I agree that you don't have to have a diverse tastes to say you love music. Someone who listens to nothing but jam bands wouldn't say they don't like music, they do. They just prefer jam bands. Maybe they prefer nothing but Phish, with a little WSP, The Werks or Dead sprinkled in. But mostly Phish. They still like music. I refuse to listen to metal if I can avoid it, doesn't mean I don't like music.
Honestly, just be happy that the're passionate about their carrots. There are some people out there, this guy I work with, who don't like music. Seriously. When I asked him once what kind of music he liked to listen to he said he doesn't. Music is background noise to him and he rarely ever pays attention to what is on and he doesn't play music. When he drives, he listens to talk radio. THAT is something that is concerning/ worth being perturbed by.
I agree with this. I have met a few people that just don't get music. Those are the scary people.
crazykittensmile, you might listen to talk on the way home, but you are no where near someone like Monie is talking about.

Yeah, see, if that person says they don't like other forms of music, and only like jam bands, then they don't like music. They like jam bands.
Not liking metal doesn't mean you don't like music. Not liking anything except metal would suggest you don't like music. You like music, but dislike metal.
It's not that I care that people only like carrots, it's that people who hate lettuce, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus seem to think they love vegetables.

I usually listen to talk radio on my way home from work (local NPR affiliate). I like to know what the traffic is looking like and get a little glimpse into the day's news. BE PERTURBED.
That was just an example. I asked him specifically what he listens to while he drives, because most people listen to music in the car even if they don't at home, and that was his answer. I didn't mean be perturbed by him listening to talk radio, I meant that he doesn't listen to music at all. He said he's been to one concert in his life and it Harry Connick Jr and it was last minute and free from a friends extra ticket. The idea of not listening to music is strange to me. Way more strange than only liking one genre.

I think it was your carrot analogy. But even saying that you like one thing and hate all others, you still like music. Saying you like music doesn't have to mean you like a variety. Music is music, regardless of how narrow your appreciation of it is. I think that's where we're disagreeing with you.
I'll listen to NPR when driving or when driving at night Coast to Coast (best show ever). It's easier for me to zone out and relax listening to talk than radio.
Okay to jump in here for a sec, I have to say that I can see what both sides are saying here. On the one hand, I agree that being really genre-specific or band-specific to the point that you generally don't enjoy anything outside of those musical confines...that doesn't really make you a music lover. I think of "music lover" as someone who appreciates multiple elements of the musical experience/different sounds from varying genres/exploration of new beats, etc. I have my preferred genres and fave artists/bands of course, we all do, but I also like hearing new things often and delving into music that isn't on my Top 25 Most Played list or whatever. But at the same time, if someone plays their favorite genre all the time and grooves down hard to it and sings all the lyrics, they are clearly a music lover of their own kind. Just not what I think of when I hear the phrase. If that makes sense?
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Hmmm I don't know man. I get what your saying but it's messing with my brain. Jam bands still play music. There are a lot of artists that fall under that umbrella. Just because they only like that genre doesn't mean they don't love music. That genre IS music to them and probably all that they know or want to know about the art form.
Then again I am that guy who can't listen to a lot of music at once.
A girl I went to high school with is a pop country FANATIC. For years she has gone to a few shows a month, sometimes driving 3+ hours to shows on Long Island on a weeknight to see favorites. Most of these shows she goes to alone- even the ones further away. She'll show up hours ahead of time to ensure her great spot at GA shows. Her FB and Instagram are filled with pictures from meet and greets with artists and pictures of her Sirius when she loves the song came on. Last year? She moved to Nashville. She was hand picked by Taylor Swift to go to a private 1989 show at Tay's parent's house (from a list compiled of super fans on social media) earlier this year.
I am not backing her style of music... but are you saying she's not a music fan because it's all pop country- and often the same names over and over and over at that? I think she likes music.
Not quite. The element I think your missing is how she would respond to hearing something that isn't pop country. If she listens to other stuff from time to time and can appreciate it, she probably likes music. If she dislikes almost everything else, she probably just likes country. To go back to my vegetable analogy, the issue isn't that she likes carrots, it's that she dislikes every other type of vegetable, yet tells people how much she likes vegetables. And it doesn't bother me in the sense of "your listening to music wrong grrr!". It just makes zero sense to me on a logical level.
I see what you're saying, but your vegetable analogy is erroneous. While carrots do not contain the qualities found in most vegetables, the qualities found in most music can be found in one genre.
Up until I hit college, I listened almost exclusively to hip-hop. And frankly - largely due to the emotionality of the teenage years - I'd say that I loved music then more than I do now, even though my musical tastes are much, much wider now. Within any given genre, you can get very deep into the foundation that makes music fundamentally appealing - tension and release, prosody, metaphor, rhythm, etc. So even though I only listened to rap, I appreciated that music itself can do wonderful things. Music is a wonderful medium of expression that has great power to move people (emotionally and physically). I greatly appreciated that, even if other genres of music weren't ones that moved me personally. Although other genres weren't my cup of tea, I recognized that each genre is just a subset of music as a whole, and music can be incredibly beautiful. You can love the intrinsic nature of something without loving its myriad incarnations.

