Regarding backing in to a parking spot; mayonaise explained to me once that it's standard practice for folks in the insurance business. If I'm recalling it correctly she said when you pull into a parking lot your mind is in a more alert state driving wise and you back into a parking spot because when you leave you will be less alert to driving conditions and more likely to back into someone.
this would be fine if people actually were good at backing in. trust me, I see it every day, they are not good at it. yet they continue to do it.
Quite fucking true! I've seen way more a$$hole parking jobs done by folks who backed in.

Fans of the Pogues help me out.
I'm getting my dad the CD that has "Fairytale of New York" on it for Xmas because apparently he's been watching that and a few other songs from the lead singer on Youtube lately (another is "dirty old town"). He loves Irish music like the Wolfe Tones and I don't think he has any actual pogues CDs so what else is "must have"? Any suggestions would help
Word. I think our man Scrog here breaks it down to the simplest reason: backing in delays work for a couple extra seconds so you can be out of there that much quicker when your day is done.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is a MAN thing. My husband takes great pains to "back" into a parking spot. All the while I'm saying will you quacking park already? Is it a natural survival instinct for a quick retreat or what? Because it's annoying as hell.
chiming in to say if at all possible, I will back in. I park at the end of our office lot most days and I back into the space. it's really because I don't want to have to focus on checking behind me when it's time to go, like Scrog said. I also tend to back in or at least pull through an adjoining space so I am facing out everywhere else. but I am weird about where I sit at restaurants and stuff too (back to the wall, near an exit, facing out).

I work at a car dealership and everyone I mean everyone backs in to spots for some reason. Could directly relate to the insurance thing as well as no1 wanting to be the oddball in the lot.

Totally ignorant on the Pogues
My personal favorites:
Rum Sodomy & the Lash:Dirty Old Town is a favorite of mine too. If I Should Fall from Grace with God:THE classic Pouges album, imo. Red Roses for Me: The debut.

Ooooo look at me. I live in an area with a well developed mass transit system. I'm so special.
When's the last time you lived somewhere with a yard?
Technically, my building has a 12'x12' patch of weeds and crab grass out front. At Fordham the entire campus was a yard. And for the first 18.5 years of my life I had 2 acres of pillowy blue grass to frollic in.

I wish I lived somewhere I didn't need to own a car. Although I'm sure the cost of living in NYC would end up amounting to more than I pay a year in car insurance, gas and repairs.

I've been saying this repeatedly over the past 2 weeks! I wish I didn't need my car...(public transportation in Omaha, NE is HORRIBLE and there is not much that is in close proximity that would make not owning a car possible)

Think about the environment though! And your own personal fitness.

I could definitely get around a town like Austin using their public transportation and a bicycle. The rent and property there isn't much higher than where I'm at in the boondocks now either. I'd probably have to keep my vehicle for trips to the lake and hiking excursions.

NYC is the best EVARRRR
Your private Jesuit university may have had fancy grass, but my sh*tty public university taught me how to spell frolic.

Thanks so much. This helps!
I largely agree with GL. Fall from Grace is probably considered their best but my favorite has always been Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. But my favorites from that one are Pair of Brown Eyes and The Old Main Drag.

I'm typing on my work Droid phone and since I never do that I've been spelling with the accuracy of a Mark Sanchez pass. Chill.
