Anyone here have experience driving for Uber/Lyft? Thoughts?
I've driven for Lyft here and there for about a year now. I've considered signing up for Uber too and doing both but they do a more thorough inspection and I haven't bothered scheduling an appointment.
It's mostly fairly enjoyable. People are fairly nice most of the time. At least during the semester rides are fairly easy to come by on campus at any time of the day or night, but rides for students are often very short under 5$ rides. Around town there is a bigger gap between rides but the average distance and therefore pay is higher. I generally average about 10$ /hour not including gas and mileage on my car which is part of the reason I have been doing it less lately. Also being a super introvert after being at school or work the last thing I want to do is pick up random strangers. I know I could do better during the busier times of Thur-Sat 10pm-3am but I am an old man who likes to be in bed before midnight if i can help it and I generally don't love the super drunk riders.
It's a good way to make a little extra cash, but don't expect to get rich off it. Lyft is the easier of the two to get signed up for so start with them and see how you like it and you can sign up for Uber later if you do. Lyft drivers get paid a little more per ride than Uber, but generally there are more rides available on Uber. In Tucson it's fairly 50/50 but other places it's more drastic.
Any specific questions?
That actually about covers everything I was looking for. I'm thinking about doing it since I don't see myself lasting very long at my new second job (I routine have to stay an hour or more past when I'm scheduled, and I need to sleep), so I'd like to do something that would offer more flexibility as far as scheduling goes. Averaging around $10/hr isn't bad. Would you say that's before or after taxes? Actually how do the taxes on the income get taken care of? My area is pretty suburban but I'm right next to a college campus so that should definitely help on bar nights.
Exact opposite here. Uber, so easy to sign up. Never even talked to a person. Lyft you had to have your car inspected etc.
You can make a pretty penny if you do bar closings. Plus uber will do price guarantees during certain hours.
Do you guys know what kind of stuff they care about as far as your driving record is concerned? I've had no moving violations, but in the past four or five years I know I've been hit with expired registration/expired insurance/expired license type stuff. And I was in an accident in 2013 but it wasn't my fault. I don't know if those things will count against me (it was enough to keep me from being a Domino's delivery guy).

There was a mass stabbing at the mall in my city tonight. Luckily the attacker is the only one reported dead right now, but there's several critically injured right now, and it's hard not to think about how much worse it could've been. Scary stuff.

That's before taxes. They don't take any taxes since you are a contracted worker not an employee. I get a decent refund on my taxes every year so it doesn't really effect me, but if you pay taxes you would want to keep track of how much extra you'll owe from it in April.
I believe the background check red flags vary by region, but here it was no more than one accident or 2 moving violations in last 3 years i think.

I met this girl whose pretty great last week so I finally messaged her on Facebook today. For some reason, I thought it'd be a good idea to send her "hello my dude" as the first message. This is truly one of my big life regrets.

i've spent the weekend at the hospital/babysitting my niece while my sister had her baby. i came home this morning and my spare room is getting invaded with bees! i pulled up the blinds and they're on the window, between the screen and on the outside trying to get in.

A bee invasion does not sound like a fun thing to come home to.
Bees freak me out. I've never actually been stung by one, so I think the fear of the unknown probably makes them seem worse to me than they actually are, but my brother is allergic to them, so I hope to just not ever find out how bad a bee sting really is.

I am deathly allergic and that is grounds for me moving out immediately. Good luck with your issue, hopefully they rectify it quickly.

Of course you have bees coming into your house, you're their queen!
We blew it guys. Today was National Talk Like a Pirate Day and I haven't read one argh.
To be honest I'm kind of sick of this "Every day is a 'something' day". If every day is special then NO DAY IS SPECIAL!
Then I withdraw my invitation to you for my National Punch Day/National IT Professionals Day party tomorrow. You'll miss out on all the Tropical Punch and computer hacking.
