Albany is full of stupid college kids that ruin everything good and holier than thou politicians with their little posses. I live 15 minutes away and avoid going there at all costs.
I went to U-Albany for grad school (they have a great atmospheric science program). Other than the moronic undergrads and corrupt politicians, one of Albany's distinguishing features is how unfriendly and unwelcoming it is. I think the juxtaposition of people originally from downstate and people originally from upstate creates a lot of tension, and no one seems to be especially happy living there. Plus the drivers absolutely suck. They blatantly run red lights (as in crossing the intersection two seconds after the light turns red) on a regular basis. Other than the people, it's not a terrible place to live, but my friend from grad school and I often refer to Albany as the most incredibly mediocre/average city in the U.S.
When did you graduate? My boyfriend's brother went there for something similar.
Albany sucks. It has the potential to not suck, but it just keeps on sucking. It really is so boring and mediocre.

I like most NYers I've met from upstate... but the politics of upstate NY is also treacherous and nasty. But thank the lord you don't live in Long Island anymore
Yeah, living in Ithaca can be a bit frustrating come election season. Our congressional district consists of almost every county in the uber-conservative Southern Tier...and Tompkins County. And FYI, Long Island natives say "on" Long Island.

I'm really surprised that Sheldon Silver and that other guy who's name I can't remember are getting their spots blown up. Now if only they would bring the rest of the state government down with them.

I graduated in 2012. And yes, Albany totally has the potential to be so much more than it is. Sadly, the best thing Albany has going for it is that it's within reasonable driving distance of so many other more interesting places (New York City, Boston, the Adirondacks, Montreal, etc.)
Living in the Northeast (specifically, New York) your entire life makes people from any other part of the country seem friendly. We are without a doubt the most rude, selfish, unfriendly, and impatient region of the U.S.

I feel you on that. Especially because something as clearly necessary as raising the minimum wage in NYC was blocked by the state legislature. Because you know, the rent isn't too damn high and the price of living in this city isn't steadily increasing... Oh might it be because so many of the business owners, realtors, etc. buy these politicians off with.. "friendship".
booooo. my absolutely favorite mexican restaurant was raided today for being part of the drug cartel. meth and heroine and cocaine and no more beans and cheese for me.
I found an AMAZINGLY cool apartment for me and CPK. We're going to look at it tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed for us, the rental market has been SOOOOOO competitive during our search.

pretty cool post celebrating 15 years of d'angelo's "voodoo." solange, beyonce, janelle monae and a bunch of others share how the album affected them 15 years ago and throughout the years.

I feel your pain.
my favorite place in minneapolis just got emptied and gutted the other week:
the former-white-castle-turned-accordian-store-that-still-sells-jewelry-too!-that's-most-definitely-a-drug-front. RIP castle accordians. (images left full size to see full detail)
Alright so guys, I just wanted to say that I took a trip to a really nice record store and it was the most enjoyable torture ever. I didn't want to spend unnecessary money cause I can't really afford to at the moment BUTTTT they had so many good albums that I seriously "needed"... I kept it conservative though and only bought two. So I got Spiritualized's "Ladies + Gentleman We Are Floating in Space" and I got the Luaka Bop "Who is William Onyeabor?" album. Two of my favorite albums that I did not expect to find in a record shop so close to home. Anyway, I just wanted come express my excitement/brag as I listen to william onyeabor on vinyl while laying in bed in my room (something that I never thought would happen.)
Thinking about the past a lot tonight, which is rare for myself.
Crazy how last summer I spent a whole month in Austrillia with 25 or so people from my school, and now I don't hear from any on them. Time really does fly.
That would confuse the shit out of me. I do appreciate the culture shock between regions. I remember a friend in college whose mind was blown the first time a waitress called them "honey". They were so confused.
I hate it. it's a big reason why I don't really enjoy living here.
like, at concerts I used to always try and strike up conversation with people next to me in the crowd - talking about the band, the beer they were drinking, other people in the crowd, etc. I always get body language/facial reactions from people as if it's like "why the fuck are you talking to me...? I don't know you...." and they will reluctantly give brief one-word responses, and then turn their backs/shoulders away. even if I would just smile or cheer while looking at someone, they'll react similarly. I've stopped trying to be social at shows around here. oddly, the only few people I've met & become friends with at shows have all struck up conversation because of my roo wristbands.
I was actually having this conversation with one my pals from oak ridge just the other day the friendliness of people in south dakota is very comparable to that of the south. minnesota is "nice" - aka I really miss the friendliness.
edit: actually, I just remembered at roo 2013 - I saw someone wearing a first ave shirt while in the high five line. I yelled "hell yeah dude! I'm from minneapolis!! I love first ave!!" and reached out to give him a high five.. he gave me the same reluctant reaction and gave the most half-assed high five I've ever received. I was so annoyed.
this really hurts. idk where you're finding these people. must be all the hipsters you hang with