So the carrot lover loves vegetables, despite hating every other type of vegetable? What about a person who loves cats, but doesn't care about any other animal on the planet. Are we going to call that person an animal lover now? I'd call that person a cat lover.
"But even saying that you like one thing and hate all others, you still like music"
How can you hate 95% of something, and still like it? Those two ideas completely contradict each other. That's honestly the entire pet peeve in a nutshell. Music is the science of melodic vibrations in the air eliciting a response from our brain. If you hate 95% of the vibrations and responses, I just don't see any logical way to call that loving music. It seems an awful lot like enjoying one tiny sub-division of music more so than music itself.
I'm not sure why this is what everyone thinks I'm saying...

Whoops. Guess what I said has already been said. Carry on then lads.

Good point. I used an animal lover analogy that might better give you an idea of how I view it.
See, if someone says "other genres aren't my cup of tea" I can totally believe that person appreciates and loves music. Its when people say "I only listen to classic rock, and everything being made today sucks, but I love music" that it's difficult to believe them. It's when they highly regard one small percentage of music, while completely disregarding the rest.
Someone who listens to one artist all the time and knows it bothers me way less than someone that says they listen to "everything"
But what if I say I like everything except metal and pop country? It's easier to say that than to say I like indie, rock, indie rock, electronic, jamtronica, r&b, hip hop, alternative r&b, pop, indie or alt pop, pop punk, jam, americana, country, folk, folk country, funk, psychedelia, some bluegrass, and whatever the fuck else is out there that I listen too. I like all kinds of music, except metal and pop country.

Exactly.
I'm purely discussing this specific type of person.
Yeah, see, if that person says they don't like other forms of music, and only like jam bands, then they don't like music. They like jam bands.

My response is all to ask about some obscure band I know they haven't heard of. Saying you listen to a lots of different bands and genres is better. My response is normally that I listen to a wide range of music, particularly Americana and bands that are great live.

You're cute. But even if by some miracle I miraculously became brain washed like the rest of you, she's pretty much all pop now. She's soooooo over country now.

Gotcha. I think I'd agree with you then. I dunno if you can consider yourself a music lover while not appreciating its universality. Disregarding other types of music is one thing, but to actively think it's necessarily bad or has no value is quite another.

I'm mostly a mood-determines-my-music kind of person. So i listen to everything.
When I'm in a good mood, it's rap. Not that slow crap either. But fun, upbeat, let's bang bitches and make money kind of rap. TRAP QUEEN HELLO When I'm angry, I put it on something darker like system of a down, or marilyn manson, maybe even mudshovel by staind. When I'm feeling in love, I want pop music. Think top 40. When I'm wanting to get alone, I listen to that hispter bullshit that I absolutely adore. When I'm completely alone in the car, I listen to my banjo music bc I like banjo music. RARELY DO I LISTEN TO COUNTRY but ohhh shit if you put on some GARTH MOTHERFUCKING BROOKS, IT'S GOING DOWN KARAOKE STYLE YALL.
I like it all, but I don't listen to it all the time. I could never listen to just swifty bc she doesn't have music that ALWAYS fits my mood. Same with most artsits. They don't have something for every mood I might have.
My response is all to ask about some obscure band I know they haven't heard of. Saying you listen to a lots of different bands and genres is better. My response is normally that I listen to a wide range of music, particularly Americana and bands that are great live.

Absolutely. Most of the time that obscure band I know they won't know is My Morning Jacket.
