We held onto our rail spots. It was our first time seeing Gogol, so we wanted to take it all in and ended up getting a vodka shower.
Hahaha, oh man, you missed out on an awesome time by not going in the pit but I'm sure being on the rail for your first show was worth it. I think I actually remember seeing you because of your beanie. But you we're kinda toward the front-right side of the pit and we were front-left of it. I felt bad for some of the folks on the rail a couple times but hey, you know, that's what you get at a Gogol show. You've seen him once and it was at a festival, NOW you gotta see him at an actual Gogol show in a club... Ohhhh man, it's another level of craziness. I was actually surprised that the Gasparilla show got as crazy as it did. Did you notice that there were like a thousand fucking babies at the fest?!?!
I think what we have here is some confusion in communication. Haha. The show I was talking about was this past weekend in Athens, Georgia. So I was on the rail at a club show. Wasn't anywhere near Gasparilla. I was actually really close to going to that festival before I found out about the show in Athens at the Georgia Theatre.
A college greek organization and distasteful behavior? Color me absolutely not fucking surprised.
Hey now. I promise we're not all bad eggs. As a Greek myself, I'm embarrassed by this kind of behavior. It's morally reprehensible and should always be swiftly denounced and met with just punishment (not to mention prevented in the first place). However, it's important to remember that these actions are typically committed by a minority of people in the Greek system. As a whole, Greeks tend to be more actively involved in campus organizations, volunteer more regularly, donate more money to their universities, and remain actively engaged as alumni than many other students. This is but one example of many instances of problematic behavior in the history of Greek organizations, and frustrates me that crap like this still happens to this day. But please realize that many of us are not terrible people and do not condone this kind of behavior.

Ohhhh, haha, I just saw Gogol yesterday, I was REALLY considering driving up to that Athens show until my friends said they wanted to go to Gasparilla. I'm sure the show you had an absolutely amazing time at that Athens show, if you haven't already, read the story I told about how my Sunday went at Gasparilla!

Thank you for the appropriate, accurate response. As another Greek member, I support NowhereMan's post

Thanks, Fore. It's easy to understand how one might find it easy to stereotype the entire Greek system. Many Greek organizations have an ugly past with examples of horrific transgressions and deplorable behavior. I myself used to apply these stereotypes to Greek organizations, but after joining one I realized the benefits of being Greek and the positive influences Greeks can have both on campus and in their community if they prioritize values such as scholarship, character, and service. The Greek community still has a lot of work to do, but the overwhelmingly negative coverage of Greek organizations hides some of the great things they do.

Oh, I understand. I was active on campus with various student leadership organizations so I worked with quite a few great people that were involved in Greek organizations. Maybe it was just my campus, though, but it was quite the opposite - you'd find a few great people and the majority were obnoxious bad eggs. The good thing is that most of these great people I worked with tended to be leaders of whatever frat/sorority they were with, so maybe they were helping influence better behavior. It just seemed like every week there were instances of unacceptable behavior. I get the volunteer aspect and wanting to be involved and all that - I suppose I just don't understand why you'd need to pay money to do any of it. To each their own, I suppose. Maybe the campus I was on just had a bad track record or something.

Understandable. I just wanted people to hear from the perspective of someone who was a member of the Greek system in college. It's unfortunate that the majority of Greeks you came across at your university reinforced the existing negative stereotypes. I haven't interacted with many Greeks from other universities (aside from those who were in the same fraternity), but it's likely that the behavior of Greeks probably does vary quite substantially across different universities (and within the Greek system itself).
Todays certainly not a good day to be an SAE member. Probably will be scratching off the car decal before heading out.
Oh shit, I just looked that up, good call, do not advertise that
Oh wow... They were banned from my alma mater last year. Granted UConn kicked them out for a hazing incident- not even close to being comparable to this Oklahoma incident- but it doesn't seem like things are going in the right direction for SAE. I didn't realize you were a member Phyre Fest.

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
What's worse, is that the same song on the video was sung by some of our members back in the early 2000's when I was active and there was definitely racism throughout the fraternity. Though we did have 5 african american members at the time.

The real problem here is this, if multiple organizations in the country - esp. in the midwest and west have members that espouse views like this it's toxic. And on top of that being in a Greek organization opens up opportunities for future careers and relationships with other members. So the practices that disclude black and minority member and are clearly racisit as individuals - it has a systemic effect on their future. And I would be seriously surprised if across this country there aren't frats AND sororities that make it clear that we are not invited to the party.

Good points. One of the things that bothers me about the Greek system is that Greek organizations, especially those in more conservative-leaning areas, have a deep history of racial discrimination. These days, it's less rampant and less obvious, but that's still not good enough. These kinds of attitudes (along with hazing and male chauvinism) need to be eliminated altogether if the Greek community wants to gain back everyone's respect and trust.
