I'm going to take my dad to a NASCAR race as his Father's Day gift because he's weird and likes NASCAR. Does anyone have advice in terms of what is considered a good seat or about pretty much anything that I wouldn't expect at a NASCAR event?
As of now my only plan is to bring a rack of Miller Lite and a John Deere trucker hat.

I happened to catch Ghostland Observatory is playing there in a few weeks, NYC the night before (a Thursday), and nothing this side of NYC. I made a comment about wanting to go to Philly to see them, but not seriously. I wouldn't have expected my fiancee to be ok with going ~5 hours to Philly for a show. My fiancee however, she said would go since I been working so much this spring/summer. So gonna make a little weekend trip out of it. I think she wants to check out an aquarium in Camden, but we haven't looked too much into things. July was wicked busy.
Philly bashing always amuses me. It's typically low hanging fruit for the ignorant who have spent little to no time in the city. It is one of the best beer, food, and music cities in the US (pretty much the three pillars of life).
There are several craft breweries (including elite breweries like Tired Hands), and many new distilleries popping up. The dining scene has exploded, plus there are an abundance of sandwiches, and sandwiches are fucking delicious. The music scene is diverse and vibrant; the city has hubs in Fishtown / Kensington producing a plethora of indie & punk bands.
The sports fans are passionate..yeah they might give visiting fans a hard time, but I can't tell you the last time I saw a fight. It's nothing like it used to be.
One thing I always hear people mention after they move here is that they're surprised how nice everyone is. Of course you will get some cold people, its a northeastern city. For the most part though people are friendly. The city is filled with people who love music, art, food, and beer just like the majority of this board. As others have mentioned Philly is also so rich in history, with great museums as well.
It does bum me out when people trash this city, because it has so much to offer. Feel free to shoot me a message anytime you're visiting. I'd be happy to provide some rec's, or meet up for a beer / show.
Lastly, the backward state comment is pretty ridiculous. Philly and the surrounding 5 counties are liberal; the rest of the state really has no affect on Philadelphia and the experience one would have visiting.
Philly definitely has redeeming qualities, first and foremost being the beer scene.
My beef with the city is its lack of options in terms of volume. For example, unless you book a restaurant for Valentine's Day over a month in advance, you're eating at either a dogshit restaurant or you're getting ripped off. If you want to go to brunch at any legit place, you need to wait an hour to be seated. And ultimately, it's very easy to hit all the great spots and be done with it. Pretty much any place that someone mentions about philly, I bet I've been there. And I've only lived in Philly for 3 years.

I've heard good things about the Aquarium. Just make sure to leave enough time to get back to Philly before the sun goes down. Camden is one of the most dangerous towns/cities in the country. But the location where the Aquarium is is not bad, and it's very easily accessible via public transport from Philly. It'll be the first stop in Jersey.

We're staying in Cherry Hill, not Philly. Most of the hotels over there were like 150-200 a night, if not higher.
I am also going to go to the Prophets of Rage show at the amphitheater in Camden. Scale of 1-10, how much should I be worried?

It's fine. They're both on the waterfront which is kind of a redevelopment zone. It's fine to walk there and back from the train station during the day. I've walked in that neighborhood at night plenty of times because it's right by my law school, but if you're feeling uncomfortable just take an uber home after the show. Then again, there will probably be a good chunk of people walking to the train after the show so it's not like you'll be wandering around Camden alone at night.
Snowman, this is a great reason to rock some bitchin' cargo shorts.
I have a Sony xperia compact z3 its 4.6" which is perfect and it's waterproof. Im not about those bigger than your head phone. Get a smaller phone and just say no to cargo shorts.
I know some places in NY that would make Dave Maynar feel right at home.
Wolff's Biergarten?
Hahahaha they just opened one in Troy a few months ago. No joke, my friends and I were the oldest people there by at least a decade a couple weeks ago. It was horrible.
I was thinking some of the more backwoods mountain and hill towns. Where confederate flags stream from pickup trucks and everyone loves baby jesus.
I was born and raised in Michigan... Upper Michigan... like go across the bridge most people don't cross... or better yet, just go north of Wisconsin. They even have Canadian accents where I'm from.
I have been in South Carolina for 11 years now... I love the south! No one could pay me enough to move back.
I went with my parents to a race there, back in 1999.
Even in the corners, if you're pretty high up you can see most of the track from your seat. Straightaways would be more preferable though.
My buddy used to have season tickets at Dover and he said the best view was up a bit along the start/finish line. I would imagine those tickets would cost a bit more.

What track are you going to? I enjoy motorsports, and there is a guy from my hometown who runs a NASCAR survivor type league...has over 3K in entries.
As said above, the higher the better. Also, the closer to the start/finish-line the better. I would also recommend to rent a scanner and two headsets (you can usually use multiple pairs of headsets on one scanner, but double check). Not only will it protect your ears, it is also more enjoyable if you can listen to the broadcast. They have booths everywhere at the track, cost around $25 best I remember.

Quiet you. You're gonna challenge people's preconceptions that ignorant rednecks only exist in the South.
i would hope that everyone here knows that I am joking.
At least about the part where you would be comfortable. Those people make me really uncomfortable and ashamed. Seriously. They're only one town over from where I grew up.

Sweet, just realized Grimes and Jagwar Ma are doing a show in Salt Lake City in a month, and tickets are only $5. Some concert in the park thing the city puts on. It's almost a 5 hour drive from where I am, but think I'm going to try and make it. Never seen either before, and I'm dying to see some kind of show soon.

Bring plenty of beer.
Dover
Dover is usually one of the more action-packed tracks on the circuit. The casino is right behind the speedway...I'm sure it will be packed throughout the weekend.
Not sure if you ever been before, but you're allowed to bring alcohol in...just has to be in cans or plastic. Be sure to have the cooler ready.

Is it red butte gardens, that's a real nice place to see a show

Looks like it's at Pioneer Park. They actually put together a nice lineup together this summer, especially for $5 a show.
Couldn't find the YAY! thread, but I sold my car today and I'm very happy about that. It's the first step in a lot of big changes I want to make in my life. Now to just find a new car, get a new job, and move to Philly. Woot!
