seen galactic in forever. Lots of opportunity for collabs here.
Yeah, that looks like a party-fun-boogying kind of show. I love both Orleans Ave. and Galactic. I know that Troy is sort of the era's trombone superstar, but Corey Henry of Galactic (he's also leader of Rebirth) is as funky as it gets. Plus adding in PHJB is nice. Then the days with Cyril, Walter and/or Kermit will be great. For those who don't know, Cyril is pretty much the hippie brother of the Neville Brothers. He's a great percussionist and sometimes plays with Galactic, Meters and Royal Southern Brotherhood.
Walter Wolfman Washington is a great guitar player and sort of mixes in blues with jazz, R&B, funk and rock. He's a really cool guy too. He's getting up there though in his mid 70's. His main band is the Roadmasters and Joe Krown Trio (with Walter, Joe and Russell Batiste).
Kermit is my generation's Louis Armstrong. He's the best trumpeter in the city and is always entertaining. Definitely a cool New Orleans tour there put together by Troy.
"We’ve partnered with Abby Portner to present her newest piece, Paradox. Her immersive experience is taking over the entire House of Vans Brooklyn space using a fun house effect of loosing sense of reality. We’ve paired with music by Zola Jesus and Yves Tumor, artists that juxtapose their haunting and angelic recordings with intense live performances to further accentuate Portner’s vision. I’ll be making my glorious return to the 9:30 Club for this. Seriously started marking my calendar today for it.
I'll be heading to the Pageant, was in Birmingham, last month. Probably going to Muddy Roots as well 8/31
If Shame is coming anywhere near you, and you're not making any plans to see them, don't call yourself a music fan.
That's all I'm gonna say about how fucking great their show was.
Tell me more. They open for Protomartyr here at a tiny little venue March 2.
They played almost all of their songs in their debut. It was very energetic, the fact that they are trying to prove themselves made it much better IMO.
It was a headliner show for them, but Shame + Protomartyr seems like a great show. Highly recommended.
